Markup help with editing,

[edit]

Hello, Perspeculum!

You wrote me a nice welcome on my talk page when I first announced that I was new to editing WP articles (which is still the case.) I can usually figure out the markup or text formatting by reading long enough but there are two things that elude me.

1. When trying to leave my signature, I leave the string of tilde marks just as instructed. However, this only leaves an UNlinked version of my user signature. Later, WP (a bot, I imagine) goes through and says that the preceding was unsigned by xerobane on X date. So my entries always end up with something like...

Xerobane 17:24, 29 November 2011 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Xerobane (talk •

I copied and pasted that from a previous edit so it only varies slightly from the original. But the question remains... why does this happen? Am I placing the string of tildes incorrectly?

2. My second question has to do with the citation of sources. I understand I need to supply a link to any page (that wasn't created by me) that supports my facts but I get completely lost when it comes to adding the number in the box -[8] for example- and then the link in the references section of an article. For some reason, the number box never shows-up properly (likely due to a markup error on my part) so I always just end up forgetting about making a contrib and move on.

Any help you could give me would be much appreciated. Thanks, xerobane — Preceding unsigned comment added by Xerobane (talkcontribs) 12:28, 14 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hey buddy! Glad to see you're still with us!
With the first problem I would suggest that if you are definitely using four tildes with no surrounding characters, your preferences might be off in the user control panel. Click on 'My preferences' in the top right, scroll down to the middle and you should see a bit about your signature. Ensure the freetype box is cleared and the tick box underneath is UNticked. See if that works. If not, let me know.
As for referencing, it can be a little tricky but to save you the hassle with the markup, you can use a tool called 'ProveIt' which can be enabled from the 'gadgets' screen of your preferences under the 'editing' section. There's a link there to how it works as well, but it's pretty self explanatory. If the link is appearing in the text you're probably using the alternative markup. An example of the numbered markup would be:
<ref name=order2003>{{cite web|url=http://www.statutelaw.gov.uk/ |title=The Misuse of Drugs Act 1971 (Modification) Order 2003 |publisher=Office of Public Sector Information |accessdate=2009-06-15 }}</ref>
The 'ref name=' tag allows you to use the same reference again by simply using the tag <ref name=order2003 /> and this will then use the same number instead of creating a new reference. It is also the format that creates the number in the first place.
For none-web references, you might therefore use: <ref name=ABC> Insert book name, page number etc here </ref>
In terms of getting the piping in the right order and the correct markup language, ProveIt will help a lot as well as speed it up. I highly recommend it!
Does that help at all? Let me know if you have any further questions! ῤerspeκὖlὖm in ænigmate(talk)(spy) 13:00, 14 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

The Wikipedia Library now offering accounts from Cochrane Collaboration (sign up!)

[edit]

Cochrane Collaboration is an independent medical nonprofit organization consisting of over 28,000 volunteers in more than 100 countries. The collaboration was formed to organize medical scholarship in a systematic way in the interests of evidence-based research: the group conducts systematic reviews of randomized controlled trials of health-care interventions, which it then publishes in the Cochrane Library.

Cochrane has generously agreed to give free, full-access accounts to 100 medical editors. Individual access would otherwise cost between $300 and $800 per account. Thank you Cochrane!

If you are stil active as a medical editor, come and sign up :)
