genre stubs
[edit]Over the past few months I solicited a lot of feedback from the video game wikiproject, and there was a lot of support for various merges of genre articles. At wikipedia, I think a lot of people are tempted to create a huge page for every term or variation they think of. But we usually end up with a bunch of stubs. I can't remember where I pulled the information from, but the turn-based tactics article has improved just by merging otherwise good information from other badly categorized articles. Space trading games
[edit]If you're expanding the "space trade and combat simulator" section of the space combat simulator article to build a case for a split, I just wanted to let you know that I think that's a good idea. There's a tricky discussion going on at Talk:List of space flight simulator games. Part of the problem is that some of these games are space flight simulators (like Elite), and some just aren't (like Space Rangers or TradeWars). I'm curious as to your thoughts. I know that the research out there uses a lot of different names to describe this genre. But for the sake of clarity and avoiding confusion, I think a split to "space trading game" would avoid the most mis-categorization problems. There's a decent amount of research to support that as the name of the genre, even if there are more popular names. And even though we'd choose the name of the article for clarity's sake, we could still document the alternative names in its own section (similar to Iran naming dispute). Randomran (talk) 02:06, 20 June 2008 (UTC)
- I think it would be OK to rename it to "Space combat and trading game", but the "combat" has to stay. That said, "simulation" has been used pretty extensively to describe these games, as I've demonstrated in the Talk page, even for games like Space Rangers (haven't checked up on Trade Wars, it's so old, though I agree it's an unlikely case). SharkD (talk) 03:25, 20 June 2008 (UTC)
- I definitely acknowledge the research out there, and the many names out there. This choice of name would be to err on the side of clarity, so people understand that it can be a top-down or even text-based game. I'm okay with "space trading and combat game", even if I prefer conciseness. (I mean, when people go to the the page, they'll quickly understand that combat, trade, and exploration are all important parts of the genre. But the real point is to pull this category apart in a way that's clear and accurate.) Randomran (talk) 03:30, 20 June 2008 (UTC)
- I don't however, like the split of the list of simulations. I think that it's more important to reflect the space trading and combat genre and these games as being part of it, not focusing too narrowly on "simulation". SharkD (talk) 03:41, 20 June 2008 (UTC)
- That's a whole other discussion. I'm sincerely not sure what to do about that. But I think the space trade and combat game article should reflect those differences: that some types lift more features from flight simulator games, while others don't emphasize the flight simulation aspect at all. Randomran (talk) 03:58, 20 June 2008 (UTC)
- I've changed my mind. Renaming it to "Space trading game" or something like it would be OK IMO. SharkD (talk) 21:24, 20 June 2008 (UTC)
- Yeah. It's not that the other name is non-notable or original research. Just that "space trading game" would lead to less confusion and miscategorization, I think. (I'll try to be better about edit summaries too. Mind you, I get sloppy when I do a lot of edits in a row when I'm working on one particular article.) Randomran (talk) 22:12, 21 June 2008 (UTC)
- Yeah, after quite a bit of consideration, "space trading simulator" may be less common, but it works "smoother" for our categorization scheme. SharkD (talk) 01:52, 22 June 2008 (UTC)

Sorry if I bit your head off at this professional gamer's AfD, but the language question is shaping to be a speciality of mine and it needs to be dealt with promptly when it arises.
If you agree with my reasoning, would you be willing to gather other wikipedians to search for Korean sources? You're more familiar with our coverage (and presumably our behind-the-scenes structures) regarding gaming, and more reliable than I currently am. --Kizor 15:06, 16 July 2008 (UTC)
- No problem. The issue was successfully raised in an AfD once before, so I assumed it was policy. As for finding sources, I'm a bit busy at the moment, and haven't taken a particular personal interest in the article in question. SharkD (talk) 07:00, 17 July 2008 (UTC)
- Incidentally, Wikipedia:VG/DATE#Release_dates makes a similar argument, but with respect to the inclusion of release dates in infoboxes. I would be interested to learn what your take is on this quideline. SharkD (talk) 00:59, 18 July 2008 (UTC)

Civility
[edit]For the record, you're both being extremely passive aggressive. As an impartial observer, I find this behavior common on Wikipedia - bloated egos and frustrated territorialism thinly veiled by policy citations. You both hate each other - this is clear. You both want to see each other go down in front of your peers - otherwise you wouldn'tve gone to the dispute board. However, since you are slightly less passive, and slightly more aggressive, by Wikipedia standards, you lose. That's just the way it goes - the more passive aggressive you are on wikipedia, the more arguements you win. Trust me - I used to be a member. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 131.191.80.124 (talk) 14:57, 1 August 2008 (UTC)

Category:Video game typing aid templates has been superseded
[edit]Hello, this is a message from an automated bot. A tag has been placed on Category:Video game typing aid templates, by another Wikipedia user, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. The tag claims that it should be speedily deleted because Category:Video game typing aid templates has been superseded by a similar category (typos in name, expanding abbreviations, fixing capitalisation, renaming to comply with the "by country" format and conversions from singular to plural or vice versa). (CSD C2).
To contest the tagging and request that administrators wait before possibly deleting Category:Video game typing aid templates, please affix the template {{hangon}} to the page, and put a note on its talk page. If the article has already been deleted, see the advice and instructions at WP:WMD. Feel free to contact the bot operator if you have any questions about this or any problems with this bot, bearing in mind that this bot is only informing you of the nomination for speedy deletion; it does not perform any nominations or deletions itself. "Xbox" abbreviation
[edit]Please keep in mind that "XB" is a more widely used abbreviation than "XBOX". Technically speaking, "XBOX" is not an abbreviation at all, but a somewhat confusing and misleading capitalization. Feel free to contact me if you have any concerns. Just64helpin (talk) 01:09, 8 September 2008 (UTC)
Unicode notes
[edit]I disabled the editprotected requests for the edit notes for the video game chronologies. Because interwiki links are written in the language of the other wiki, every article on an important topic is likely to contain Unicode characters in numerous foreign languages. Because few people check mediawiki pages, I recommend starting a discussion on WP:VPR if you disagree with my reasoning. If consensus does form to add the notes then I'll be glad to do it. — Carl (CBM · talk) 22:40, 8 September 2008 (UTC)

Date formats after autoformatting
[edit]With the recent deprecation of date autoformatting, "raw" dates are becoming increasingly visible on Wikipedia. Strong views are being expressed, and even some edit-warring here and there. A poll has been initiated to gauge community support to help us develop wording in the Manual of Style that reflects a workable consensus. As you have recently commented on date formats, your input would be helpful in getting this right. Four options have been put forward, summarised as:
- Use whatever format matches the variety of English used in the article
- For English-speaking countries, use the format used in the country, for non-English-speaking countries, use the format chosen by the first editor that added a date to the article
- Use International format, except for U.S.-related articles
- Use the format used in the country
The poll may be found here, as a table where you may indicate your level of support for each option above. --Pete (talk) 18:12, 10 September 2008 (UTC)

Freedom Force Characters
[edit]It seems fairly standard to have a list of characters for video games. Could I get an explanation for why this game can't have the list of characters in either the main article itself or in a separate article? All I've gotten so far is people calling it "fancruft", which seems to be another word for "non-notable" which is one of those things tossed around on Wikipedia when people want to delete things without explanation. Please understand that I would like to work with you on this. Personally, I think the separate list makes more sense since the two games shared a large number of the characters. Or should I trim it down to the characters in the "core team"? Please advise. -Fuzzy (talk) 14:25, 15 September 2008 (UTC)
Date format poll confirmation
[edit]You recently contributed to a poll on date formats.[1] The option you supported won the poll but is now an option in a final poll to test support against the current version.[2] The poll gives full instructions, but briefly the choices are:
- C = Option C, the winner of the initial poll and run-off. (US articles have US format dates, international format otherwise)
- R = Retain existing wording. (National format for English-speaking countries, no guidance otherwise).
If you wish to participate or review the progress of this poll, you may follow this link. --Pete (talk) 02:05, 17 September 2008 (UTC)
DavidClock
[edit]Hi SharkD.
Some time ago we discussed the UTC clock gadget at the Village Pump. I have now gotten around to update my version of the clock with the improvements suggested by Ilmari Karonen and others. It is now fully configurable to meet all needs. Due to it being fully configurable it is now more code, but it is more efficient than any of the other versions since it is only the very small inner "updateTime" function that runs on each tick.
I have not installed my version of the clock as the gadget yet, since I think some users should test it first.
You can copy my version of the clock from User:Davidgothberg/monobook.js and put it into your own monobook.js.
Note: There are several code snippets on my monobook.js page, be sure to copy the right part. Oh, and don't forget to configure the DavidClock to tick and show as you like. As you can see I have it set to only tick once every 5 minutes since I have a very slow computer and don't really need higher time resolution.

I don't want to have to bring this to AFD or PROD (like I did with Sacred Blaze) if I don't have to because I missed something in my searching for reliable sources. I have searched under both the Japanese and English names, and I'm not seeing anything; I think there are some false positives in the searches, as well. If you have the time, and if you can possibly find something in which I could not, that would be helpful. Thank you, MuZemike 00:06, 13 January 2009 (UTC)

Request to move article List of space flight simulator games incomplete
[edit]You recently filed a request at Wikipedia:Requested moves to move the page List of space flight simulator games to a different title - however your request is either incomplete or has been contested for being controversial, and has been moved to the incomplete and contested proposals section. Requests that remain incomplete will be removed after five days.
Please make sure you have completed all three of the following:
- Added {{move|NewName}} at the top of the talk page of the page you want moved, replacing "NewName" with the new name for the article. This creates the required template for you there.
- Added a place for discussion at the bottom of the talk page of the page you want to be moved. This can easily be accomplished by adding {{subst:RMtalk|NewName|reason for move}} to the bottom of the page, which will automatically create a discussion section there.
- Added {{subst:RMlink|PageName|NewName|reason for move}} to the top of today's section here.
If you need any further guidance, please leave a message at Wikipedia talk:Requested moves or contact me on my talk page. Aervanath (talk) 05:39, 30 January 2009 (UTC)

Here's to you

Second that appreciation! Oicumayberight (talk) 23:53, 17 March 2009 (UTC)
- Wow! I've never been commended for preventing the evisceration of something before. Wikipedia is such a lovely place... Thanks! SharkD (talk) 02:27, 18 March 2009 (UTC)
templates
[edit]Just wanted to thank you again for your fantastic work building and maintaining those templates.
I also wanted to make a request, just to make the layout a little more economical. If you compare Template:VG Action to other series templates, such as Template:Ancient Egyptian religion or Template:Judaism, you'll see they make better use of horizontal space. A lot of templates use a smaller font size, too. The Judaism template is an extreme example, but it fits around 100 articles in the same space that the action game template fits 25 articles. (Ancient Egypt is around 50 in that space.) Do you think you could incorporate some of the layout strategies from these templates, to economize on space? Randomran (talk) 22:56, 17 March 2009 (UTC)
- That's why the templates are collapsible. Also, it's easier to follow along with nesting when the template is in list format. However, changing it shouldn't be too hard. SharkD (talk) 02:26, 18 March 2009 (UTC)
- Thanks for looking into it. I really like how tight those other templates are, and that's usually par for the course. Randomran (talk) 14:42, 18 March 2009 (UTC)
Proposal to change Template:VG-Action
[edit]Thanks for participating in the discussion about this template. I have now made a proposal, looking to establish consensus to change it, and I'd be grateful if you could express your approval or disapproval, in WT:WikiProject_Video_games#Proposal.
Thanks, -- Chzz ► 23:55, 26 March 2009 (UTC)
Template:VG Reviews fix
[edit]I recently proposed a change to Template:VG Reviews at WT:VG. And have tried to implement it on a trial basis, however, as we're all a bunch of amateurs, it's gone all wrong. I know you did quite a lot of work on the template, so if you could take a look at the issues detailed at Template_talk:VG_Reviews#Switch_aggregate_reviews_and_singular_reviews and sort it out, it'd be much appreciated. - hahnchen 21:23, 28 March 2009 (UTC)
Thanks for your useful work on this. I'm wondering whether it's possible to reduce the size of the picture of Handel, in line with the size of other similar navboxes? (I'm not sure how to do this, otherwise I'd attempt it myself.) Best. --Kleinzach 01:20, 2 April 2009 (UTC)
- I'm not sure. Check {{sidebar}} to see if there is such an option. If there isn't, then it should be added. SharkD (talk) 09:27, 4 April 2009 (UTC)
Tables
[edit]Hey SharkD, I tried recreating the table from List of tallest buildings in New York City on Cornish Wikipedia at Rol a dhrehevyansow an uhella yn Cita Ebron Nowyth. Why is it not showing up the same? How can I rectify this? Thanks! --Caponer (talk) 23:43, 6 April 2009 (UTC)
Actually, #time is not limited by the 1970 cutoff
[edit]Regarding your comment at Template_talk:JULIANDAY#Separate_parameters, actually this limitation can be overcome, though it requires some gymnastics. See {{start-date}}
if you want to use #time in the way you queried about. -J JMesserly (talk) 07:19, 9 April 2009 (UTC)
Happy Easter!
[edit]On behalf of the Kindness campaign, I just wanted to wish my fellow Wikipedians a Happy Easter! Sincerely, --A NobodyMy talk 07:28, 12 April 2009 (UTC)
Cheers mate!
[edit]I would like to ask you if you would like to look and give your opinion on the new Articles for deletion proposal for FreeOrion. I wrote a new version article from scratch and I would like to ask you if you could comment on it FreeOrion and Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/FreeOrion (3rd nomination). Thank you nice! Peer-LAN (talk) 17:05, 22 April 2009 (UTC)
Hi, I reverted your edit on Template:Dynamic list. I am all for discussion but this change to a widely used template should be discussed first before implemented. Besides, if this change is going to stick I will remove it from some articles I put it on, like the featured list List of HIV-positive people. From a small message to explain that it basically never can be complete it now changed into a large in your face box. Garion96 (talk) 06:00, 27 April 2009 (UTC)
- I agree that it is perhaps too large. I did add the option for a smaller version, e.g: — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 11:49, 27 April 2009 (UTC)
- That looks OK in my opinion. SharkD (talk) 00:14, 7 May 2009 (UTC)
Reverted Changes
[edit]I see that you reverted my changes to one of the Chronology of Console RPG pages. I was attempting to move it closer to a page internally consistent with the stated definition of Console RPG. I added a discussion, justifying my removal of the Tactical RPG's from the list, to which no reply has been given. Please contribute to the discussion so others can understand why this list does not conform to the established definition of Console RPG. Thanks! Dawynn (talk) 09:59, 6 May 2009 (UTC)
Video games with isometric graphics
[edit]Hi, tonight I made the Video games with isometric graphics a separate article by splitting it from the Isometric projection article. Based on you contributions I thought you would like to know.
I also proposed to merge the Dimetric projection and Trimetric projection in the Axonometric projection article, see here. I would value you opinion about this proposal. -- Marcel Douwe Dekker (talk) 23:06, 2 June 2009 (UTC)
Regarding your recent edits, the reason I had previously changed them to pages rather than articles is because they also include things such as categories and templates, not just articles, and therefore I think pages is more accurate. MrKIA11 (talk) 12:39, 12 June 2009 (UTC)
- I didn't realize that, thanks. SharkD (talk) 23:10, 12 June 2009 (UTC)
