50th and 51st Regiments of Foot

[edit]

Anyone interested in doing a page on the very short-lived 50th and 51st Regiments of Foot? Raised in Massachusetts in 1754, they surrendered to the French in 1756 - see wikipedia page on William_Pepperrell?

Although technically raised in 1754, the numbering on the British Army List suggests that they were allocated numbers when raised in 1745 before Pepperrell's successful expedition to capture Louisbourg in August of that year, but that both regiments were disbanded after that successful campaign, only to be raised again in 1754. The 62nd (Royal American) Regiment was raised in 1754, and after the 50th and 51st surrendered at Oswego in 1756, the 62nd became the 60th, and in due course the Kings Royal Rifle Corps (KRRC). --pepperrell 09:22, 5 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
