Question from Tech Buy (05:28, 8 December 2023)[edit]

Hey, Lectonar I'm very new to Wikipedia and just made 3 edits from which none of them is removed. How many approved edits do I need to make a positive impression on Wikipedia? My purpose in editing on Wikipedia is to give a link to my website but before I want to make a positive impression on Wikipedia with great edits. Can you tell me how much time it will take? --Tech Buy (talk) 05:28, 8 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

That's difficult to answer...essentially, it's not about the number of edits, but their quality. Please have a read of Wikipedia:About to learn what Wikipedia is, and WP:NOT to learn what it is not. Start editing slowly, and you will learn if Wikipedia is the correct vehicle to post a link to your website. If your (ultimate) intention is just to advertise your website, Wikipedia might not be for you. Lectonar (talk) 09:49, 8 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Semi-protection request[edit]

Thank you for the semi-protection of Wikipedia:WikiProject Jehovah's Witnesses/Practices of Jehovah's Witnesses. For completeness, can you do the same for Wikipedia:WikiProject Jehovah's Witnesses/Doctrines of Jehovah's Witnesses? That is the other article that was archived when those two articles were merged. It has been considerably less subject to alteration than the other archived article, though that could change. (The two articles were merged in 2007, and the merged article was subsequently split again in 2010.)--Jeffro77 Talk 02:55, 16 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Done. Lectonar (talk) 09:25, 27 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you. Though it appears you protected the project page rather than the subpage?--Jeffro77 Talk 03:28, 29 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, and now done too. Lectonar (talk) 08:29, 29 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Slowisfastwithcoffee (17:59, 16 December 2023)[edit]

Thank you Lectonar; I'm new to Wikipedia as an editor. I am Canadian and I started my first entry on biographees. I went through all the great Canadian non-fiction books I read this year (I am a big reader) and found that some of the authors who had contributed a lot less or in insignificant ways to Canadian society had entries in Wikipedia, and the reverse was true, too. So I did an entry on an author "Neil Seeman" and that was simple and seemed to go well. (We'll see; it has to be formally approved). One editor properly pointed out that I'd put in too many "promotional" sounding references, which were easy to remove. I have about 10 other Canadian authors I'd like to do bios on. A question for you: for authors, I've found that "notability" is not as simple as for an academic. I think that Wikipedia promotes academics as notable who really aren't. I am a (non-notable) academic and I do not have a Wikipedia profile. I basically feel that Wikipedia puts way to much stock into things like an h-score or an academic title but that's really unfair, especially to authors. There are authors who have made such a huge contribution to Canadian life and letters but they seem to only have a Wikipedia profile if they're academics, too! I'm generalizing but am I seeing things properly? Is there an article I can review on this? Sorry to drone on about this, but I feel that as an academic I have a good insight into this. There's nothing scientific about an h-score; it can be manipulated really easily. Anyway, thank you! I want to keep things balanced, so will also try to write up drafts of Canadian authors from each province and territory. I find eastern-Canadian authors are underrepresented. --Slowisfastwithcoffee (talk) 17:59, 16 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry for the late reply....well, we have WP:AUTHOR...you will have found it. As for the different criteria: Wikipedia has a bias slightly tilted towards science, so academics have an easier time of it. But still, these rules have grown over the years, formed by countless discussion for forming consensus. Wikipedia has a definition of notable that isn't the same as the one used in everyday context; the basic problem for most biographies is the existence (or non-existence) of reliable sources. If it can't be sourced properly, there is no article. As for deep questions like yours: try bringing this up at the village pump, or on the talk-page of Wikipedia:Notability (people). Question from Colin.1678 (03:22, 17 December 2023)[edit]

Hello! I've been working on my sandbox page and recently I've come across an issue where when I use the same citation and different parts of the article, it will list them separately in the references list, even though they are the exact same citation. I'm not sure how to fix this. Thanks! --Colin.1678 (talk) 03:22, 17 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

hello, sorry for the late reply. If I understand you correctly, Wikipedia:INTEGRITY might help. Lectonar (talk) 09:18, 27 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Question from The tall cinephile (17:35, 5 January 2024)[edit]

Hello. How does one upload a JPEG headshot from my hard drive that I took and own? Sandbox isn't allowing me to do this. --The tall cinephile (talk) 17:35, 5 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Images are a fickle topic on Wikipedia, and I am not an expert. I can point you to those two help-pages, though: Help:Upload and Help:Introduction to images with Wiki Markup/1. If possible, images (and files in general) should be uploaded to Wikimedia Commons. I hope that helps. Lectonar (talk) 08:25, 8 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Question from TKG290 (11:17, 16 January 2024)[edit]

Hello Lectonar. Thank you for extending your assistance to a new wiki hopefuls like me. I am deeply thankful as I would need all the help for Wikipedia. I would like to start an article for The Kanoo Group. I work in the communication department for this organization and would like to claim this page according to rules by Wikipedia. This page encountered a lot of concerns since it was due to lack of judgement on our part on how to edit a page - and got blocked. Kindly advise on next first steps. --TKG290 (talk) 11:17, 16 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@TKG290: Would it be about this Yusuf Bin Ahmed Kanoo Group? And you working in the communication department gives a strong conflict of interest. Lectonar (talk) 08:08, 17 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Lectonar, I would like to disclose that I do work for the organization and would like to create the page. It is not Yusuf Bin Ahmed Kanoo Group but only The Kanoo Group. I have read this and would like to be guided - The Wikimedia Foundation's Terms of Use require that all editors disclose their "employer, client, and affiliation with respect to any contribution for which they receive, or expect to receive, compensation":
Further information: meta: Terms of use/FAQ on paid contributions without disclosure
Editors must disclose their employer, client, and affiliation with respect to any paid contribution to Wikipedia.
Employer: the person or organization that pays, either directly or through intermediaries, a user to contribute to Wikipedia. This includes cases where the employer has hired the user as an employee, has engaged the user under a freelance contract, is compensating the user without a contract, or is compensating the user through the user's employment by another organization. TKG290 (talk) 07:30, 19 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
It isn't enough to declare it on my talk-page, though. Here is more for you to have a read: Wikipedia:Plain and simple conflict of interest guide. Lectonar (talk) 10:39, 26 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, How do i create citation? --Anaeme Innocent Rapuluchukwu (talk) 16:20, 23 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, this might be of help: Wikipedia:Citing sources. And probably this too: Help:Your first article; be aware that it isn't recommended to create article about oneself, though. Also have alook at WP:PROMO. Regards. Lectonar (talk) 10:37, 26 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Request From Justinbenji (9:12, 27 January 2024)[edit]

Please Lectonar

Kourage Beatz NSI was deleted under G12 and you protected the page for being repeatedly created. I am a wikipedia novice and did not know what to do and I thought using my friends accounts publishing it back and adding these informations would solve the issue. I most say this here, I am not connected to the person, I am his big fan and he is someone that is well respected in the Nigerian music industry and seeing these celebrities talking about him, so I decided to add him to wikipedia without properly knowing how to, so I humbly request for another chance to correct my mistakes. I did my research and found out that Kourage Beatz NSI Who is also known as Skopy Lonky won award at TNMA where the likes of Mr Eazi, Kizz Daniel, Falz, Adekunle Gold etc.[1] have too and the article that was deleted didn't have theses informations. Kourage Beatz NSI have two studio albums Playboy and NEVER CHANGED, JUST GREW UP which featured international producers and artists.[2] [3].

Please I humbly request for unprotection of the page and be given the opportunity to rewrite this article from a neutral point of view and be summited for review. Thank you.

Here is a sandbox of the article. User:Justinbenji/sandbox. J U S T I N B E N J I (talk). 08:12, 27 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

There have been too much problems with people trying to create this page, so I will not unilaterally unprotect it. I have moved your sandbox to Draft:Kourage Beatz NSI for you to work upon; please follow the process laid out at Wikipedia:Articles for creation. Be aware that this will be closely monitored. Regards. Lectonar (talk) 07:41, 29 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for your consideration, I will make sure to follow Wikipedia:Article for creation process. Best. J U S T I N B E N J I (talk). 11:02, 29 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Appeal[edit]

Greetings Lectonar, I write to you to extern my concern in regards to the resolution that you gave to my request for page protection earlier this day [4] suggesting that there may be edit warring taking place. I indeed think edit warring is taking place on the article, alongside what very likely is serious sockpuppetry by an editor that has been proven, uses VPNs[5][6] (compare edits such as [7] and [8], and summaries such as [9] and [10]), which is why I think it is necessary to protect the page (and others may need protection aswell, as per the diffs I've linked above the editor does not show signs of wanting to stop or discuss at all, as you can see in the talk page Im talking to myself[11][12]), I would like that you reconsidered your ruling as this is a very atypical situation. Pob3qu3 (talk) 20:57, 3 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Not as unusual as you think; there's disagreement on sources, if they are reliable, on how they are read, each side thinks they are in the right. Pages for protection is not the place to decide who exactly is in the right. What the article needs are more eyes; the edit warring noticeboard will provide these. You could also try WP:3O. Regards. Lectonar (talk) 07:00, 4 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for your reply Lectonar, and yeah its not that unusual, nonetheless I think we all agree that it would be better if sockpuppeters and users who do wikilawyering in outright bad faith were more unusual. Pob3qu3 (talk) 21:03, 4 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Assistance and advice required from Kai Lau (19 April 2024)[edit]

Dear Lectonar

I would like to get your assistance and advice after an editor has made overzealous deletion edits, particularly targeted at edits I have made.

On 10 July 2023, Anwegmann wrote on my talk page "Please stop using the conditional tense when writing about footballers. Using "would" instead of the simple past tense of a verb is incorrect in most situations in English. "He would transfer to second-tier side..." is not correct. Rather, it should read "He transferred to second-tier side..."

After thanking him for his advice I corrected some of my grammatical errors and thought nothing of it. After some time has passed it seems some of my grammatical errors have creeped up. This seems to have triggered him and he is currently on a warpath in deleting everything I have touched under the banner of "Improper tense usage". This includes edits that are grammatically correct, properly referenced or even stats that do not have any grammar in them.

There has been no cooperation, civility or good faith shown by him to improve any of the articles I have edited. I am shocked by the sheer callousness and venom Anwegmann has inflicted on me and certainly feel he has a vendetta against me as he is intentionally targeting edits I have made.

I would like to get your advice on what to do.

Regards Kai Lau (talk) 12:58, 19 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

This editor's grammatical issues have been mentioned now by two separate editors, and the inappropriate use of conditional tense has been shown in dozens of articles, along with paragraphs that are awash in severe grammatical errors. I am happy to lay off correcting these edits, if it is a policy-based issue, as I don't want to run counter to the rules and standards of Wikipedia. But the overarching issue I am having is the assumption here that it is seemingly the jobs of other editors to correct grammatical mistakes of this editor, which is not appropriate or representative of good faith. And to paint me as "callous" and "venomous" is unnecessary. The warnings were nearly a year apart, and I have no ill will toward Kai Lau. I just want Wikipedia articles to have proper grammar. That is not callous or vindictive. Needless to say, as well, to describe my edits as "a warpath in deleting everything I have touched" is absurd. This editor has made more than 10,000 edits, and I have reverted five of them because they contained too many grammatical errors for me to fix. I took my own time to fix quietly the issues on six articles, bringing my total interaction with this editor's edits this year to eleven. I am happy to ignore this user in full, if necessary for the peace of the community. But that doesn't change the need for this editor to use proper grammar in their edits. Anwegmann (talk) 15:17, 19 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
