Call, Write, Throw a rock - Get my ATTENTION
[edit]For the article on Shephard Smith, I referenced the article on gawker.com. There have actually been several of them. None of what I wrote was controversial. I don't understand why we can't make that information available. I don't see why you should have control over what aspects of Shephard Smith's personal life the public should and should not have access to. Thanks,Brendan unsigned comment added by 64.252.3.49 (talk)
- The article that you cited is not a reliable source, and the accusations by the people who are 'outing' him have a grudge against him, and/or a political ax to grind. The source is a tabloid, very bad journalism, and not reliable. Please read Wikipedia's rules on biographies on living people, which explains in detail about this subject. The notable paragraph from that page is thus: Biographies of living persons ("BLP"s) must be written conservatively and with regard for the subject's privacy. Wikipedia is an encyclopedia, not a tabloid: it is not Wikipedia's job to be sensationalist, or to be the primary vehicle for the spread of titillating claims about people's lives: the possibility of harm to living subjects must always be considered when exercising editorial judgment. Take care. Dinkytown talk 14:57, 26 October 2013 (UTC)
- Their bias was noted in my update to the wiki and questionable choice in outing the man was referenced. Just because they have an ax to grind doesn't mean that the information they provided isn't accurate. It isn't even argued or a point of contention. I can site multiple other sites verifying what I wrote. The article itself should probably never have been written, because it is wrong to out people like that, but the fact that that happened IS newsworthy. It is one of the few times that Shepard Smith has been the news himself. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 64.252.3.49 (talk) 20:23, 26 October 2013 (UTC)
- Because the source does have an ax to grind is exactly the reason that it should not be used because there is a good chance that the source may not be accurate. A pissed off waitress and an unnamed source is not a reliable source. The page is about Shepard Smith, not about the ethics of tabloids. Please read WP:NOTRELIABLE and WP:UNDUE about what is and is not a reliable source. Not all sources can be used - especially from tabloids. You can try a WP:RFC for a consensus, but I think your time will be better spent describing another issue, rather than addressing his orientation - which because of WP:BLP, can not be cited until he comes out himself. Alright thanks for your time today. Your describing things out in detail helped me understand the specifics of the rules and where I went wrong. I only started adding content a week ago. There a lot of rules you wouldn't expect just using it, for the creators. I suppose there is a reason it maintains a high standard of quality. I have been having to edit or erase numerous entries. But I guess i'm learning and it should get simpler over time. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 64.252.3.49 (talk) 05:07, 27 October 2013 (UTC)
- There is nothing wrong with being a novice. I've been doing Wikipedia for something like seven years and I still learning things - as we all are. I would also suggest getting a User name, since the vast majority of vandals are IP's, you don't want to be confused with them. You will be taken far more seriously when you are in contact with people. Some people do use IP addresses for political reasons (i.e. safety), but getting a handle goes a long way. If you have any questions, I can help. Be bold... Take care...
Amplifier vandalism?
[edit]Hi Dinkytown, can you explain how this edit can possibly be an act of vandalism, or did you perhaps accidentally hit the wrong Huggle button? DVdm (talk) 12:44, 14 January 2011 (UTC)
- Some IP inserted the worg "guitar" in place of "amplified". I saw it as a vandal. Would there be a better button? Dinkytown talk 12:49, 14 January 2011 (UTC)

Pachelbel portrait
[edit]Hello,
why haven't you read the notice on top of Johann Pachelbel? The 1748 portrait almost certainly does not depict the composer. Not one document mentions Pachelbel the composer having an additional name ("Christoph"), and besides, a posthumous portrait made four decades after the person's death is a thing quite unheard of. Finally, there are no reliable sources indicating the portrait's authenticity; I only saw one reference to that painting in an old genealogical record, and the reference clearly stated that this member of the family is not the composer, but some unknown person. --Jashiin (talk) 21:19, 25 February 2011 (UTC)

Fly agaric and reindeer
[edit]Hello, Why is pointing out the connection to the amanita muscaria vandalism? --->http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MkCS9ePWuLU This is obviously where the tales come from. Rudolph's red nose was from sniffing out the mushrooms, no? Stories of elves are associated with many hallucinogenic drugs. The Irish are also known to have a history of mushroom use. Their folk tales are rich with elf and fairy characters. Know what 'manna' is? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cMjt9qE4kx0 'A number of ethnomycologists such as R. Gordon Wasson, John Marco Allegro, and Terence McKenna, have suggested that most characteristics of manna are similar to that of Psilocybe cubensis mushrooms, notorious breeding grounds for insects, which decompose rapidly. These peculiar fungi naturally produce a number of molecules that resemble human neurochemicals, and first appear as small fibres (mycelia) that resemble hoarfrost. This speculation (also paralleled in Philip K. Dick's posthumously published The Transmigration of Timothy Archer) is supported in a wider cultural context when compared with the praise of Haoma in the Rigveda, Mexican praise of teonanácatl, the peyote sacrament of the Native American Church, and the Holy Ayahuasca used in the ritual of the União do Vegetal and Santo Daime.[17] ' —Preceding unsigned comment added by 99.225.134.3 (talk) 02:49, 2 April 2011 (UTC)

File permission problem with File:Cy Thao portrait.jpg
[edit]Thanks for uploading File:Cy Thao portrait.jpg. I noticed that while you provided a valid copyright licensing tag, there is no proof that the creator of the file agreed to license it under the given license.
If you created this media entirely yourself but have previously published it elsewhere (especially online), please either
- make a note permitting reuse under the CC-BY-SA or another acceptable free license (see this list) at the site of the original publication; or
- Send an email from an address associated with the original publication to permissions-enwikimedia.org, stating your ownership of the material and your intention to publish it under a free license. You can find a sample permission letter here. If you take this step, add {{OTRS pending}} to the file description page to prevent premature deletion.
If you did not create it entirely yourself, please ask the person who created the file to take one of the two steps listed above, or if the owner of the file has already given their permission to you via email, please forward that email to permissions-enwikimedia.org.
If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Non-free content, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:File copyright tags#Fair use, and add a rationale justifying the file's use on the article or articles where it is included. See Wikipedia:File copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.
If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have provided evidence that their copyright owners have agreed to license their works under the tags you supplied, too. You can find a list of files you have created in your upload log. Files lacking evidence of permission may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. VernoWhitney (talk) 13:02, 12 April 2011 (UTC)
You had asked for speedy deletion, you said on the talk page, but albums aren't eligible. I saw that you had prodded it as a BLP, which is erroneous. I have reverted it to its original state--a redirect. Thank you. Drmies (talk) 23:33, 19 April 2011 (UTC)
The link I added on the Clipperton Island is not vandalism. The captain who discovers the island, Michel Dubocage, was also the captain of La Dauphine which is presented on the website www.epaves.corsaires.culture.fr This site is written by the archaeologists how worked on the shipwreck of La Dauphine and published by the french ministry of culture. Orphaned non-free image File:Karl Frenzel.gif
[edit]Thanks for uploading File:Karl Frenzel.gif. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).
Note that any non-free images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described in the criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. Skier Dude2 (talk) 04:49, 26 May 2011 (UTC)
- Hi Skier - the photo you mentioned is a photograph of public figure from German Nazi era who has been the subject of war crimes trials and found guilty. Under German copyright laws any photos during this period are not subject to the copyright laws and are for free use. Please respond. Dinkytown talk 18:00, 27 May 2011 (UTC)
- If that's the case, then you will need to change the copyright template on the page, as it stands, the current license is a fair-use one and subject to the non-free image rules. Skier Dude (talk) 23:33, 27 May 2011 (UTC)

Sámi ancestry and articles related to the Sámi people
[edit]Bures Dinkytown,
I see that you are missing a <references />
tag on your user page.
I'm a Wikipedia user of Sámi ancestry that lives in Sweden. Have you heard of BÁIKI The North American Sami Journal before? The Facebook ("Facebook IS Mass Surveillance" ~Richard Stallman) group is called Saami Baiki. I'm also a Sami-American. I'm a Sámi politician in the political party Min Geaidnu. I'm a Muslim believer and I pray 5 times daily. If I have to explain, it's a long story. My Mother's grandfather worked with scientists who were Jewish. He was sponsored by the Rothschild family to make expeditions to Mesopotamia, Java, Borneo, Sarawak (Malaysia). There are many intelligent scientists among the Jews. But my family are not of Jewish descent. I describe myself as of "Sámi Celto-Germanic" origin. I think a might marry quite soon (an interpretation) since I have promised to get togheter with a wonderful and very fine Lady. Which I at first thought was Muslim, but latter her tender heart was shown to be Christian. With hard work I plan to make this happen insha'Allah (G-d willing). BTW: I don't want to offend by saying insha'Allah. I'm telling you the truth: nowadays many are offended.
Maybe you may want to help contributing to articles related to the Sámi people? Since you uploaded File:Karl Frenzel.gif, a public figure from Nazi Germany: I have worked on sv:6. SS-Gebirgs-Division Nord (in Swedish) on Swedish Wikipedia. I want to translate some parts of the article to English.
There is a film called Suddenly Sámi about when: in 1944 the Nazis troops torched northern Norway, when Sámi people were evacuated southwards together with 70.000 other people. Reference: Suddenly Sámi

See edit notes: he doesn't meet notability requirements . He is notable for only one event, so his relevant information belongs in the election article and his name should redirect to that. The Faith Tones
[edit]Speedy deletion nomination of The Faith Tones
[edit]If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.
You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.
A tag has been placed on The Faith Tones requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about a person, organization (band, club, company, etc.), web content or organised event, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Please read more about what is generally accepted as notable.
If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Click here to contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, you can place a request here.

It's ok now, Jason Calavito set things straight.
Still, it would be nice to know the real and non bogus history of native trade in copper in the Great Lakes Area, Minnesota, Michigan, Ontario and Transportation Routes by boat and land and any Scandinavian-native American interactions, if any, concerning trade in surface copper. (Keweenaw, Houghton and Ontonagon counties).
As for your project CHATTER and Erich Traub deletes on Walter Reed National Military Medical Center has me perplexed and troubled. You see, both these pages link to Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, via a secondary link from Naval Medical Research Institute. Your deletes eliminate a reciprocal link back to these pages giving the impression of sanitization of American History. Further deleting your footprints on the view history pages for Walter Reed National Military Medical Center does not help the impression that you are trying to conceal or hide something from the general Wiki Public. Quite troubling, if you ask me. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 76.65.122.152 (talk) 20:36, 10 October 2013 (UTC)

I temporarily nowikid this out, because of the side effects the template causes (adding the cat users looking for help and pinging IRC helpers), assuming that Arthur explained the block background sufficiently, because I really didn't want to revert you on your own userpage. Is that OK with you? Martijn Hoekstra (talk) 09:04, 26 October 2013 (UTC)
- Hi Martijn - If the template causes a problem elsewhere, I could understand the deletion issue, however I am very confused about 99.181.131.235's block. I saw no history of vandalism, and actually saw somewhat positive work on his part, albeit amateurish. Is there something going on here that I don't know about? Because I'm struggeling to understand this doesn't look good from my POV - thanks... Dinkytown talk 09:14, 26 October 2013 (UTC)
- I don't know the ins and outs, but I do trust Arthur on the long term abuse issue. Feel free to ask him further questions about it if you have doubts about what happened. WP:DENY is an effictive way to deal with long term abuse, but should never go at the expense of transparency. Martijn Hoekstra (talk) 13:49, 26 October 2013 (UTC)
- Thanks Martijn - Per your suggestion, I'm going to let this go. Mostly because I don't know about how to locate IP addresses, identify sock puppets, etc. It seams that Arthur can. The IP has avenues to file a complaint, if he feel's he's been wounded. IMO, IP's are suspect on any given day anyway... Take care... Dinkytown talk 15:18, 26 October 2013 (UTC)

I've reverted your "article" under this name for several reasons:
- the actor you've listed is not notable, having played primarily bit parts in most of the films he was in
- the lede paragraph was a copyright violation, directly copied from IMDB. Copyvio is very strictly not allowed on Wikipedia
- Most of the links you made went to the wrong articles
- Your only source was IMDB, which is generally not considered to be a reliable source
In short, this was not a good attempt at making an article. Now, if George Bartenieff the actor is the same George Bartenieff who copfounded Theater for the New City in New York City, there's a basis for an article in his total career (when there's not one in his film career). I have no idea if this is same guy or not, but please keep this in mind. Best, BMK: Grouchy Realist (talk) 06:12, 18 January 2014 (UTC)
- They're the same person, so I've started to flesh out the article. BMK: Grouchy Realist (talk) 08:37, 18 January 2014 (UTC)
- Thank you BMK: Grouchy Realist for reconsidering the deletion of the George Bartenieff article. So far, it is looking great. I'll add what I can offer - take care... Dinkytown talk 14:48, 18 January 2014 (UTC)

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. The article Stephanie Drake has been proposed for deletion because it appears to have no references. Under Wikipedia policy, this biography of a living person will be deleted unless it has at least one reference to a reliable source that directly supports material in the article.
If you created the article, please don't be offended. Instead, consider improving the article. For help on inserting references, see Referencing for beginners, or ask at the help desk. Once you have provided at least one reliable source, you may remove the {{prod blp}} tag. Please do not remove the tag unless the article is sourced. If you cannot provide such a source within seven days, the article may be deleted, but you can request that it be undeleted when you are ready to add one. CAPTAIN RAJU (✉) 17:50, 14 April 2016 (UTC)

[edit]Your addition to Union Special has been removed, as it appears to have added copyrighted material to Wikipedia without permission from the copyright holder. If you are the copyright holder, please read Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials for more information on uploading your material to Wikipedia. For legal reasons, Wikipedia cannot accept copyrighted material, including text or images from print publications or from other websites, without an appropriate and verifiable license. Speedy deletion nomination of Union Special
[edit]If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.
You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.
A tag has been placed on Union Special requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about an organization or company, but it does not credibly indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Please read more about what is generally accepted as notable.
If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator. — Diannaa (talk) 20:10, 20 April 2016 (UTC)
Proposed deletion of Union Special
[edit]The article Union Special has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:
- Possibly non-notable. Changed from Speedy to Prod to give creator time to come up with refs.
While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.
You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}}
notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.
Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}}
will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. HappyValleyEditor (talk) 00:08, 21 April 2016 (UTC)

Corn
[edit]You seem to be changing references of "corn" to "wheat". This should be referenced. While "corn" is synonymous to maize in American English, this is not the case in British English. Per Oxford Living Dictionaries, "corn" means: "The chief cereal crop of a district, especially (in England) wheat or (in Scotland) oats." It is a synonym for "grain", "cereal", and "cereal crop".
I had to learn such differences the hard way in my school years, because any "Americanism" in my English tests would immediately result in a downgrading. Dimadick (talk) 14:09, 4 February 2019 (UTC)
- Dimadick - thank you for your response. You are right that "..."corn" is synonymous to maize in American English". However, in American English, if the word "corn" was used in the context of a pre-Columbian History thesis, there would be red ink all over that page from the instructor. In the States, "corn" is very specific and the author would loose a lot of credibility if he/she used that terminology. I would suggest using the word "wheat" or "grain" in lieu of "corn", as "corn" would conflict with basic understanding of pre-Columbian History. Thanks. Dinkytown talk 17:56, 7 February 2019 (UTC)
- Another thing I forgot to mention, corn is linked to the word "maize", which would add further confusion to the terminology. Take care Dinkytown talk 18:11, 7 February 2019 (UTC)
