File:Kratingdaeng Piala Indonesia.png

@JJMC89: Hi. I want to ask about File:Kratingdaeng Piala Indonesia.png. I don't really quite understand about the violation marking in that file. At first, I uploaded to specify the logo of Piala Indonesia page. But user Askarjason98 moved it to 2018–19 Piala Indonesia page as he specified that No sponsor version (for main page). To see the sponsor, you can see also on the season pages. So what can I do to remove the mark? I already changed the Use in article Summary to 2018–19 Piala Indonesia. What else? Thanks. Wira rhea (talk) 01:49, 1 December 2018 (UTC)

@Wira rhea: You've done all that needs doing. I've removed the deletion tag. — JJMC89 02:50, 1 December 2018 (UTC)
@JJMC89: Thank you very much. Regards. Wira rhea (talk) 03:19, 1 December 2018 (UTC)

File:Dawn Newspaper logo.png

The bot has been removing this image from the Dawn Media Group article for some reason. I can't see a reason as to why it is doing so, the file has been uploaded with correct usage details and is also used in Dawn (newspaper) without any issues. Can you please see what the problem might be. Thanks. Gotitbro (talk) 06:47, 3 December 2018 (UTC)

(talk page watcher) Hi Gotitbro. The file does have a non-free use rationale for Dawn (newspaper), but a separate specific non-free use rationale is need for each use per WP:NFCC#10c and the file does not have a non-free use rationale for Dawn Media Group. That's why it was removed (see WP:NFCCE). If you feel that the non-free use of the file in the media group is justified, then provide the missing non-free use rationale for its use (make sure the rationale is specific to the particular use) and then re-add the file to the article. Providing a rationale is no guarantee that others will agree that the use complies with relevant policy, but it will at least give them something to assess.
Now, having posted all of that, I think there's a very strong possibilty that this file is too simple to be eligible for copyright protection. It's certainly too simple to be eligible in the US per c:COM:TOO#United States, but I'm not sure about Pakistan. So, the file might actually be OK to relicense as some for of public domain, which means its use will no longer be subject to Wikipedia's non-free content use policy. -- Marchjuly (talk) 07:02, 3 December 2018 (UTC)
@Marchjuly: Thanks for explaining it to me. You're right the image does seem to fall under PD as its only text and thus I have updated the license, hope it resolves this. Gotitbro (talk) 07:10, 3 December 2018 (UTC)
In order for you to properly use that license, the text logo would need to be PD in both the US (where the Wikipedia servers are located) and the country of origin. Pakistan use to be part of the British Empire, so it might continue to follow c:COM:TOO#United Kingdom to some degree and the UK's TOO is much lower than the US's. If you're sure that's not the case here, then the license is fine. If someone says it's not, then {{PD-ineligible-USonly|Pakistan}} would work for local use on Wikipedia. Finally, if your pretty sure it's 100% PD, there's no need for Wikipedia to host the file and it should also be tagged with {{Copy to Wikimedia Commons}}. -- Marchjuly (talk) 07:18, 3 December 2018 (UTC)
Thanks, Marchjuly. Gotitbro, please be mindful of what Marchjuly said about TOO. — JJMC89 03:53, 4 December 2018 (UTC)
@Marchjuly: Thanks for the heads up. You're right that Pakistan does have holdover laws from the Empire era but I'm not sure about copyright laws but this should pass even in the UK as PD and pretty sure it does even in PK. And thanks for tagging the file for Trademark. Gotitbro (talk) 04:07, 4 December 2018 (UTC)

Infobox settlement

Hello JJMC89! Thanks a lot for the 2017 clean-up on Polish locations that use Infobox settlement.[1]

In some cases it resulted in pages now having two coord-templates. Also, it seems the bot did not replace template-space redirects, like Xenobot did in 2010 [2]. The template has been renamed to lower case in 2009.

There are still 5000+ [3] that

  • use the redirect Infobox Settlement instead of the direct call
  • have the coordinates outside the infobox
  • have no pushpin map specified
  • if there are two coord-templates with same values, delete the one outside the infobox

For the reader most significant would be moving the coordinates into the infobox and add " pushpin_map = Poland ". While doing that, the redirect can be turned into a direct call of Infobox settlement, as Xenobot did in 2010.[4]

Could your go through the 5000+ and check if it could perform all three changes? Redirect replacement maybe should not be done standalone, because it may qualify as cosmetic.

All together there are ca. 7700 articles that use Template:Infobox Settlement instead of the direct call of Template:Infobox settlement. If the 5000+ Polish articles are fixed, then the 2009 renaming is much closer to be finished. 77.191.191.106 (talk) 19:28, 5 December 2018 (UTC)

Blanking other users' sandboxes

You seem to be blanking quite a few sandboxes of other users. Why? Even declined drafts in user sandboxes may still have useful information (e.g. suitable for extending another article), and new editors might not realize where their content went if you blank their sandbox. And I, for one, wouldn't be happy if some drive-by editor blanked my sandbox, either. Huon (talk) 14:21, 3 December 2018 (UTC)

@Huon: Its an alternative to G13'ing them once they inevitably remain unedited for 6 months, which makes it harder for the users to retrieve any content that they may want. I'm happy to keep G13'ing them instead. — JJMC89 16:05, 3 December 2018 (UTC)
Well, I just had one user in the IRC help channel asking where their draft went, and I remember seeing another being worked on a few weeks ago. I don't think the pages you blank are anywhere close to G13, are they? Huon (talk) 18:19, 3 December 2018 (UTC)
Based on that I considered reverting the lot from 1 December, but I looked through them again. Some were past 6 months or will be soon. (~10%) Others were not of any use (~80%): author already created or merged in mainspace (~10%), no content (~5%), copy/paste from existing page (~10%), nothing I found useful to merge into the existing article (~55%). That leaves a few: one copyvio, one I reverted, and some more likely abandoned (~5%). [%s are rough, and edits (G13) was checked last.] If there are any that you (or anyone else) want to revert go for it. I'm going stick to G13'ing. — JJMC89 03:50, 4 December 2018 (UTC) 02:45, 7 December 2018 (UTC)
I want to add into the blanking/redirecting discussion and express my concerns/irritation, because you did this to my Draft:Safety sign 2 days after I had gotten a rejection, which I was appealing/discussing with User:AngusWOOF who reviewed it. Per those discussions I'd launched a split discussion at the article you redirected to, with the required headers notifying of this at the top of the article and section impacted and discussion starter in the talk page. You redirected it 2 days after rejection and a week from my previous edit. It was confusing and infuriating and I almost had a go at User:AngusWOOF thinking they'd just ignored my concerns/objections. Further it took a little bit for me to decide if I was even allowed to revert the redirect.
I get what you are doing (blanking vs G13), but give it sometime before you do that, and explain it to the person in their talk page so they know why you did it, particularly because our own guidelines say you should be doing that.--The Navigators (talk)-May British Rail Rest in Peace. 10:36, 5 December 2018 (UTC)

Arabic calligraphy

Hello, You removed the image of Al-Jazeera Urdu on the Arabic Calligraphy page, and I was confused by this choice. The photo was found from the Wikipedia Commons so I know it should be fair use. Please let me know how to make sure the right photo ends up on the page. Gilbertjoan (talk) 21:21, 5 December 2018 (UTC)

The image is hosted on Wikipedia under a claim of non-free use, not on Wikimedia Commons. Each use of non-free media must meet all of the non-free content criteria, including having a rationale explaining how they are met. Use in Arabic calligraphy could easily be replaced by free media (criterion #1). — JJMC89 02:45, 7 December 2018 (UTC)

I have two doubts, one related to template and another related to category. Regarding template, in this template, for the attribute coach, how can I add an alternate name? I mean in the form of label. It is not to be done to that template. Related to category: Consider this category. In that category, how can I change the link for the help image link? To be more clear, I need that help link in a specific page to link to some other help page. Can that be done?Adithyak1997 (talk) 17:32, 3 December 2018 (UTC)

@Adithyak1997: The "Coach:" label comes from {{National field hockey squad}}. It doesn't support changing it to another phrase currently. Why do you want to change it? If you're wanting to change it in another wiki, then just edit the template that I linked. I'm not sure if the help link can be changed. If it can be, I haven't been able to figure out where. — JJMC89 03:25, 7 December 2018 (UTC)

JJMC89 bot disable pages

Hi JJMC89, first, there is nothing wrong with your bot. I am writing because as you may know, with the introduction of interface administrators, general sysops can no longer edit other user's .js and .css pages as a site security measure. Because of that, some of your interrupts for JJMC89 bot would not be accessible to all admins which would make it more likely the bot would be blocked if an issue came up. I did not have a chance to look over the public portion of your bot's code, but you may wish to consider migrating those task shutoffs, if technically possible and not too much trouble, to other pages (which could then be protected if needed). Thanks, Mifter (talk) 06:57, 8 December 2018 (UTC)

I've been meaning to take care of that since IAdmin rolled out. Thanks for the reminder, Mifter. — JJMC89 05:15, 11 December 2018 (UTC)

More rural localities of Russia

Hi! Wondering if you could do what you did for me here again, with Category:Rural localities in Amur Oblast? No rush, especially if it's a lot of work for you. ♠PMC(talk) 16:16, 9 December 2018 (UTC)

Done I wasn't sure what to do with the Blagoveshchensk ones, so I just left what was in the infobox. — JJMC89 05:18, 11 December 2018 (UTC)
Thank you!! I really appreciate your help with these :) Please let me know if I can return the favor somehow, anytime. ♠PMC(talk) 05:34, 11 December 2018 (UTC)

Bot text test

I updated the email text for inactive admins per your suggestion. I know it's a hassle, but would you be willing to fire up the bot in such a way as to generate some test emails, either to my account or to a test account of yours where you can forward them to me? If you don't think it's necessary, I'm OK with that, but after some years of writing software, I tend to be skeptical of any changes I make that I haven't tested, even just to character strings. Thanks, looks good. UninvitedCompany 03:57, 19 December 2018 (UTC)

Merry Merry

Happy Christmas!
Hello JJMC89,
Early in A Child's Christmas in Wales the young Dylan and his friend Jim Prothero witness smoke pouring from Jim's home. After the conflagration has been extinguished Dylan writes that

Nobody could have had a noisier Christmas Eve. And when the firemen turned off the hose and were standing in the wet, smoky room, Jim's Aunt, Miss. Prothero, came downstairs and peered in at them. Jim and I waited, very quietly, to hear what she would say to them. She said the right thing, always. She looked at the three tall firemen in their shining helmets, standing among the smoke and cinders and dissolving snowballs, and she said, "Would you like anything to read?"

My thanks to you for your efforts to keep the 'pedia readable in case the firemen chose one of our articles :-) Best wishes to you and yours and happy editing in 2019. MarnetteD|Talk 08:45, 18 December 2018 (UTC)
Thanks, MarnetteD! — JJMC89 04:36, 19 December 2018 (UTC)

FFU

Hey JJMC89. Thanks for helping out at FFU. Just a couple of notes. FFU is kindof a "I can't figure out the software" page, or "I don't know why my [usable under policy] image was deleted [because I uploaded it wrong]". Also the templates that have been made for that page can be deceptive, since the vast majority of them are rarely if ever used. So if something is, for example, a PD-text-logo, it's usually better to just go ahead and upload it to Commons, since if they could figure out how to upload a PD-text-logo to Commons, they would have already done it. Doing so is arguably easier than asking at FFU, although FFU is designed to be user friendly, while hundreds of possible templates on Commons aren't.

So usually the only requests I deny at FFU are images that are clearly not usable under the non-free content criteria. But so long as the issue is mainly "please click the right buttons in the upload wizard for me", then folks are still helping us build a better encyclopedia, since they're helping us identify images that are usable under policy that we aren't using. Your RfA

Best of luck in your RfA. Bit weird that you've chosen to start it on Christmas Day of all days though! Any reason for that? Merry Christmas and best wishes all the same. -=Troop=- (talk) 17:21, 25 December 2018 (UTC)

Thanks, Trooper1005. I'm running while I'm off work. I meant to start it yesterday but got busy with other things. Merry Christmas — JJMC89 17:33, 25 December 2018 (UTC)
Good reason - I came here to give the same luck and ask the same question. A tough way to spend even a bit of your holiday, but touch wood so far, so good Nosebagbear (talk) 18:30, 25 December 2018 (UTC)
I thought it was his Christmas gift to us...you know, sacrificial. 😆 Atsme✍🏻📧 21:36, 25 December 2018 (UTC)
