Observations on the thickness of two short planks

A ledge and battened door just has two (sometimes more) horizontal members to hold the vertical planks of timber together. A ledge and brace door has a diagonal plank which, via simple triangulation, ensures that the door does not sag. You can see them in any dingy castle in Europe.
BTW, if you ever poke your nose into my European neck of the woods - in between the Black Forest of Little Red Riding Hood and Count Dracula´s Transylvania - don´t forget to look me up in Vienna. I can give you the email address of my stepdaughter (who is a Sydneysider) and has been visiting a few times.

crossposting about wagtails

The reasons for the behaviour are actually slightly unclear although a recent study suggests that it signals vigilance to potential predators. I have updated the article and linked to the study. I didn't log on last night. Only to ask the question of how does one mature. But when someone replied to my question with links (mind you I asleep in my bed) "I" answered: *That's not going to help. Florence Scovel Shinn

Just went to the archives, before 1980 section.[3] and searched on Florence Scovel Shinn. Yeah, I noticed that too, probably there's a space that got in somewhere in the talk page one when I cut and pasted it. This link [4] should get the ones for FSS. A lot are pre 1922 public domain and free, hadn't realized that before. The obituary is a reasonable length 240 words or so.

Searching on "Florence Shinn" I also get this [5] Four Hurt as Bus and Auto Crash. in 1930 P (not free). Searching Florence Shinn without quotes gets loads more, but many aren't for her. John Z (talk) 10:05, 22 May 2008 (UTC)

Lizard on rock

Just dropped by, browsing, and saw the lizard. Mighty fine beast. I have small, brown, lithe lizards living in the crannies of my backyard in Perth. I think they may be a kind of skink, but I can't pin it down. They move fast and chase insects. Do you know of them? Retarius | Talk 08:31, 4 June 2008 (UTC)

Thanks for the pictures. The ones that I've observed on the walls in my garden are most similar to these(second picture down from top). They're dark brown and never grow beyond 10cm. I notice that they are active even now, despite the onset of "winter". I was surprised a couple of days ago to notice a juvenile specimen about 3.5cm, probably only recently hatched, scampering about on a hose I was coiling. At this time of year they should be heading for the bunker, but they've apparently been breeding recently. Of course, here it is, fifth of June, and the sky's clear and it's warm here in Perth, so perhaps they are able to be perennial now that the weather's changing. But I like academic types who can also write engagingly for a bigger audience and I also like exploring arcane bits of knowledge that some disparage as trivia. I currently torture students with the question "what time is it at the South Pole?" which when you follow it all through leads you to question assumed fundamentals such as the possibility of nailing down time and space on a tricky bit of topography such as our globe, particularly those corners we are close to. Mike Dash also uses his real name here, as indeed I almost do, but I vaguely recall your user name is a bit of a puzzle?clues to which are no longer on your page...? Ahh, Le Corbusier for the Villa Savoye which incidentally must win some award as well for the work of architecture that shows up best on google earth: 48 55 27.91 N 2 01 41.82 E. Love Palladio too, my top 3 are all practioners and writers! Mark Wigley was doing his humble PhD when I was a student, he assisted teaching on one design brief, a bach [7], in which I played a good prank on him. He kept calling for "less architecture" so I submitted a scheme that was a list of phone numbers to portable building companies, house relocaters, design-builders and real estate agents on the back of an envelope. Modernism here is second hand govt and commercial buildings, some more sophisticated work by Euro emigrees but mostly a prevailing dour Regionalism of grey concrete and wood that decorates the land like spilled porridge. To make myself plain here: I have cringed at the wording of some of your moves, of the "gently-lead-you-by-the-hand" ilk. In my work with the Internet community (predating my Wikipedia activity by many years) and the likelihood of cultural mismatches between posters even using ELF, I tend to err on the side of politeness to avoid possible offense. Fusty as the result may be, I think it's warranted and more easily excused than a flip remark that seems fun to most but flippant or worse to the unknown recipient.
