Lighthouses in Macau and Hong Kong

[edit]

14.0.180.151 (talk) 11:41, 4 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for leaving me a message. I appreciate that I've become a bit of a subject expert on content disputes around Hong Kong-related topics so I welcome the notification and will respond at those discussions. However, it will be helpful if you could create an account so we can have a coherent discussion. Deryck C. 14:08, 4 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Have you got any idea about where this is heading? No where? 219.76.24.209 (talk) 08:41, 6 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

The article isn't protected at the moment so please feel free to edit the text yourself. Deryck C. 15:56, 4 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Why don't we wait till the article is recovered? It's difficult to manage materials spreading over three different locations. 219.76.18.76 (talk) 11:41, 5 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
There is no article to "recover". Nothing is being deleted. If the article gets split, the text will move with it, and appropriate attribution will be given on both talk pages. Also please create an account so we can have a coherent conversation. Deryck C. 12:25, 5 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Are the Lei Yue Mun one or the one in Ting Kau considered lighthouses? 219.76.24.209 (talk) 08:47, 6 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I have nothing to add beyond what I have already written on Talk:List of lighthouses in China in early 2021. I do not see merit in further correspondence on this topic. Deryck C. 14:23, 6 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Can I borrow you as a translator?

[edit]

Google Translate is absolutely butchering the translation [12]. Can you sum up what is going on here and what exactly the bot was momentarily blocked for on zhwiki?—CYBERPOWER (Chat) 17:40, 8 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Cyberpower678: Translating is easy, but a straight translation probably won't help anybody, because the sequence of events looks complicated. I'll start a bilingual discussion on zh:User talk:Cyberpower678, try to compile a timeline of events, and notify the editors involved. Deryck C. 18:00, 8 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

IP block exemption

[edit]

Greetings -

I opened an OTRS ticket several weeks ago requesting an IP block exemption for my account, but I still have not received a response. I want an IPBE primarily for privacy reasons, as I recently subscribed to a VPN provider. I want to be able to edit without having to turn off the VPN every time I edit, and I would be logged into my account anyway so it’s not like it would be a problem.

I’m a trusted editor here with over 17,000 edits, and I’ve been here for over 7 years. I believe I am a suitable candidate for the exemption.

I noticed that you logged another editor’s successful IPBE request for the same reason (privacy), so I decided to contact you. I realize you are not a checkuser so I was hoping you could get in contact with a checkuser who could help me out with this request.

Thanks, LJF2019 talk 17:04, 31 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@LJF2019: Thanks for the message. I sometimes give IPBE to other editors, but usually only to those for whom I have established an off-wiki chain of accountability (e.g. participants of in-person Wikimedia meetups or university editathons). Sorry about that! Deryck C. 13:21, 2 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

"Miscellaneous" discussion

[edit]

Wikipedia:Templates for discussion/Log/2021 May 24 has got out of hand. There are issues about a template, also disambiguation and redirects though. I think it would be better closed and sent to Wikipedia:Miscellany for deletion because it was messy from the start (I put it at WP:CR for that reason). Charles Matthews (talk) 19:19, 24 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Charles Matthews: I think the scope of the discussion is fine for TfD as it is. It concerns what to do with two templates that serve the same purpose. I've joined the discussion there. Deryck C. 21:45, 24 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Administrators will no longer be autopatrolled

[edit]

A recently closed Request for Comment (RFC) reached consensus to remove Autopatrolled from the administrator user group. You may, similarly as with Edit Filter Manager, choose to self-assign this permission to yourself. This will be implemented the week of December 13th, but if you wish to self-assign you may do so now. To find out when the change has gone live or if you have any questions please visit the Administrator's Noticeboard. 20:05, 7 December 2021 (UTC)

How we will see unregistered users

[edit]

Hi!

You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.

When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.

Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help.

If you have not seen it before, you can read more on Meta. If you want to make sure you don’t miss technical changes on the Wikimedia wikis, you can subscribe to the weekly technical newsletter.

We have two suggested ways this identity could work. We would appreciate your feedback on which way you think would work best for you and your wiki, now and in the future. You can let us know on the talk page. You can write in your language. The suggestions were posted in October and we will decide after 17 January.

Thank you. /Johan (WMF)

Re:‎Fat Kwong Street RFPP

[edit]

I couldn't respond to the RFPP ping before it got archived- but, basically what's happening is there's an LTA (WP:LTA/HKGW) who's persistently edit warring over articles mostly relating to Hong Kong. We think it might be the same guy behind the edit warring on the lighthouses in Hong Kong article back in early 2021, but all attempts at going through content dispute resolution methods have consistently failed. Fat Kwong Street is (weirdly enough) an article that's often targeted by the LTA, which is the main reason why an RFPP was made. All of their edits can be reverted per WP:Evade, since they've been blocked on numerous IP ranges and on their account. Padgriffin Griffin's Nest 02:33, 12 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Fat Kwong Street

[edit]

I got no idea why my edits to this article and to Template:HK routes have kept being reverted. None of my edits have contained anything "obscure" in nature nor are they disruptive or vandalist in any sense. There was no apparent reason given and from what I observed Citobun, Padgriffin, HurricaneEdgar and Ymblanter, among a few others who are not as involved, are simply labelling all non-registered editors from Hong Kong as "geography warriors", harrass them, persecute them and undo all their edits. So far they've only admitted they've mislabelled one of them. But the exercise has continued. Please advise what can be done against these people's disruptions. Thanks. 219.76.24.194 (talk) 08:03, 16 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

IP blocked for distributive editing. Padgriffin Griffin's Nest 11:44, 16 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Could you help Deryck? 219.76.24.194 (talk) 11:51, 19 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
This is incredibly petty but I've had a look. @Citobun: I'm not convinced by either version... East Kowloon Corridor lands to the north of Fat Kwong Street flyover, so I would say Fat Kwong Street intersects with Chatham Road North (Route 5) but not EKC. I've edited to that effect. Deryck C. 09:31, 4 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you indeed. Would you mind also taking a deeper look into (a) the extensive IP blocking, and (b) the actual western end of this road? They are exploiting a somewhat loophole in the LTA mechanism to practically label as vandals all Hong Kong IP editors who they don't like. And for Fat Kwong in particular they don't even accept they have been wrong regarding the western end of the street despite the sources. 219.76.24.220 (talk) 09:09, 5 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I'm not sure by "western end" whether you mean that of Fat Kwong Street or of East Kowloon Corridor. Either way, I don't feel strongly about it, and you are currently not blocked and free to edit these articles yourself.
Regarding IP blocks, I have no further advice to add other than what I have already given to other IP editors from Hong Kong affected by collateral damage (which may or may not be you): create an account under a pseudonym. It both protects your privacy (your IPs are no longer visible to anyone except WMF-appointed CheckUsers) and exempts one from these wide IP range blocks. Deryck C. 09:44, 5 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I'm not sure by "western end" whether ... That of Fat Kwong Street. The western end of Fat Kwong Street at its junction with Pui Ching Road and Sheung Shing Street. Citobun insisted the western end to be at the junction with Princess Margaret Road, which is actually part of (or, to the west of the eastern end of) Pui Ching Road. 219.76.24.209 (talk) 08:05, 6 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Okay. Google Streetview seems to agree with you on this one. Deryck C. 08:24, 6 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Wouldn't the Land Registry be a more relevant source? 219.76.24.209 (talk) 08:44, 6 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
If you can provide a citation to Land Registry in the article, that will be great too. Deryck C. 14:20, 6 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Already added, and coincidentally that's something which they insisted to delete with no reason given. 219.76.24.194 (talk) 11:02, 8 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

New administrator activity requirement

[edit]

The administrator policy has been updated with new activity requirements following a successful Request for Comment.

Beginning January 1, 2023, administrators who meet one or both of the following criteria may be desysopped for inactivity if they have:

  1. Made neither edits nor administrative actions for at least a 12-month period OR
  2. Made fewer than 100 edits over a 60-month period

Administrators at risk for being desysopped under these criteria will continue to be notified ahead of time. Thank you for your continued work.

Writing an Article

[edit]

Hi Snowolf,

My name is Stephen Wesley Vann better known as Wezley or Steve Victory. I am a music artist, producer, songwriter, and streamer. I have worked with artists like Chris Brown, Do or Die, Twista, Bone Thugs, Cypress Hill and many others. I have also been featured on The Oprah Winfrey Show.

I have been wanting to start a Wiki page for myself but I don't want to have a conflict of interest or sound biased. I believe I could write it without sounding biased, but I would much rather have someone else do it and help with the process. I'm also not too familiar with writing Wiki pages. I just released a new compilation album and I have a new album being released in a couple of months.

I came across your username in an article that said you're willing to help people. If there's any way that you could help me put this together and write this I would be extremely grateful. We can chat via email, skype, or however you prefer.

If you can't help me then no hard feelings. I completely understand. However, if you can, you would be helping me a great deal. I would be very appreciative.

I look forward to your response. Thank you Deryck Chan.

Best Regards,

Wezley

Chinesische Buchreihen

[edit]

Hi Deryck,
I'm addressing you because of your knowledge of both German and Standard Chinese. There's two articles in the German Wikipedia that leave me a bit puzzled: de:Buchreihe von historischen chinesischen Werken zur chinesischen Ess- und Trinkkultur sowie Diätetik and de:Buchreihe von Meisterwerken der alten chinesischen Kochkunst. They have no links to other languages, no cited sources, and the articles seem so generic to me that I'm not sure they describe something concrete. Would you be able and willing to give those articles a brief look and assess them? Background info: Both were written by a permabanned user with a history of creating problematic articles.
Thanks and kind regards, Grueslayer 16:12, 27 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Grueslayer. I've done a web search on the two books' Chinese names. They both look like real historical books, but the only web hits I can find are bookshop listings for modern translations of these books. The sources cited by the de.wp articles are mostly offline so I can't verify them. The articles don't look like hoaxes, but the topics seem very obscure and there are basically no secondary sources. I would support deleting them due to low notability. Deryck C. 19:46, 25 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for your assessment, Deryck. Notability is rated differently in the German Wikipedia, e.g. the fact that modern translations exist is probably reason enough to keep the articles, but since there's no secondary sources it may be necessary to boil them down. I'll make up my mind about that. Thanks again, and kind regards, Grueslayer 20:06, 25 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Invitation to participate in a research

[edit]

Hello,

The Wikimedia Foundation is conducting a survey of Wikipedians to better understand what draws administrators to contribute to Wikipedia, and what affects administrator retention. We will use this research to improve experiences for Wikipedians, and address common problems and needs. We have identified you as a good candidate for this research, and would greatly appreciate your participation in this anonymous survey.

You do not have to be an Administrator to participate.

The survey should take around 10-15 minutes to complete. You may read more about the study on its Meta page and view its privacy statement .

Please find our contact on the project Meta page if you have any questions or concerns.

Kind Regards,
