Why doesn't she get credit?

[edit]

Rant:

This is what I should be writing in the article. "In the last several years the British charts have been dominated by an eclectic group of female singer-songwriters. This movement is making ripples in America where it is being labeled as the Third British Invasion. The British chart success of the 2005 release of the album Aerial is credited with starting this movement". But while several articles have noted the trend none have credited Bush and nobody has used the term British Invasion. Edkollin (talk) 05:46, 25 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Update: The term "British Invasion" has come into use as seversl of these artist have had U.S. success. Edkollin (talk) 15:52, 21 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Kate Bush's Wardrobe malfunction

[edit]

I threw in the towel on this one and deleted the sentence. There is just no consensus for it. The editors in the Kate Bush article have been a unusually colloquial group and I don't want to mess around with that. The first few objections that there was no citing a point I agreed with. When I found citing I put it in thinking the objections had been satisfied. When the objections continued I feared this turning into a what I call a "no way no how" situation I have seen develop in many articles I have edited. This especially occurs in personal life or sexual matters. There may be 10 reliable sources reporting it but it violates WP:BLP or is trivial or the person being quoted is doing so for profit motive. It is a culture clash of sorts. Many editors want Wikipidia to be a online version of a vanilla 1950's encyclopedia while others want a reliably sourced YouTube/MySpace let it all hang out Wiki.

You made a great point about how rare her concerts are. And the Prince Trust while not the Super Bowl was not your everyday concert either.

Anyway thanks for your efforts. Edkollin (talk) 09:21, 21 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The Homeground + Kate Bush News & Info Forum: Non IE browsers

[edit]

I browse these forums because occasionally you get links to article worthy cites. I have occasional connectivity issues when using Firefox or Google Chrome. I receive a limited connectivity or local access only message. This usually occurs when moving between pages. I have a simple cable modem setup. This does not happen all the time but when it does I have to disable/renable the network connection a few times. Edkollin (talk) 06:47, 28 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Maajid Nawaz

[edit]

The vandalist is back and apparently does not understand that this is an encyclopedia. Their "reasoning" makes little sense as the wifes name is published¨ in various media covering the story of MN before and after his release from Egypt where she opposed his arrest. In fact she is even discussed on HT's own website. In addition there is nothing that proves that they divorced. I'm pressed for time or I would have looked into this i.e. reported this myself. Peaceblissharmony (talk) 12:16, 4 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I know how it is. I've seen a number of articles where people have tried to change it to suit themselves. The article on Wendy Carlos was especially contentious, as Carlos would prefer the world forget that she gained worldwide fame as Walter Carlos. K8 fan (talk) 00:32, 5 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for your reply. I know what you mean. It is especially true for articles, which are not monitored by any uninvoilved administrators. I have seen patterns in articles where references are removed to start with and then citation needed tag added for BLPS which will prompt an immediate removal of the content uncited. I have replied to your comments. It seems you have not understood the issue in the same way. By all means use the Amnesty account, but it is a secondary source and so should not be used ahead of a primary source based upon a COLLECTIVE interview which is therefore the collective claims of 3 people. Also - note that I consistently use the language "claims" for any personal assertions, whatever they may be, and "alleged" for anything not proven in a court of law. This ensures accuracy and neutrality. Those details in the Amnesty report which contradict several other accounts including the personal accounts of the 3 people (such as the claim that they were kept for 12 weeks of interrogation) are clearly incorrect and inconsistent with other more reliable reports. Sorry you feel that you have to lionise the man after watching him on CBS. Perhaps you should re-assess. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ksmith009 (talkcontribs) 17:32, 21 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

You are preferring a single newspaper report over one from Amnesty International. I suspect you have a bias towards minimizing the abuse Maajid Nawaz suffered.K8 fan (talk) 17:50, 21 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

A single newspaper report? ITS AN INTERVIEW WITH THE THREE PRISONERS AFTER THEIR RELEASE :)- so its an account verified by multiple people who witnessed it in this case. I think you need some time out to reflect. Maybe he is not what you thought after watching 60 minutes? Appears to me you have a bias in his favor. I am neutral. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ksmith009 (talkcontribs) 18:55, 21 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

File source problem with File:BDB voodoo cock ep.jpg

[edit]

Thank you for uploading File:BDB voodoo cock ep.jpg. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, please add a link to the page from which it was taken, together with a brief restatement of the website's terms of use of its content. If the original copyright holder is a party unaffiliated with the website, that author should also be credited. Please add this information by editing the image description page.

Thanks for uploading or contributing to File:Noe Venable album you talkin to me.jpg. Garbo

[edit]

Hi, I've rewritten the Garbo p. now since July (maintaining much previous information, but reorganizing, updating, and adding new stuff. Thanks for your addition to her legacy! I think the GG p. is incomplete, considering the magnitude of her impact, and I'm glad when others add to her legacy. Bravo to you and thanks.--Classicfilmbuff (talk) 19:18, 2 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I see F&H's comment. He makes a point. Can you find a direct reference to Greta Garbo? Or do you have another source? Greetings,--Classicfilmbuff (talk) 19:25, 2 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
As requested, I have added a second reference that specifically refers to Greta Garbo. Hopefully this information can be integrated into the body of the article. Pujol's identity was not revealed until 1985 when he published his autobiography, and not confirmed by MI5 until they de-classified his case file in 1999. So it is doubtful if Ms. Garbo knew of her Nazi-fooling male counterpart. I would hope she would have been delighted.K8 fan (talk) 21:56, 2 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Joan Pujol Garcia

[edit]

Hi. Any luck with his autobiography and/or Harris' book? Most (not all) of the citations needed are now filled in, as is a bit on his early life, although I've spotted a few places that need clarifying (Mills' involvement later on, for instance). Allens (talk | contribs) 03:20, 22 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I'd missed removing that bit. Mills was the original handler assigned to Pujol, but as he didn't speak Catalan, he passed control to Thomas Harris who "spoke it like a native". Mills is a fascinating character deserving of a WP entry - he was the son of the most prominent circus operator in the UK, and ran the circus after the war. Mills' involvement was exaggerated by the TV show as Harris had died in a car accident in 1964. So when Pujol traveled to the UK in 1985, he met with Mills instead. The TV show simplified Harris out of existence. I've been distracted working on other projects recently and haven't had a chance to work on the Pujol entry. Thanks for your extensive work.
My only quibble would be that modern English usage depreciates "actress" in favor of "actor" for both sexes. See the Screen Actor's Guild awards which opens with a montage of men and women saying their name and "...and I'm an actor". So Greta Garbo could be called an "actor". K8 fan (talk) 03:43, 22 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
That's modern English usage - what about in the 1940s? And the context makes it unclear whether he was referring to Greta Garbo or Pujol as the greatest actor in the world. Allens (talk | contribs) 12:50, 22 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you.K8 fan (talk) 15:39, 30 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, hope you do not mind me contacting you direct rather than on the WP:ENGLAND page. A couple of minor things that need looking at, probably will be picked up at review stage but best to get in before they pick over it.

  • The phrase "movie theater" needs looking at as it does not really fit in with British English as indicated on talk page. It could be that all of those sources use that in which case it will have to stay but I would see if Cinema can be used, it changed to "film theatre" or even just change the spelling of theater to theatre for British usage.
  • There is a mixture of usage when referring to the war "Second Word War", "World War II" and WW2 - I would suggest that "Second World War" is more in keeping with British usage, though "World War II" would be acceptable.

Apart from that it looks a good article, well done. Keith D (talk) 13:48, 1 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Good points, and I'll make the changes as well as doing a second pass on the prose. Thank you. K8 fan (talk) 14:52, 1 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you. I've spent a lot of my time on several other articles and I'm afraid I've let that one languish for a bit, but I should really get back to it in time for the D-Day anniversary. I got stuck trying to find an interactive tool to improve the family tree of GARBO's fictitious spy network. I need to add more detail, and editing the raw code is really painful. TWL HighBeam check-in

[edit]

Hello Wikipedia Library Users,

You are receiving this message because the Wikipedia Library has record of you receiving a one-year subscription to HighBeam. This is a brief update to remind you about that access:

  • Make sure that you can still log in to your HighBeam account; if you are having trouble feel free to contact me for more information. When your access expires you can reapply at WP:HighBeam.
  • Remember, if you find this source useful for your Wikipedia work, make sure to include citations with links on Wikipedia: links to partner resources are one of the few ways we can demonstrate usage and demand for accounts to our partners. The greater the linkage, the greater the likelihood a useful partnership will be renewed. For more information about citing this source, see Wikipedia:HighBeam/Citations
  • Write unusual articles using this partner's sources? Did access to this source create new opportunities for you in the Wikipedia community? If you have a unique story to share about your contributions, let us know and we can set up an opportunity for you to write a blog post about your work with one of our partner's resources.

Finally, we would greatly appreciate if you filled out this short survey. The survey helps us not only better serve you with facilitating this particular partnership, but also helps us discover what other partnerships and services the Wikipedia Library can offer.

Thank you. Sent by MediaWiki message delivery (talk) at 16:46, 13 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Newspapers.com check-in

[edit]

Hello K8 fan,

You are receiving this message because you have a one-year subscription to Newspapers.com through the Wikipedia Library. This is a brief update, to remind you about that access:

  • Please make sure that you can still log in to your Newspapers.com account. If you are having trouble let me know.
  • Remember, if you find this source useful for your Wikipedia work, to include citations with links on Wikipedia. Links to partner resources are one of the few ways we can demonstrate usage and demand for accounts to our partners. The greater the linkage, the greater the likelihood a useful partnership will be renewed. Also, keep in mind that part of Newspapers.com is open access via the clipping function. Clippings allow you to identify particular articles, extract them from the original full sheet newspaper, and share them through unique URLs. Wikipedia users who click on a clipping link in your citation list will be able to access that particular article, and the full page of the paper if they come from the clipping, without needing to subscribe to Newspapers.com. For more information about how to use clippings, see http://www.newspapers.com/basics/#h-clips .
  • Do you write unusual articles using this partner's sources? Did access to this source create new opportunities for you in the Wikipedia community? If you have a unique story to share about your contributions, let me know and we can set up an opportunity for you to write a blog post about your work with one of our partner's resources.

Finally, we would greatly appreciate it if you filled out this short survey. Your input will help us to facilitate this particular partnership, and to discover what other partnerships and services the Wikipedia Library can offer.

Thank you,

Non-free rationale for File:Happy Rhodes Lowest Note.png

[edit]

Thanks for uploading or contributing to File:Happy Rhodes Lowest Note.png. I notice the file page specifies that the file is being used under non-free content criteria, but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia is acceptable. Please go to the file description page, and edit it to include a non-free rationale.

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified the non-free rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described in section F6 of the criteria for speedy deletion. If the file is already gone, you can still make a request for undeletion and ask for a chance to fix the problem. If you have any questions, please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.

ATTENTION: This is an automated, bot-generated message. This bot DID NOT nominate any file(s) for deletion; please refer to the page history of each individual file for details. Thanks, FastilyBot (talk) 03:00, 25 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Kirsty MacColl image

[edit]

A photo you took of Kirsty MacColl graces her article: File:Kirsty MacColl at Double Door Chicago.png. But on the image description page the date is given as 2010, which cannot be right as she died in 2000. Would you be able to correct that based on your memory and/or records of when you took the photo? Even a very approximate date would be helpful, e.g. plus or minus a couple of years. Thank you. File permission problem with File:Moogy Klingman Highline Ballroom.png

[edit]

Thanks for uploading File:Moogy Klingman Highline Ballroom.png. I noticed that while you provided a valid copyright licensing tag, there is no proof that the creator of the file has agreed to release it under the given license.

If you are the copyright holder for this media entirely yourself but have previously published it elsewhere (especially online), please either

  • make a note permitting reuse under the CC BY-SA or another acceptable free license (see this list) at the site of the original publication; or
  • Send an email from an address associated with the original publication to permissions-en@wikimedia.org, stating your ownership of the material and your intention to publish it under a free license. You can find a sample permission letter here. If you take this step, add {{permission pending}} to the file description page to prevent premature deletion.

If you did not create it entirely yourself, please ask the person who created the file to take one of the two steps listed above, or if the owner of the file has already given their permission to you via email, please forward that email to permissions-en@wikimedia.org.

If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Non-free content, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:File copyright tags#Fair use, and add a rationale justifying the file's use on the article or articles where it is included. See Wikipedia:File copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have provided evidence that their copyright owners have agreed to license their works under the tags you supplied, too. Here is a list of your uploads. Files lacking evidence of permission may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described in section F11 of the criteria for speedy deletion. You may wish to read Wikipedia's image use policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.

This bot DID NOT nominate any of your contributions for deletion; please refer to the history of each individual page for details. Thanks, FastilyBot (talk) 10:00, 22 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
