Here is a headline for the USMC Portal:

Updating Portal questions

[edit]

It's update time.... I've changed the quote and the bio. What are your ideas/plans for featured article and photo? —ERcheck (talk) @ 11:10, 25 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I saw you making the changes to the Portal earlier today. To be honest I have been avoiding it. I have nothing for the FA at the moment. Any ideas?? If not give me an hour or so and i'll come up with something.--Looper5920 11:12, 25 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I see two updates needed ... one for this weekend; and, I'd like to have an update for July 4th. With that in mind, the FA for the 4th should be a heavy hitter. There seemed to be an pattern — infantry, aviation, bio, infantry, aviation ... but then we had memorial, and band. I'm thinking of VMGR-152 for the featured photo for the July 4th, so, keep that in mind. Do you have another battalion to feature? —ERcheck (talk) @ 11:21, 25 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
There are other photos, but only the aerial photos are USMC, the rest are either the construction company's or the Heritage Foundation's (which I don't think fall under PD). —ERcheck (talk) @ 11:37, 25 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I am leaving the FA and FPhoto to you. :-) —ERcheck (talk) @ 11:44, 25 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Leave Looper out of your RFA. The only reason you want to add him is because of what you perceive as his personal attacks on you, so you can slant the arbcom committee. I think Looper would agree its best he not get involved with an already put forward situation, where quite a case of information has already been put forward. --zero faults |sockpuppets| 12:39, 27 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Parris Island

[edit]

I had noticed that you had really been making some great changes to Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island. We were thinking about making this the feature article in the USMC Portal for the 4th of July weekend. I saw that you have some ideas lined up for the article and wondered if there is any help I can provide to make this article worth featuring. Thanks and let me know.--Looper5920 09:13, 30 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Actually there is! If you really want to help you can rewrite the History section. Whoever wrote it the first time literally cut and pasted it from Beaufort SC Military bases, Parris Island Marine Corps Recruiting Depot South Carolina. I was going to go to the External links and rewrite the section with footnotes. If you can use any books during the process, all the better! Palm_Dogg 13:15, 30 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Update on Medal of Honor recipient articles

[edit]

Two milestones:

  • All USMC Medal of Honor recipients from the Korean War now have articles.
  • Over 190 articles completed.

Only 10 remaining for the Vietnam War. All of WWI and WWII are completed. — ERcheck (talk) @ 23:34, 1 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

  • UPDATE: I met my goal — finished all of the USMC Medal of Honor recipients for the Vietnam War for the 4th of July. Final article (William T. Perkins, Jr. is now nominated for a DYK. — ERcheck (talk) @ 04:47, 4 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
    • Awesome job. You have been pumping out really quality articles at the cyclic rate. I was just thinking the other day that it might not be a bad idea to create a sharp looking list for each conflict that had pics, descriptions, etc... Fight make a good feature list. You got the hard part out of the way and that is creating all of them. If I ever get off my ass and create the rest of the A/C squadron articles I might be able to put together a decent list. Also, I have been slacking on unit articles as of late but I am starting to ramp up production. Again, great job and Happy 4th.--Looper5920 05:06, 4 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

2/9

[edit]

Looper, thanks for letting me know. Yes, I will look forward to making some contributions. It really brought back some memories. It was nice that you used the 2/9 patch I uploaded. I designed the patch of the "Walking Dead". I was unaware that the 2/9 is now 2/4, what a shame. I guess I'm still sentimental and old fashioned for somethings. Semper Fi Tony the Marine 17:13, 3 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

  • I don't think that it is correct to say that 2/9 is now 2/4. 2/9 is an inactive battalion it's Marines were were just renamed but the battalion's history has not become part of 2/4's.. There is a good chance that the battalion will stand up again. The Marine Corps' end strength was increased to 180,000 last year. 1/9 was activated again last November and the Mrine Corps has been looking to stand up another infantry battalion. "Hell in a Helmet" may be back hooking and jabbing before you know it.--Looper5920 20:24, 3 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

As you have a Jesuit background, I thought you might be interested in this article. I came across it in re-categorizing general Medal of Honor recipients into their respective service branches. It needed some work, so I've added photos, reference, expanded, etc. It could use a little more work. (Hint ;-) — ERcheck (talk) @ 22:14, 3 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

Hi. You have breached the WP:3RR policy (please review it carefuly). Please do not revert the article for at least 24 hours. Breaches of 3RR are subject to blocks, however, I'm inclined to go with a warning as this appears to be your first such breach. Thx. El_C 07:58, 4 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

How about an Operation article?

[edit]

I notice that Operation Dewey Canyon is redlinked on five pages (including a request)

  1. List of military operations
  2. Wikipedia:Requested articles/Social Sciences and Philosophy
  3. Wesley L. Fox
  4. Robert H. Barrow
  5. Marine Air Support Squadron 2

As you seem to have the ability to create a great diversity of articles, perhaps you might be interested in creating this one? — ERcheck (talk) 01:32, 6 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

If you are interested, here is a link with some info. — ERcheck (talk) 01:34, 6 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Done. Needs alot of work but may not be a bad DYK candidate. ...Operation Dewey Canyon was the last major U.S. Marine offensive of the Vietnam War?

Wow! Great work! I made a few edits. I think it would make a great DYK candidate. I've got one USMC article from July 4th currently on the DYK suggestion list; but, I don't think that would make a difference, as one is a bio and the other a battle/operation. Go ahead and self-nominate. BTW, could you find any PD images? — ERcheck (talk) 06:20, 6 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

2nd Battalion 9th Marines

[edit]

How do you like what I've done so far? Once you get me started, there is no stopping me. Thanks for including me in your "Excellent Wikipedians", I'm honored (smile). Tony the Marine 05:25, 6 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

  • The honor is mine working with you. I wish I took the levelheaded approach that you and ERcheck always do.Looks good so far. I think the medals at the end of the WWII section may be better incorporated into the larger list at the end. Take a look at 3rd Battalion 1st Marines as a possible example. I am about to finish an article on Operation Dewey Canyon. Might be able to add that into the article also as 2/9 took part.--Looper5920 05:44, 6 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I just took a look at the 3/1 article and it likes great. You're right the medals should go at the end but, what about the "streamers" awarded, should they stay where they are or should they be moved? By the way, A Happy belated 4th of July. Semper Fi Tony the Marine 05:59, 6 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

  • I take the term streamer out and just substitute the word medal. Easier to understand for those not familiar with the subject and avoids having to create redirects. Happy belated Fourth as well.--Looper5920 06:06, 6 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
[edit]

How about the Armed Forces Staff College, Norfolk, Virginia. [3]? I'm surprised that there isn't an article already. — ERcheck (talk) 02:10, 7 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Want a new challenge?

[edit]

I noticed that you had made a reference addition to Battle of Saipan. That motivated me to do some cleanup in formatting and copyedits. After reading the article, and some of the USMC monograph, I think that this would be a good candidate to try to get to Featured Article status. There seems to be sufficient reference information in the online sources, especially Hoffman's work, to make a go of it. If you are interested, let me know. You have a great knack with battles and operations, so I think you'd make the ideal primary lead on it. — ERcheck (talk) 14:46, 8 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

See this note on my talk page. It was brought to my attention that there is a guideline for the location of {{tl:portal}} links — in the "See also" section. I've asked TheGrappler not to revert any of the links - to give us a chance to discuss whether or not you/we wish to make a case for a change to the guidelines. Give it some thought. (See my comments on his talk page.) — ERcheck (talk) 15:15, 8 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

  • If the consensus is that they need to be moved then so be it. I will move them as I come across them but I am not going to spend an entire day or two trying to find them all right away. There are battles worth picking and this to me does not seem like one of them.--Looper5920 02:50, 9 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
    • If you see the discussion on my talk page and TheGrappler's talk page, you will find that I could not find a consensus discussion; TheGrappler could not either. It may have been a while back; or, it may be a guideline that the template creator put on the page. As you don't feel that it merits a discussion to ask to re-visit the guideline, and I don't either, then it seems no further discussion needed between us on what the formatting will be for new USMC articles. Yes? — ERcheck (talk) 05:12, 9 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
      • BTW, I do feel the same way about moving the links. With over 1000 articles containing USMC Portal links, I think the time is better spent in creating content than making a mass change. — ERcheck (talk) 05:21, 9 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Check out a new USMC bio on the Main Page DYK

[edit]

I hope the article will be there then you get back online. On the Main Page DYK, William T. Perkins, Jr. (1/1) is the top article featured, with his photo. — ERcheck (talk) 18:32, 8 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

1/9 question

[edit]

I note that 1st Battalion 9th Marines is on the USMC portal's "expand" request list. In the intro to the article, it says the 1/9 was reactivated in 2005. I don't find any official info in usmc.mil pages. Do you have a reference? — ERcheck (talk) 23:39, 10 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

  • From what I know, the Anti Terrorism Battalion of the 4th MEB that was established after 9/11 was transitioned to 1/9 in November of last year. The last defense Budget authorized an increase in the USMC end strength to 180,000. Out of the 6,ooo+ Marines added, the Commandant wanted 2 more infantry battalions. This is the battalion's website 1/9 Website. They are still being formed so there is not much info available

Thanks. I've made a few little changes already and will add a little more based on your links above.

BTW. I also noted that Cactus Air Force was also on the expand list. I've seeded the article with external links as resources for expansion. Want to take it on? — ERcheck (talk) 00:44, 11 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

  • Yeah, I am about to roll out a VMF-221 article which entails the creation of VMSB-241 since they were the two squadrons that were decimated during the Battle of Midway. The commander of VMSB-241 was Maj Loftus Henderson, the 1st Marine aviator to die during the war and the man that Henderson Field on Guadalcanal was named after. I'm scratching my head. Silvestre S. Herrera made DYK and somebody added his "Primier Merito Miltar" to the military info box. The List of United States Marine Corps aircraft squadrons page is looking great! — ERcheck (talk) 01:44, 25 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

  • Thanks for the note. I never realized how big the project was going to be when I started it. I have just ordered a bunch of books so hopefully in a few months it will be where I want it to be. There is a dearth of info on decommissioned reserve squadrons, squadrons created late in WWII that never got overseas and just some WWII squadrons in general. I haven't even really touched the prior to WWII squadrons other than creating redesignations. You don't happen to live near Pensacola do you? If I could get into the Naval Aviation Museum that would help clear much of this up. ANyway, thanks for the note and it appears the RFA is going well. Glad to see the community recognizing your contributions. --Looper5920 02:45, 25 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
    • Akin to taking on USMC Medal of Honor recipients. I've finished the major conflicts of the 20th century. The Civil War, Banana Wars, etc., in general have more limited information and very short citations. No, I'm not near Pensacola at all. The Naval Aviation Museum there is great. (Have you had a chance to visit the National World War II Museum[5] in New Orleans? Worth a visit if you are in the neighborhood. Thanks on the RFA. I appreciate your support. — ERcheck (talk) 22:29, 25 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Infobox images

[edit]

Thanks for tagging the articles the Rlevse noted on my talk page. I've added assessments to them.

Comment on the Guy Gabaldon article. The Navy Cross image had been in the infobox, but I moved it down with the citation. See my comments on Tony the Marine's talk page (referencing del Valle, but still the same reasoning). It is my practice on only add a medal alongside the infobox image if the medal is the Medal of Honor. I'd like to hear your thoughts. — ERcheck (talk) 23:04, 26 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Request: I've just finished a new article on Ben L. Salomon. Would you look it over? I'd like to submit it for DYK. (The tag being something about dentist/surgeon and number of recommendations before receiving the Medal of Honor.). — ERcheck (talk) 02:45, 27 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

  • I made the Navy Cross edit last night. Honestly my only thought was that it didn't look right where it was at. I agree that only MOHs should be in the infobox. You are the bio guy so I will defer to your better judgement on its placement. If not then people will be putting National Defense Service Medals up there. I'll take a look at the Ben Salomon article as well.--Looper5920 03:23, 27 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
  • I removed it completely, with a message on the talk page. I don't think it is a key illustration for the article; I agree that it didn't look great — and as a stub, it had more image/infobox than info.
  • Feel free to make the DYK nomination yourself, if you think it appropriate. — ERcheck (talk) 03:43, 27 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

USMC Template

[edit]

I think that's a perfectly good idea; though I think the Template:US Navy navbox displays a better selection of subtopics. For outsiders, subcommands aren't wholly interesting and not among the most important things they're looking for. As a start, all the "Main Article" links should probably be put into such a template.

--Mmx1 05:25, 28 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

  • I note that the USN has a template {{US Navy navbox}}; and also the USAF uses a similar template ({{USAF}}). But, the Army does not use the same style. I think the USN and USAF ones look a little better and provide an easier navigation of the main topics, though they provide different information. A template for USMC could/should be customized to display the pertinent USMC info (as noted by Mmx above). — ERcheck (talk) 11:11, 28 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I've just added an infobox. I'll finish it off this afternoon. — ERcheck (talk) 11:21, 28 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Barnstar

[edit]

Thanks for the barnstar, though my tirelessness pales next to your 12k+ edits. On a sidenote, what do you think of the existing extensive Army vs. Marine uniform comparison? I think most of it can be shuffled off as Marine uniform details under the appropriate uniform type (e.g. boot blousing), and the section shrunk to distinct differences, not comparing where rank insignia are. Everybody's new utilities also complicates it; I'm not even that familiar with the ACU's or the Navy working uniform. It seems the sleeves rolled with camo or white out is an obsolete comparison, though for historical purposes it's still worth a mention; historically it was one distinguishing characteristic. --Mmx1

I don't think you did this on purpose, but when you were reverting Neurotically Yours while it was being vandalised you reverted to a bad version, which caused the person reverting after you to revert to your version which was bad. I've returned the article to its pre-vandalised state.--Crossmr 14:58, 30 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Portal update — your turn

[edit]

I've made the August updates for DYK, In the news, and the quote. I'm working on the leadin for the bio.

I'm leaving photo and article to you.

See the Coordination page ... I've made a major rearrangement. There are a number of in the queue ideas for the photo; I've just uploaded a Harrier formation photo, which provides two choices for an aviation photo (refueling one is the other in the queue).

Portal suggestion

[edit]

In updating several Wikipedia pages on U.S. military awards and decorations, I noticed that the page on Badges of the United States Marine Corps might benefit from the addition of a USMC portal. Agree? Over to you. Jack Bethune 04:07, 31 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

  • Thanks for the heads up. I added the Portal link. Please feel free to add them to articles you think they are appropriate for. Cheers--Looper5920 05:28, 31 J

Quick look

[edit]

hi Looper, can you look at Ariel Weinmann I would like confirmation the way title/rank/service assignments etc reads correctly. TIA. --Paul E. Ester 17:05, 4 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

GA candidates

[edit]

What do you think about selecting some articles to put up for Good Article nomination? Some ideas:

  • Joe Foss
    • Foss is good but still needs some work. For a guy that did so much the article just needs more information. The WWII piece needs additional info as well the squadron patch for Joe's Jokers (named after him). Agree that it is close though.
  • Robert E. Galer

Others? — ERcheck (talk) 21:49, 4 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

    • I would hod off on this one. Still to much like the official bio.

On another note I am very close to finishing the USMC template I had spoken of a week or two ago. Is there a List of United States Marine Corps Medal of Honor recipients? I think it would good in there. This is what I have so far, let me know what you think:

I have the page in my Sandbox, but haven't posted it. The USMC recipients for all of the major conflicts (WWI, WWII, Korea, Vietnam) of the 20th century are all wikilinked and have articles. Most of the inter-war awards and the 19th Century awards are omitted due to the lack of information available and/or the different standards for award at the time might make their articles of questionable notability. Perhaps a single "list" completed for these conflicts, with format similar to the List of Hispanic Medal of Honor recipients? — ERcheck (talk) 09:21, 5 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Check it out

[edit]

I'm working on a Template to post on 2/9. I'm inviting you to take a look. I think it'll look good in the article. See Here!. Semper Fi Tony the Marine 00:38, 5 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

  • I see what you are getting at but IMHO I am afraid it might be a bit big and overshadow the rest of the article. What about something like a rack of ribbons like shown on the 3/1 page placed on the right hand side?--Looper5920 00:44, 5 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

15th Marine Expeditionary Unit GA nomination

[edit]

15th MEU is nominated for GA status. The commenting review has asked for inline reference. Are there other source used for this article beyond the 15 MEU site? — ERcheck (talk) 09:10, 5 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

  • It's great that you are getting the references in place. I've had a few edit conflicts while you've been adding them. I'll check back later. You keep adding, and I'll make the formats consistent later today.
  • Reading through the article, it will need a lot of clean up (less America-centric) before it goes passes GA.
ERcheck (talk) 13:59, 5 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

See alsos for MEU's — see 24th MEU. Since the MEU consists of an infantry battalion, a helicopter squadron, and a service support group (which redirect to logistics groups), what do you think of this list:

  • List of Marine Expeditionary Units
  • List of United States Marine Corps battalions
  • Marine Corps helicopter squadrons (used the category)
  • List of United States Marine Corps Marine Logistics Groups

ERcheck (talk) 14:30, 5 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

  • List of Marine Expeditionary Units
  • List of United States Marine Corps battalions
  • List of United States Marine Corps aircraft squadrons
  • List of United States Marine Corps Marine Logistics Groups

These are my thoughts for the see also. MEUs have harriers as well as helos so the overall a/c squadrons is probably more applicable.--Looper5920 14:34, 5 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Two additional things to improve 15th MEU:

  1. Get rid of redlinks — Operation Stabilise, Operation Swift Freedom, and Task Force Tarawa.
  2. A review for encyclopedic tone.

Take a look

[edit]

Take a look now, I need input. Tony the Marine 09:45, 5 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Somehow my Thank you for the barnstar, which I posted a couple of days ago got lost through the cracks, so here I am posting it again:

Looper, thank you for the barnstar and your kind words. I believe that the article made GA status becoming the first Batalion article in Wiki history to do so. Like I have said before, without you and ERcheck, I couldn't have done it. You because you originated it and served as my motivational factor and ERcheck because of his formating and reference organizational skills. I truly believe that we three can make an excellent team. anti-americanism

[edit]

My new text is POV?? as was the previous!! and why remove the image? --Frogsprog 12:51, 5 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

  • Put the image in if you want but the rest of the text is garbage and I will revert it again unless it is cleaned up. Lines like "It is public knowledge" just don't cut it as sourced info and the rant on French railroads and the BBC does not belong--Looper5920 12:55, 5 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
As a European citizen I am very well placed to comment on the US governments blatant stance against European Socialism, Perhaps we should consult a European administrator, rather than allowing an American to plague an artical with US patriotism!--Frogsprog 13:00, 5 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
You are lucky that you have caught me after I turned my new leaf on the wiki. Two weeks earlier and the response you would have gotten from that last post would have been pretty good stuff. Unfortunately I am going to remain civil and on my best behavior. I say please seek out a "European" administrator and they will tell you the same thing... cite your work with reputable sources and no one will have any problems with your additions. I would love to argue with you off-line as to the pros and cons of European socialism but please don't accuse me of plauging anything when you have been adding your unsubstantiated opinions vice info that has been researched. Cheers--Looper5920 13:08, 5 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The Truth

[edit]

To tell you the truth, I don't like the rack that I created, so to the garbage can with it. I hated it (smile). I did something better. Tony the Marine 17:06, 5 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

  • Love the new look. Classy, and conveys what you want but does not overpower the page. My only fear now is that eventually we'll have to do it to every unit. Daunting....

Task Force Tarawa

Are you working on an article for Task Force Tarawa? — ERcheck (talk) 23:39, 6 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

15th Marine Expeditionary Unit

[edit]

This article is great! I'm almost afriad to touch it. It should make GA easily. Hey Looper, take a look at this Dr. Jose Celso Barbosa Post Office Building Designation Act and tell me what you think. Tony the Marine 00:41, 7 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
