Re: Korean IPA

[edit]

I'm familiar with it, but not an expert. Need help with something? quant18 (talk) 05:11, 23 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Quant18, I was wondering if you think this is right: Jeon Hye-bin (Korean전혜빈; Korean pronunciation: [dʑʌnh(j)ebin]; born September 23, 1983). Jaewon [Talk] 12:25, 23 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Hey, sorry not to get back to you quicker, crazy couple of days. Only one change: Korean pronunciation: [tɕʌnh(j)ebin]. Basically, the "ㅈ" (e.g. in her surname) is unvoiced at the start of a word. Cheers, quant18 (talk) 14:00, 24 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Quant18, no problem. Wow, I was one character short of getting it right. Thanks. Jaewon [Talk] 14:21, 24 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Quant18, I found this template and it produces [d͡ʑeːoːnhjeːbiːn]. Different from what we have. Jaewon [Talk] 15:24, 27 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hmm:
  1. I think you have to pass it "eo" as a single parameter: {{IPAc-ko|j|eo|n|h|y|e|b|i|n}}.
  2. There's a rule in Template:C-ko (the backend for Template:IPAc-ko) to allow "j" to show up as /tɕ/ instead of /dʑ/ at the beginning of words, but I can't figure out how to use it. So I guess you also have to manually distinguish those two situations (and "g" = /g/ or /k/, "b" = /b/ or /p/) in the template: {{IPAc-ko|tɕ|eo|n|h|y|e|b|i|n}}
  3. However even after those two changes, the result is not entirely correct: the template assumes that all vowels are long (that's what the colon-like symbol is for). This is definitely incorrect. The default assumption (particularly in names) should be to write the vowels without any length marker, because many speakers no longer distinguish long vs. short vowels.
So unfortunately I think this template is still a work in progress, and for now it's better to write out the IPA manually using the table at Korean phonology. quant18 (talk) 02:04, 28 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Opps, I didn't notice that while I was typing. Yeah, I noticed that nobody else has worked on it and the creator hasn't been on for a while. Jaewon [Talk] 02:09, 28 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I am not familiar with AfC procedure. The article looks borderline notable, with my gut feeling being not notable, due to very few independent sources. Perhaps it could be improved with Korean ones, but for now it looks spammy. --Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here 07:51, 27 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I think the article is somewhat promotional as there is not that much coverage in independent sources, but there's probably borderline enough for me not to worry about it too much. Thanks for taking interest in AfC! --Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here 04:01, 28 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Merge. Or if you feel lazy, move to mainspace and tag with merge tags. (That's why I dislike all the AfC, draft, sandbox and such things... to much content is duplicated, or forgotten). --Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here 04:34, 2 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Rollbacker

[edit]

Hi Jay2kx. After reviewing your request for rollback, I have enabled rollback on your account. Keep in mind these things when going to use rollback:

  • Getting rollback is no more momentous than installing Twinkle.
  • Rollback should be used to revert clear cases of vandalism only, and not good faith edits.
  • Rollback should never be used to edit war.
  • If abused, rollback rights can be revoked.
  • Use common sense.

If you no longer want rollback, contact me and I'll remove it. Also, for some more information on how to use rollback, see Wikipedia:New admin school/Rollback (even though you're not an admin). I'm sure you'll do great with rollback, but feel free to leave me a message on my talk page if you run into troubles or have any questions about appropriate/inappropriate use of rollback. Thank you for helping to reduce vandalism. Happy editing! ☺ · Salvidrim! ·  00:26, 19 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Kpop article help

[edit]

Hello. I'm a fairly new editor to Wikipedia trying to de-fan some of the Kpop articles. I saw some of your comments from earlier this year on the Korea working group and thought maybe you could help me. I've taken a few actions myself, namely removing the lists of nicknames from various singers and variety personalities' infoboxes. But I want to nominate some articles for deletion, namely some of the out-of-control articles written about couples from 'We Got Married'. Some couples have articles dedicated just to them, which surely isn't appropriate (there are no articles for John & Yoko, for Lucy & Desi, both of whom are 1000x more notable than WGM couples). One couple even has articles for each season of the show, just for that couple. To me, that's like an article called "Songs by Mariah Carey with 'Love' in the Title." And there are navigation boxes at the bottom of the articles with links to the 'husband' and 'wife's Wikipedia pages, their management companies' pages (which have nothing to do with WGM), and anything else the creators thought they could squeeze in there. Surely none of this belongs on Wikipedia?!

However, I have no experience with making such nominations. I'm afraid people will argue they are notable because there are (as with everything in Korean entertainment) gazillions of articles in Korean media on those couples, which have all been faithfully translated by Allkpop and fansites into English & other languages. ((In fact, the whole "notability" issue seems difficult in the area of Korean entertainment by Wikipedia standards, because so much of the media coverage is for promotional purposes and as such is unrelated to notability. There are also, IMO, issues with the non-fact-checked nature of many articles in the Korean media when it comes to claims about Kpop-related revenues, concert attendance, etc - most media just reprint whatever the company tells them, and a lot of time it's not true. Of course, the Korean media won't say this and the foreign media don't care, so how to address this? But that's a deeper discussion for another time - though one I'd like to eventually have.)) I have read through deletion nomination documentation but I can't figure out what violations to cite and some of the other requirements (where to post stuff) is a bit murky/overwhelming also. Can you help with some guidance? Or point me to other sensible, experienced editors who could help? I tried the Teahouse but got zilch; things just move too fast there for anything in-depth.

Thank you so much. Shinyang-i (talk) 08:41, 13 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

(talk page stalker) If you wish to nominate something for deletion, you are looking for WP:AFD.  Revi 16:11, 13 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
That "Talk page stalker" made me laugh. Jaewon [Talk] 21:13, 13 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Shinyang-i, what articles are those nav boxes on? Jaewon [Talk] 21:13, 13 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the quick reply Jaewon & Revi. The worst infobox is on YongSeo, but even the We Got Married infobox is mainly an excuse to link to couples pages that shouldn't even exist in the first place, calling them "notable couples" (YongSeo, Khuntoria, and Taeun). The WGM infobox also has a section for "other couples" but only lists a few of them (with links to each individual's article). Like, I don't even understand what's going on there. I can't really see why 'We Got Married' needs an infobox at all, and I can't see how any of those couples pages (and the associated 'Khuntoria in season 2' and 'Khuntoria's background music' articles, etc.) are appropriate for Wikipedia. But I'm afraid someone will cry that it's all notable, because there have doubtless been a quadrillion articles in Korean media on all of those subjects. Can you help advise with the appropriate criteria to cite for AFD? Thank you so, so much! Shinyang-i (talk) 22:26, 13 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Shinyang-i, that's true. I feel like articles like YongSeo and others could be merged with the season that they belong to. But messing with it is like poking a hornets nest. Either way, I left a question on WGM's talk page to see if any of the main contributors will reply back to it and if nobody replies back before Thursday, we can propose a move. Jaewon [Talk] 04:09, 14 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you, Jaewon. This is exactly the kind of help I was hoping for, to observe the kind of procedures that are appropriate (like moving a page versus deleting, and seeing subsequent processes). This entire "hornets' nest" situation reminds of all the anime articles, and how a lot of that was allowed to get out of control because only/mostly anime fans were involved in any of the decisions. When only fans are calling the shots, things get judged differently than and of far greater importance related to the rest of Wikipedia. Thank you, again, for the guidance - it's very useful & educational! Shinyang-i (talk) 01:19, 15 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
It is like with K-pop articles too and it depends on the subject or people. I checked the talk page of WGM and one person replied. Hopefully, more people will reply soon. Jaewon [Talk] 02:14, 15 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Hi again. Is there any centralized place kpop article discussions occur (or should occur)? I found a discussion or two on the Korea working group but nothing that addresses a lot of the things that probably should be discussed about these articles for consistency's sake, and to avoid having essentially the same discussion a hundred times. I think many/most (?) of the kpop editors don't read the working group or even the article talk pages a lot, but that's their loss. Examples of possible discussions - which awards are appropriate to list, amount of detail appropriate on list articles (example, an un-responded-to discussion I tried to start here Talk:List_of_South_Korean_idol_groups_(2010s)), if a group has no independent English-langauge sources is it notable in English Wikipedia?, etc. Ideas? Thanks again for any guidance. ^^ Shinyang-i (talk) 20:34, 17 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Shinyang-i, that's the main problem on wiki is that a lot of kpop editors don't even use the talk pages. There was a discussion in May related to certain awards (Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Korea/Popular culture#Allkpop and Soompi Awards listed in award sections of musicians). And groups that haven't debuted yet shouldn't be listed at all even if they have a lot of references about them. I did see that the list (2010s) is lacking the amount of references that the previous years have. We did work on a list of reliable sources too. My method of trying to get other editor's attention is pinging the main editors of the article in the talk page of the article. Also, I'll propose a mass move/merge of the WGM pages when I get the chance tomorrow. Jaewon [Talk] 02:26, 18 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Quick question, Jaewon - has there ever been a consensus on those silly weekly music show "awards" that are given every single week on every single music show? Some of these awards lists make 2-year-old kpop groups look more important than The Beatles. I know it's had to have come up before. Eek! Shinyang-i (talk) 02:08, 19 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Shinyang-i, I'm sure there had to be a discussion at one point but haven't seen an archive of it. That's true, those shows don't seem to carry a lot of weight when somebody wins them. Especially if you know that a certain person or group is going to win anyways if it is a new song (sadly, even if it sounds awful). They are basically like MTV's TRL and BET's 106 & Park except with live (or pre-recorded) performances instead of music videos. If there were more editors communicating as a whole, it would solve the problem. Jaewon [Talk] 02:54, 19 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I think it's a discussion that needs to happen. Do you think the Korea working group page past discussions have been on is a good place to try to start something? Shinyang-i (talk) 02:57, 19 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Shinyang-i, that is a good idea. And if you can't find what you're looking for, then I might can help. I tried to put everything in these two: Wikipedia:WikiProject Korea/Reliable sources and Wikipedia:Wikiproject Korea/Article guidelines. Jaewon [Talk] 03:08, 19 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Importance of this kind of article?

[edit]

Someone made a ton of articles like this one: 1958 in North Korea. They're all obviously stubs, but how does something like this rank on the importance scale? I just have no experience with this type of article, but I'm happy to knock them all out quickly. Shinyang-i (talk) 07:41, 9 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hey, I'm back with a couple more questions. First, I don't see any admins listed on WP:Korea, but you seem to be on top of things overall. Who decides when to archive talk pages, for instance? The popular culture working group talk page has become a tad unwieldy, IMO. (lots of very long discussions that went nowhere. sigh.) Also, I was wondering if there was a way, even if just temporarily, to stick an additional tag on all these kpop articles so they'd be sorted into a single categorys (or a few). When I go to the popular culture-sorted category, I get overwhelmed. I just think it might be helpful to look and see "hey, we've got 4783947328947 song articles, maybe we should look at them all together to see why there are so freaking many of them" or something. Or look at relevant categories to see "why are there so many categories related to every conceivable aspect of Shinee? Is this good or bad? Could this be useful for other artists?" Know what I mean? Kpop does not deserve its own working group or anything, but if there was some way to group them all together automatically (not a manually-maintained list), at least until some of the excess gets weeded out, it'd be great. Do you know how that kind of thing works? Shinyang-i (talk) 12:32, 14 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

(talk page stalker) again WPKO has few admins (on category or on list: i.e. NativeForeigner or Visviva). For archive of pop group, I see there is a code to archive threads older than 3 months. — Revi 13:13, 14 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
@Shinyang-i and -revi: Sorry about the late reply, my computer is having problems and had to reinstall my OS. Not sure how long I'll be able to stay on until I find the real problem. I know there are some people in the North Korea working group who work on them but don't know who is active among them. Haha. Seems like I missed a lot. I'll figure something out and let you know the plan. And thanks Revi! Jaewon [Talk] 16:47, 19 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Oh it's no problem at all. I just saw them while assessing and thought I'd knock them out. Sorry to hear about your computer problems - hope the OS reinstall solves them! Shinyang-i (talk) 18:19, 19 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
@Shinyang-i: Yeah, I just did a reset on the assessment count. And I hope so, the worst is reinstalling programs and updates back on. Jaewon [Talk] 20:55, 19 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

WP Korea reliable sources page

Hello! I hope your computer repair work went well and is completed! I can't live without mine functioning on all cylinders. Anyway, would you mind commenting and taking action (if you see fit) on this discussion at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Korea/Reliable sources@Korea.com and Mwave forums? Based on my experiences with articles, I proposed a couple of alternations to the reliable sources list. There was some discussion and then it dried up. I don't think any of it's controversial. But I'm not sure who should make the page edits, so I came to you. I'm going to go summarize things there now. Thanks! Shinyang-i (talk) 04:44, 3 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Asian 10,000 Challenge invite

[edit]

Hi. The Wikipedia:WikiProject Asia/The 10,000 Challenge has recently started, based on the UK/Ireland Wikipedia:The 10,000 Challenge and Wikipedia:WikiProject Africa/The 10,000 Challenge. The idea is not to record every minor edit, but to create a momentum to motivate editors to produce good content improvements and creations and inspire people to work on more countries than they might otherwise work on. There's also the possibility of establishing smaller country or regional challenges for places like South East Asia, Japan/China or India etc, much like Wikipedia:The 1000 Challenge (Nordic). For this to really work we need diversity and exciting content and editors from a broad range of countries regularly contributing. At some stage we hope to run some contests to benefit Asian content, a destubathon perhaps, aimed at reducing the stub count would be a good place to start, based on the current Wikipedia:WikiProject Africa/The Africa Destubathon which has produced near 200 articles in just three days. If you would like to see this happening for Asia, and see potential in this attracting more interest and editors for the country/countries you work on please sign up and being contributing to the challenge! This is a way we can target every country of Asia, and steadily vastly improve the encyclopedia. We need numbers to make this work so consider signing up as a participant! Thank you. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 04:54, 20 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

However, I think that the way it is being used fails the first non-free content criterion. This criterion states that files used under claims of fair use may have no free equivalent; in other words, if the file could be adequately covered by a freely-licensed file or by text alone, then it may not be used on Wikipedia. If you believe this file is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the file description page and add the text {{di-replaceable fair use disputed|<your reason>}} below the original replaceable fair use template, replacing <your reason> with a short explanation of why the file is not replaceable.
  2. On the file discussion page, write a full explanation of why you believe the file is not replaceable.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace this non-free media item by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by creating new media yourself (for example, by taking your own photograph of the subject).

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified how these media fully satisfy our non-free content criteria. You can find a list of description pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, non-free media which could be replaced by freely licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification (7 days if uploaded before 13 July 2006), per the non-free content policy. If you have any questions, please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. xplicit 02:41, 25 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

ArbCom 2017 election voter message

[edit]

Hello, Jay2kx. Voting in the 2017 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23.59 on Sunday, 10 December. All users who registered an account before Saturday, 28 October 2017, made at least 150 mainspace edits before Wednesday, 1 November 2017 and are not currently blocked are eligible to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2017 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 18:42, 3 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

The article HanCinema has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Fails WP:GNG due to the lack of substantial coverage in independent reliable sources.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion.
