- Good work - I didn't serve for 30 years - quite a bit less but I'm a veteran of several major disasters, both as a JO and subsequently in broadcasting including the 1993 WTC bomb, the Paddington rail crash and Buncefield. Before that the Marchioness and Clapham train crah whilst in the job (to name a few!). Why don't you touch base with User:daysleeper47 in the US, he's i/c the fire project on Wiki. Meantime - why don't you publish your existing history article, cross link it to history sec in Fire service in the UK - then other eds can help build your stub up into a full article. Good luck. History of fire service legislation
[edit]Hi there. Excellent work on this, it's extremely informative and thorough - brings back many memories of trying to implement some of the legislation. I would like to add some changes, but they are all minor, ad mostly relate to Wiki style - but I'd rather do this when the article is online, and don't want to list everything here. Some bigger points:
- The RR (fire safety order) is not an Act - it's a statutory instrument - or "order in council", or secondary legislation. Simply an SI is used to alter existing legislation
- Although your article is about fire safety legislation - I think you should include a section on the Fire and Rescue Services Act 2004 (I've done a stub on this). Why? Someone with a limited knowledge might wonder why it's not included - ie because it's not focused purely on fire safety but Section 6 (and 28 I think) deal with "promoting fire safety" and "empowering inspectors". It is now, as you know, the primary legislation for FRS in England and Wales. *Problem: If you mention and lik to the FRSA - you need to include the Scottish and NI equivalents. Confusingly the Fire Scotland Act (2005) covers in Scotland what the FRSA and RRO cover in England in one act - your article is about "UK history"... so you'll have to work that in. :) NI is covered by: The Fire and Rescue Services (Northern Ireland) Order 2006 S.I. No. 1254 (N.I.9) Ditto. But the good news is that you can lift the info and refs from my article Fire service in the United Kingdom.
- Then... you should Wikilink all acts of parliament, check they work (or don't)[1] and list all statutory instruments - although these don't tend to have stubs on Wikipedia. I've thought about starting one on the RRO 2005 as it was such a massive change to the law.
- Finally you need a killer reference in your opening paragraph to give weight to your opening statement. Surprisng how often this gets missed. I recently added one to the British Transport Police article - just by citing the BTP's "about us" on the homepage of its web. A pretty obvious thing that often gets missed.
- So.. I think you should publish your article then we can help tweak. It's great work and I know history articles are very fiddly. Let me know when it's live. Regards Escaper7 07:35, 22 February 2007 (UTC)

In search of an answer from one of your articles
[edit]Hi there, hope you're well. Another user made lots of edits to an article I started Fire service in the United Kingdom. S/he claimed that the Fire Service Act 1947 was still primary legislation in Scotland. I turned to this article for some help, and although I'm sure the FSA DID apply to Scotland it doesn't say so in your article - so perhaps we should edit. The editor also claimed that the FSA never pplied to Northern Ireland - and on that one I'm stumped? any thoughts? Regards. Escaper2007

As long as it is cited as a reference (preferably in-line) it should work out. Moses Gate
[edit]No problem. I knew the old wives tale was wrong. As well as the book citation, there's the other which shows it was spelt "Moss Gate" on Greenwood's Map of 1818, although then it looks like "Mofs Gate". An old "s" back then looked like a "f". The "gate" bit is found in Deansgate, Bradshaw and Churchgate in Bolton. Anyway, nice to know that others are interested in the Bolton area. Regards Cwb61 (talk) 13:57, 22 January 2008 (UTC)

I am proposing that you consider moving a lot of the material from Geology of Alderley Edge Cheshire basin section to Cheshire Plain
I think that would solve many problems, as the article on the Cheshire plain itself is very small and most of the info about the Cheshire plain is in the geology of Alderley edge article lol

I have just done some major reworking of Geology of Alderley Edge, which included (without knowing about your suggestion here) just what you say, and moving much of that Cheshire Basin material to a more appropriate article... actually to Cheshire Basin. I don't claim that my reworking is perfect, but I hope it is a significant improvement; the article is over a third shorter than it had been earlier this morning, but (I hope) without loss of information. I've been expanding this article and wondered if you knew of a good book to use as a source for a few lines about the geology of the area, considering your work on the lancashire coal mines list? A diagram of the strata would be brilliant, I know of one at Bolton library but I think it's in copyright. I just need to give the reader a sense that at one time, Worsley = Coal. The text in the article is more or less a straight copy of the original document, so I wondered if you thought perhaps putting 'mine owner' in brackets would be more appropriate? Photos
[edit]Thanks very much for the photo of the VRB-25 at Highland Light. I've just posted an article on the lens system and having a good closeup photo was very helpful. Two requests:
- Do you have any other lighthouse photos? We are sorely in need of them for most of the lights in New England. I could give you a list....
- This is a little like looking a gift horse in the mouth, but please when you upload photos, do your best to add meaningful categories. I lucked into the VRB-25 photo -- if it had been in Category:Lighthouses or Category:Lighthouses of Massachusetts, it would have been easier to find. I know that the upload page makes adding categories painful -- box is too small, but it makes it much more likely that they'll be used.
BTW, did you know that Jeremy D'Entremont used a very similar VRB-25 photo (Same lighthouse, not the same view) at http://www.lighthouse.cc/highland/index.html ?

Sweet and Sour
[edit]I agree that the wording in the western sweet and sour pork is poor. I was trying to merge four pages into one and the sweet an sour pork section is still as it was on the original page. It is factually incorrect. Sweet and sour pork is generally served in western Chinese restaurants with the tag "Cantonese" but it isn't in fact popular in that part of China. Rather the western dish is a novel concoction created by immigrants to the west pulling on concepts from several parts of China. Moses Gate Country Park

For 25 years I was the warden in charge of the Country Park and during that time I spent many many hours researching the local history of the area in order to provide accurate and informative interpretation in the visitor centre at Rock Hall and also mobile exhibitions and many lectures to schools and other interested user groups and local societies.
Some time ago I altered part of the page regarding the origin of Moses Gate from that which had been used using an except from Gordon Readyhoughs book of origin of local place names. I notice that subsequently you have edited the information I provided back to your original giving the reason as using "factual evidence rather than local legend" However the truth is that the name Moses Gate does originate from the name of the toll gate keeper who was first appointed in the late 1700's
When the toll gate was abolished on 1st November 1876 (Clegg - Annals of Bolton) according to the local press ( Bolton Chronicle, Evening News and Farnworth Journal) there were celebrations with processions and brass bands and in one of these there was a reference to the toll keeper who had given his name to the local area. Indeed if you look at the 1841 OS map there is very little around the area apart from the station and just south of it is a small building which I have wondered if it was the toll as it fits in with the location of the toll in later census returns. While Gordons book does provide suggestions for many locations in the area, many are only assumptions based on rough translations with no proven accuracy in every situation
There are some other suggestions I will add for the page that are relevant as I am concerned that now the visitor centre has shut much of the information I dug out over the year will be lost
I was also for a while responsible for Clifton Country Park, and I did notice one error at the end of it relating to Wet Earth Exploration Group excavating the turbine etc. this is not true. That work was done by the Greater Manchester Archaeology Group, funded by Salford City Council. The exploration group was concerned with clearing the many underground tunnels accessed from the river bank. I was fortunate along with Alan Davis from what was then the Salford Mining Museum and a friend of mine Martin Critchley to be the first to explore the main tunnel prior to Alan forming the Exploration Group
