Die Zeit, die Tag und Jahre macht

Happy New Year

2024

Like 2019, remember? -- Gerda Arendt (talk) 21:24, 1 January 2024 (UTC)

Happy New Year, to you as well, Gerda Arendt! --Rosiestep (talk) 13:41, 2 January 2024 (UTC)
The 2023 picture is from the Abel Fest in Köthen, celebrating the tercentenary of Carl Friedrich Abel, a viol virtuoso, composer and concert organiser in London (together with Bach's youngest son), born on 22 December 1723 in Köthen, where the new catalogue of his works was introduced, - my story today. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 21:58, 5 January 2024 (UTC)
Gerda Arendt, What a feat, the Catalogue of Works of Carl Friedrich Abel. --Rosiestep (talk) 08:19, 6 January 2024 (UTC)
Thank you, the author will like to hear that. (We chat on my German page.) --Gerda Arendt (talk) 23:39, 9 January 2024 (UTC)
I have a DYK on the Main page, but my story would be different, about Figaro, - this Figaro. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 15:09, 12 January 2024 (UTC)
Gerda Arendt, congratulations on the DYK! --Rosiestep (talk) 13:27, 13 January 2024 (UTC)
I could have done without a trip to ANI for it, but I slept through it. On the Main page now: the person who made the pictured festival possible --Gerda Arendt (talk) 20:11, 16 January 2024 (UTC)
Gerda Arendt, unaware of what the ANI situation is that you mention. As for the photograph of the Spiegelsaal of Schloss Köthen, it is magnificent. Nothing like that where I live. --Rosiestep (talk) 22:04, 16 January 2024 (UTC)
As I said, the notice arrived on my talk while slept, and when I woke up it was already settled, and I received an outstanding barnstar, so for me it's all good ;) - On the Main page: the person who made the pictured festival possible --Gerda Arendt (talk) 22:19, 16 January 2024 (UTC)
12 years precious! - just arrived on La Palma, - hope to meet cats again. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 16:36, 21 January 2024 (UTC)
cat met - they have a coastal trail all around the island, and a little side road went to a house on a cliff overlooking the whole northern coast, with this drago and the cat, and a nice group of people offering a drink and chat, not minding very limited vocabulary = vacation --Gerda Arendt (talk) 21:04, 21 January 2024 (UTC)
Gerda Arendt, 12 years ago... thank you for the precious memory. Also, nice cute cat, who, by the way, has found a second spot on my talkpage. --Rosiestep (talk) 22:02, 21 January 2024 (UTC)
The double cat is an extra honour, thank you, meow ;) - Also extraordinary music derived from garbage by Vivi Vassileva - don't miss watching --Gerda Arendt (talk) 22:09, 21 January 2024 (UTC)
story · music · places

Thank you for improving articles in January! I remember Ewa Podleś on the Main page, and had - believe it or not - two musical DYK today. Shalom chaverim. On vacation as you know - I therefore missed that you lost your cat. I met two character cats yesterday (before I knew that) and thought of you, and another one today, but the pic didn't come out as hoped. Patience please. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 22:31, 25 January 2024 (UTC)

Congratulations and thank you on the DYKs. Certainly, the world is a better place with more music being spotlighted, and you are very skilled at doing that, Gerda Arendt. Patience... I'm good at that... so yes, of course ... and enjoy the rest of your vacay. --Rosiestep (talk) 16:23, 26 January 2024 (UTC)
Thank you! Today: Anna Nekhames, the article in which a reviewer found nothing interesting. - More pics to come, enjoying thoroughly! --Gerda Arendt (talk) 20:40, 26 January 2024 (UTC)
I find it almost unbelievable that a reviewer found nothing interesting in Neihames'article; maybe they should stretch their limits of what's interesting. --Rosiestep (talk) 16:39, 28 January 2024 (UTC)
Taking tons of pictures, 23 chosen for 23 Jan, 6 uploaded, too tired for more - on my talk you see that it's the birthday of Mozart and our conductor ;) --Gerda Arendt (talk) 00:06, 28 January 2024 (UTC)
I, too, take tons of pictures when I travel, but rarely take the time to upload them, even though, IMO, some are quite wonderful. How do you convince yourself to do that? --Rosiestep (talk) 16:39, 28 January 2024 (UTC)
Easy: to share them with you! Just uploaded 7, 3 with a cat, and all on a wall to the sea - like "yours" today - and the first two are the same cat (the first a bit hard to detect). --Gerda Arendt (talk) 00:07, 30 January 2024 (UTC)
Great photos, Gerda Arendt. As you can see, I'm borrowing one of the cats; thank you. ;) --Rosiestep (talk) 20:14, 30 January 2024 (UTC)
thank you - today another friend's birthday, with related music --Gerda Arendt (talk) 22:17, 30 January 2024 (UTC)

Donatello (catalogue of works)

@[user:Rosiestep|Rosiestep], happy New Year! You really seem to be a communicative person with all your adresses and appearances (and a smart one, too, even telegram). So I want to ask, do I have to be honored by having my lemma been reviewed by you? (since you didn't correct anything). Is there a rule, that admins review new lemmas, no matter what? What does it mean that you reviewed the article?

- I originally created the page at de:wiki and translated it afterwards. I wasn't finished with both, but I am currently on a grand detour, editing other stuff, that I am now occupied with. Beside a whole bunch of fine tuning and further referencing in the catalogue itself, I haven't been quiet sure about the somewhat extensive notes on the whole thing (style, too much, too generic, too specific...). Beside the missing inline references (yet), I question the positioning of this rather long text, before you get to the meat. I asked johnbod about it and he suggested, that I could move the whole explanatory text beneath the tables. So I am keen to ask, what do you think? Do you have any suggestion? I mean, you may just compliment me,-) MenkinAlRire 16:04, 2 January 2024 (UTC)

 • Hiya MenkinAlRire. Thank you for your kind words. Thanks you, too, for creating the list article, Donatello (catalogue of works). I can see that you put a lot of work into it. I really enjoy doing WP:NPP as I get to quickly learn about all sorts of things that I might not otherwise come across in my wiki work (or life!). There is no requirement that admins serve as New Page Patrollers, and if they do wish to participate in that work, they, like all other volunteer editors, can choose what they want to review. Today, I was reviewing articles sorted within WP:NPP History grouping, and that's how I came across the list article on Donatello's catalogue of works. I'll add specific comments regarding article improvement here, Talk:Donatello (catalogue of works), in order to centralize the conversation. --Rosiestep (talk) 17:18, 2 January 2024 (UTC)

Break

Looks like February or late January is when it's going to happen this winter. Late-Jan into mid-Feb is typically our coldest part of the season but most often our driest too. I've set a target for the 1st of Feb which means I probably wont be here for Valentines Day and my birthday. It's been an absolute joy to create the Cat's page for you and to keep it updated. I'll keep you informed of the exact day as it comes closer. --ARoseWolf 16:42, 4 January 2024 (UTC)

Hi ARoseWolf. I realized a couple of weeks ago that this message would be coming eventually. Honestly, it makes me a little anxious, knowing that you're dealing with an Arctic winter. But I hope it's magical, peaceful, restful, and fun! I'll be waiting to hear from you once the days become longer; it's a happy moment when that occurs, when you're back in touch.
Miss you already,
Rosie & the cats --Rosiestep (talk) 17:05, 4 January 2024 (UTC)
It makes me anxious too and I'm one going on break. Just know that Wikipedia and a love for this encyclopedia/community is in the very fabric of my being. I will always return if I can. I learned a phrase while I was tracing my past that I think is appropriate for this occasion, though I'm not gone yet, Donada'govi Tohidu. It literally means "Until we meet each other again, good peace" but Tohidu is an much more interesting part of the phrase but it doesn't simply imply a peace "that is good" but peace in "body, mind and Spirit". It is wishing more than feelings and more than emotions but a state of peaceful being, existence and balance until the world circles and brings us back together again. --ARoseWolf 17:17, 4 January 2024 (UTC)
Here's to anxiousness and peacefulness being in harmony. , --Rosiestep (talk) 08:19, 6 January 2024 (UTC)

The New Page Reviewer's Silver Award

For over 2,000 article reviews during 2023. Well done! Keep up the good work and thank you! Dr vulpes (Talk) 02:54, 10 January 2024 (UTC)

Hi Dear admin Rosie. Before this, you helped me and reviewed my articles more about the women blue project (Women in red). I must thank you for your helps. I have a question about the above topic. If you have the time and don't mind this kind of stuff, I'd really appreciate it if you read this draft. The topic was deleted 7 months ago. So I edited it with independent sources and secondary references by policy on living people as nobles in the draft. I spent more than 50 hours and some editors and admins helped me in this field. I have the utmost respect for them: Dear admin Liz who revived the draft KylieTastic for read And given wonderful advice,Goldsztajn who was so kind and Spending a lot of time for read draft and wrote excellent comments and Johannnes89 who is a global sysop (admin). Please read the history of the draft and Comments. If you have a positive opinion about this draft, as a seasoned and experienced manager, please review it. With respect. —Patricia (Talk) 19:20, 11 January 2024 (UTC)

 • Hi Patricia Mannerheim and thanks for stopping by. I reviewed the article but immediately felt like I was out of my comfort zone as the article is about a living man while my expertise is regarding dead women. Furthermore, I can't read Persian/Farsi and am not comfortable with translation apps for languages for which I lack familiarity. You are already working with a good team (the 4 editors mentioned above) so listening to their feedback would be my recommendation. Happy editing! --Rosiestep (talk) 22:55, 11 January 2024 (UTC)
Hi Dear Rosie. regarding dead women: Anne Franz ,Aino Pohjanoksa Aleksandra Leliwa-Kopystyńska,...I participate in the project and write articles every day.—Patricia (Talk) 15:23, 16 January 2024 (UTC)
Patricia Mannerheim, that is impressive. I especially enjoyed reading the article about Aleksandra. Nice picture of Anne. Now regarding the article about Aino, I'm confused if this is a man or woman. The word "Woman" is actually in the lead sentence and this should be removed. Instead, include the words "she" and/or "her" thereafter; this will suffice to establish gender. Why I am confused about Aino's gender is that in the article, I see "... his thesis ..."; shouldn't it be "... her thesis ..."? --Rosiestep (talk) 15:41, 16 January 2024 (UTC)
Thank you very much for your very important note. Agreed with u. my bad. you right.Sometimes I make strange mistakes. I have to try harder. —Patricia (Talk) 15:47, 16 January 2024 (UTC)

Condolences

I'm so sorry to hear about your cat. Losing a pet is painful. Dylan620 (he/him • talkedits) 22:54, 23 January 2024 (UTC)

 • (edit conflict)I am so sorry to hear about your loss, Rosie. Our pets become our children, do they not? They fill our lives with comfort, joy, and a whole lot of frustration (lol). But we love them and our hearts are heavy at times like this. Biggity, has a Song that remains part of you. All life resonates but those that resonate on a frequency with our own form a connection that last lifetimes. It is how a wolf, though wild and free, when reunited, recognizes the human that saved it from peril even after years of separation. I hope it is something of a comfort to know Biggity's resonation still resides with you and has become a part of you, forever. Thank you for sharing this Song with us. --ARoseWolf 14:43, 24 January 2024 (UTC)

Metrics for Women in Red

Hi Rosie. Over the years you've been listing Totals on the WIR Metrics page. As we're now in February, the stats for last year are probably more or less stable. You might therefore like to list the total for 2023.--Ipigott (talk) 11:55, 2 February 2024 (UTC)

Thanks for the reminder, Ipigott; done. And a friendly FYI to my pagestalkers: anyone else who wants to update the Women in Red metrics page from time to time is welcome to do so. --Rosiestep (talk) 17:34, 2 February 2024 (UTC)
It looks as if these figures coincide very closely with the overall reduction in new EN articles over the past few years. But it would help if we could somehow provide additional incentives to increase the year-by-year proportion of biographies of women.--Ipigott (talk) 17:54, 2 February 2024 (UTC)
Ipigott - I'd be curious to know if other large WikiProjects, e.g., MILHIST, have experienced the same phenomenon.
I'm also curious if we aren't in touch with what events the world wants us to facilitate. For example, while I'm interested in temperance women, very few other people are, so maybe instead of doing temperance in January, we should have kicked off the year with an "internet culture" event, e.g., Youtubers, Tiktokers, social influencers of that ilk. Another example: our Sports events are really popular with some editors who rarely if ever communicate on our talkpages; maybe we should create a hashtag campaign, like #1day1woman, to focus on sports, with no end date to the campaign. These are ideas I've been thinking about; maybe pagestalkers have some ideas, too.
As for incentives, we could say thank you more often. For example, I received a nice barnstar from WP:NPP for the work I did in that area in 2023. --Rosiestep (talk) 20:25, 2 February 2024 (UTC)
Yes, I also received one of those. By going through NPP pages related to women, each month I come across quite a few contributors who I am abke to encourage to become members of Women in Red. In addition to the 21 members who registered in January, there are several more who just "join" by including the WiR user box on their user page. I'm able to monitor use of the tag through this category check facility. I think you were right to suggest temperance for January although I'm afraid I was too involved in education to contribute. Over the years, I have nevertheless included quite a few Danes involved in temperance. They are well documented in the Kvinfo biographies of Danish women. Side-by-side with more popular interests, we need to deepen coverage of the role of women in history. Statistics are important but the historical record is surely one of our most important goals.
It might indeed be a good idea to promote internet culture, maybe also in connection with the games and interactive fiction included in electronic literature, although I must say I'm always rather wary of reviewing articles about Youtubers and Tiktokers. It seems to me that apart from general basic requirements for notability, there's not much guidance on related criteria, such as number of followers, success in related TV programmes, etc. Do you happen to know if anyone is working on this? It's an important evolving sector and one which is beginning to steal interest away frpm the "old-fashioned Wikipedia". Why is it that we don't make more extensive use of Youtube images to illustrate our articles? I believe they meet Creative Commons requirements. As for women in sport, I think we should once again use the Olympics as a trigger, but also extend it to cover winners outside the Olympics in related sports. Perhaps we could arrange a three-month special event in this connection. Another area where there seems to be considerable interest is local politics. Many of the articles related to extensive service in non-parliamentary local administrations, municipal councils and as mayors of small towns are deleted as without coverage in national newspapers, etc., they are considered insufficiently notable. But these women are frequently responsible for initiating significant policy changes and improving the standards of community life. I think there might be wide interest in improving the visibility of those currently in service as well as those who have been recognized for their past involvement. But we should first provide more guidance on grounds for notability.
Finally, one thing I am rather worried about is the current lack of strong interest from Wikimedia in promoting improved coverage of women. Isn't it time once again to make this a highlight of international events and encourage national Wikimedia groups to devote more efforts to support? Now that interest is turning to other matters such as the Russian alternative to Wikipedia, the political takeover of the Croatian Wikipedia and the coverage of Israelis and Arabs in connection with the Gaza conflict, interest in research projects or publications on Wikipedia's coverage of women has sadly diminished. Somehow it needs to be revived.--Ipigott (talk) 07:38, 3 February 2024 (UTC)
A cuppa for you, Ian, and some coffee for me.
Ipigott - What about developing a thankfulness campaign associated with our work? Maybe one of our monthly "Tips" could be to remind people to thank WiR editors for new article creations. Barnstars are really nice, but quite a bit more effort. Some way of saying thank you, though, is what's on my mind.
Yes, you're right that politics is a hot topic. What if WiR did 3 activities for 3 month each: social influencers (Apr, May, June), sports (Jul, Aug, Sep), politics (Oct, Nov, Dec)? As for providing more guidance on grounds for notability, don't know if that's really up to us. But all ideas welcome. All 3 of these topic areas are quite relevant to present-day, though sports and politics would also have some historical women. In any case, this would certainly demonstrate an understanding of what's topical and might, ergo, encourage more editors to participate and/or an increase in metrics. At the same time, totally agree with you that we must also focus on deepening coverage of the role of women in history as, if not us, then who.
Wikimedia does have a lens on promoting gender gap improvement, but it's apparently not as visible as it seems. I'll connect with some folks about this.
Thanks for your thoughts, Ian. Always nice. --Rosiestep (talk) 10:58, 3 February 2024 (UTC)
 • Recognition is good. I find that people are often grateful for a few words of appreciation rather than a barnstar. We could take into account and contribute to essays such as Wikipedia:WikiProject YouTube/Notability. The three-month events you suggest seem like a good idea. Thanks for the tea. I have tea for breakfast (Earl Grey), a beaker of coffee around 11 am and sometimes an after-dinner espresso.--Ipigott (talk) 11:18, 3 February 2024 (UTC)
 • I think, Rosie, it might be useful to include your proposal for three three-month events under "General ideas for improving Women in Red" on our Ideas page where others will have an opportunity to comment.--Ipigott (talk) 10:37, 8 February 2024 (UTC)

Margaret Keenan Harrais

Hi @ARoseWolf and Michaelh2001. I thought that Margaret Keenan Harrais might be of interest to you. She lived a very full life in Alaska for almost 5 decades, doing different things in different places. I could only find 1 Public Domain photo and that's included in her biogrpahy. If by any chance you stumble across additional ones, it would be great to add them. No worries if you lack time/inclination or if you don't reply until warmer weather. Happy February, and hope all is well! -- Rosiestep (talk) 21:31, 3 February 2024 (UTC)

February music

story · music · places

My calendar story today is about Michael Herrmann celebrating his birthday. (back homw, photos to come but no more cat, for various reasons) -- Gerda Arendt (talk) 23:25, 4 February 2024 (UTC)

Gerda Arendt, welcome back home. Have you attended some of his Rheingau Musik Festivals? --Rosiestep (talk) 10:48, 5 February 2024 (UTC)
Funny question - all when I was in Germany, from the very beginning. For 2024, I booked already (during vacation, - they start at midnight, and 10 minutes later, some seats are already gone). - Michael Herrmann invited me (as one of about 1000) to his 70th birthday at the Kurhaus Wiesbaden (article written with Dr. Blofeld), shaking hands at the entrance with every single one. - I had no time yet to include the booked concerts in this year's images, but hope it will happen later today. Look for RMF last year for the feeling ;) - Today - as it happens - is the next 80th birthday, but I don't think I ever experienced the tenor on stage, because I saw the Monteverdi opera's later, with Zürich visiting in Wiesbaden. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 11:03, 5 February 2024 (UTC)
Today I am happy about a singer on the Main page (at least for the first hours), after TFA the same day last year. - No, the RMF updates didn't happen, - probably only after the vacation pics. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 15:39, 7 February 2024 (UTC)
Gerda Arendt - I had not heard the term heldentenor before (Stephen Gould (tenor)). Thank you. --Rosiestep (talk) 20:07, 8 February 2024 (UTC)
We have that article since 2005 ;) --Gerda Arendt (talk) 20:39, 8 February 2024 (UTC)
When I made today's story I was sure Alfred Grosser would appear on RD today, which may happen or not but I go to bed. - Cheese cake dessert on a beach is the last pic of January. I met cats but one was out of focus, one so fast that I got only tail (twice), and came two others (dozing) and the bus - I preferred the bus because the next would have been two hours later ... --Gerda Arendt (talk) 23:39, 10 February 2024 (UTC)
That's understandable! --Rosiestep (talk) 16:20, 12 February 2024 (UTC)
;) - Thanks to Seiji Ozawa. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 22:08, 12 February 2024 (UTC)
Gerda Arendt - What an amazing career (Seiji Ozawa). --Rosiestep (talk) 22:06, 13 February 2024 (UTC)
yes, - did you see my personal memorial? - ... and today a woman and her views --Gerda Arendt (talk) 22:11, 13 February 2024 (UTC)
Gerda Arendt - I really like street scene photography so it was nice to learn about the work of Helga Paris. --Rosiestep (talk) 15:18, 14 February 2024 (UTC)
thank you! - ... and for Valentine's Day an invitation to the theatre where they first played Elegy for Young Lovers - in the new pics, the only animal is a lizard, and even that is hard to see ;) --Gerda Arendt (talk) 21:25, 14 February 2024 (UTC)
last vac pics - no cat, just crabs -- the image, taken on a cemetery last year after the funeral of a distant but dear family member, commemorates today, with thanks for their achievements, four subjects mentioned on the Main page and Vami_IV, a friend here. Listen to music by Tchaikovsky (an article where one of the four is pictured), sung by today's subject (whose performance on stage I enjoyed two days ago). --Gerda Arendt (talk) 16:44, 20 February 2024 (UTC)
I certainly enjoy listening to music by Tchaikovsky, Gerda Arendt. Thanks! Sorry to hear about your family member, dear. I wish I had your patience to upload pics. Mostly, I have good intentions but lack the motivation to do so. --Rosiestep (talk) 11:49, 21 February 2024 (UTC)
Listen to music from Ukraine if you like, - I heard it in 2022, and the November concert (at a different church) raised a truckload of winter clothes. My story today is also from my life: I heard the singer in 3 of the 4 mentioned musical items. I sang in yesterday's, then, there was a couple in the audience, friends, and he terminally ill, and the music played at his funeral 4 months later ... - she, however, went along on last year's trip to La Palma. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 10:44, 24 February 2024 (UTC)
Gerda Arendt A clicked through to them; a lot of connections. I'll listen later in the day as it's quite early here now. I hope she is doing okay. Yes, Zen cat was unusual; glad you liked her (I decided it was a her.) --Rosiestep (talk) 13:36, 24 February 2024 (UTC)
Yes, she is. She follows me on Wikipedia ;) - Today's story celebrates a woman's birthday. She sat right in front of me when I took the picture at a lovely concert, celebrating her son's 60th. I thought she was 90 today, - no, 91 already. You can listen, starting at the piece he dedicated to her, Op. 1. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 21:06, 28 February 2024 (UTC)
Nice! One of my grandsons started playing the violin, now in his 3rd year. It is his favorite subject at school. I hope he sticks with it; I think he is quite good. My grandmother had been a music teacher -violin and piano- and gave me the option of learning one or both. I picked the latter. In retrospect, the former would have been a good choice as it's more transportable. All that is to say, that strings are beautiful, be it sextets or otherwise. --Rosiestep (talk) 14:45, 29 February 2024 (UTC)
My sister played violin, and my brother - as you know - plays double bass, yes, strings are lovely, but sextet is something special. How many string sextets do you think have an article? - more music and flowers on Rossini's rare birthday --Gerda Arendt (talk) 15:38, 29 February 2024 (UTC)

Looking for other editors interested in improving an article

Hi Rosiestep! The subject of the biographical article at Mania Akbari has asked for a number of corrections and expansions, described at User talk:Womanfeminist2024, and I've been helping a bit but don't have enough capacity at the moment to really dig into this work. Do you know of somebody who would be interested? She's done wonderfully interesting work, and I'm hoping for this to become a stronger article. Thank you! Dreamyshade (talk) 15:34, 7 February 2024 (UTC)

Hi Dreamyshade. Thanks for reaching out; it's always nice to connect with you. I'm not sure that I know who would have time and inclination to help with this topic. I focus on dead women, particularly writers, so unfortunately, it wouldn't be me. But Women in Red has facilitated at least 1 event in the past regarding "Film+Stage" and I know we have plans to do another one in 2024, so I think a good next step is for me to bring up this BLP at the Women in Red talkpage to see if someone is able to support it now. Best, --Rosiestep (talk) 17:35, 7 February 2024 (UTC)
Dreamyshade, I see the comments have started on the WiR talkpage. I expect there may be others this month. --Rosiestep (talk) 20:07, 8 February 2024 (UTC)

Just stopping by briefly

I just wanted to say how much I appreciate @SusunW:, @Gerda Arendt: and you, Rosie, for your unbelievable impact on my editing here and my life in general. I know I've said it before but I will keep saying it as often as it comes to my mind or I feel you need to hear it. I have went through a lot in my life, some I have buried under years of trying to forget. But with my birthday coming up and the likelihood I wont be here for it I wanted to say I count this community, as dysfunctional as it can be sometimes, like family and this project, this encyclopedia, means a great deal to me, plus there isn't a lot of interaction with other human beings going on where I am so enjoy every moment I get. All those somewhat broken thoughts to say this, thank you for being amazing editors and friends. --ARoseWolf 18:31, 9 February 2024 (UTC)

ARoseWolf You usually make me smile. This message made me pause. "I won't be here" because of the usual winter weather or more literally because your health problems have returned? Please, please be the former. You are always in my thoughts and will continue to be a positive influence and inspiration. SusunW (talk) 18:47, 9 February 2024 (UTC)
Such a beautiful message, ARoseWolf; thank you dearly. Please write soon in answer to SusunW. For now, I shall assume you are referring to your annual winter break. Be well, my friend. --Rosiestep (talk) 19:52, 9 February 2024 (UTC)
SusunW and Rosie, I will put your mind at ease. I do not have any health issues that I know of at the moment. I'm finding we planned a little better for winter this year or it has just not been as severe as years past. Still the thaw brings its own challenges when it arrives. Our creeks swell in size. The melting snow turns everything into a muddy mess. It truly is a sight to behold. For now we stay locked in winters grip. A constant tug of war between the warm coming up and the cold coming down. And we live in a wind tunnel of sorts. Our valley with tall mountain peaks rolling down into a very old and very deep lake carved by glaciers. I love our valley, there is so much color, even in the white landscape of winter. You both be safe and see you soon. --ARoseWolf 14:02, 12 February 2024 (UTC)
ARoseWolf I am so happy to hear of your good health. You paint such beautiful word pictures that it is as if I can see where you are. Hoping the thaws don't cause many problems. SusunW (talk) 14:44, 12 February 2024 (UTC)
SusunW, you see things through my eyes by way of the words I write. Some of my favorite authors could paint vivid pictures with words. I lived a thousand lives all over the earth in every age through story telling. To have a fraction of the magic they had would be an honor. I lack the patience of course. I am too much wild, like the flowers growing every Spring and Summer. Unlike those flowers, my wild nature never withers. lol Both a blessing and a curse. It manifests itself here on Wikipedia, occasionally. It's like containing a wild stallion behind a fence made of popsicle sticks. --ARoseWolf 15:53, 12 February 2024 (UTC)
ARoseWolf patience or nor, wild or tame, you have a beautiful gift. It makes me smile and I am so privileged to hear your voice. SusunW (talk) 16:03, 12 February 2024 (UTC)
ARoseWolf happy to hear how things are going for you, especially the good health. Cannot overstate how precious that is. Your description of the scene around you certainly helps me visualize what it's like in 'your neck of the woods'. Beautiful, majestic, cold! Stay warm, dear. In my yard, tulips are pushing their way out ... about 6 to 8 inches now. Won't be too long before they bloom. --Rosiestep (talk) 16:20, 12 February 2024 (UTC)
Do you already know their color? --ARoseWolf 16:55, 12 February 2024 (UTC)
ARoseWolf as my stepson planted them for me years ago, I do. Most are yellow; a few are white. --Rosiestep (talk) 19:20, 12 February 2024 (UTC)
I love Yellow. It's the color of joy and I hope they bring some much joy into your life, not just the emotion though the emotion is tied to it but the state of being, the state of being full of joy in mind, body, and spirit. Of having joy consume you and changing how you see the circumstances around you like wearing something over your eyes and then removing it and revealing the vibrant colors of the earth around you. That is what I hope for your Today, Rosie. --ARoseWolf 12:36, 20 February 2024 (UTC)
ARoseWolf, I, too, love yellow! Wishing you a yellow day, dear. --Rosiestep (talk) 16:40, 20 February 2024 (UTC)

Need help with "deceased" user

I've just come across something very strange. Frostly registered as a new member at 05:09 today but from the user page (which only contains "in memoriam") no longer appears to be active, ditto user talk. Can you look into this, Rosie, and see what has happened. It seems to me this may be the result of the last user page edit by Frostly but I really don't know how to deal with it.--Ipigott (talk) 10:21, 17 February 2024 (UTC)

Hi Ipigott. I looked at the userpage and talkpage but I don't know what else to think. The "in memoriam" though, links to another username? Is there a WikiProject or some such that helps with these issues? Sorry that I don't have the tech experience with this. --Rosiestep (talk) 10:33, 17 February 2024 (UTC)
It seems to me the problem has resulted from the last edit on the Frostly user page with a template beginning DISPLAYTITLE which was probably intended in connection with in memoriam but the effect has been to delete everything else. Do you think I could just delete it, restore the earlier user page text and mention it on the Frostly talk page or is this something an administrator should do?--Ipigott (talk) 10:48, 17 February 2024 (UTC)
Ipigott, as this is sensitive, I would suggest asking here. --Rosiestep (talk) 11:00, 17 February 2024 (UTC)
I posted it on the page you suggested but I see that there is very little activity there. I then found this where under "What if a person is wrongly dead" there is advice for those wrongly posted as dead. But there is nothing on how other contributors can rectify things. Perhaps you can advise me how to proceed, either suggesting other administrators, stewards, or whatever or maybe a Meta page where such problems can be resolved. (As far as I can see the problem needs to be solved on Meta as it applies to all Wikipedia projects and language versions.) I also tried to fix things myself but that has resulted in blue snow over the user page. (I would not be surprised if I am soon blocked for this as when I tried to delete a page I had uploaded to Commons.) Sorry to bother you once again but I think we should try to resolve this unfortunate mistake within hours and not weeks.-Maybe others who read this page will be able to help. I have looked at Wikipedia:Requests for administrator attention but cannot find anything suitable.--Ipigott (talk) 13:22, 17 February 2024 (UTC)-

She didn't have an article, only half a paragraph at David Gottesman, and 2 redirects to there. She just donated $1 billion to Albert Einstein College of Medicine, where she is Chairman of the Board of Trustees and long-time professor. Largest ever donation to a medical school. Free tuition forever. There are some issues, e.g. defining her in terms of her husband when she's had a heck of a career herself, that I'll have some problems dealing with. You are exactly the person needed there! Thank for any help. Smallbones(smalltalk) 16:01, 26 February 2024 (UTC)

Hi Smallbones. Thanks for your note. It's always nice to hear from you! Ruth Gottesman, wow, indeed! As I work almost exclusively on dead women, I'd suggest notifying Women in Red instead as there are some editors there who do work on BLPs. Cut & paste of the comment you wrote here would be fine. Hope that's okay? --Rosiestep (talk) 22:39, 26 February 2024 (UTC)
Thanks Rosie! User:Muboshgu got on the case almost immediately and it's already nominated at Did you know? You got to be quicker next time, to get the good ones! (joke) Smallbones(smalltalk) 22:46, 26 February 2024 (UTC)
You're right, Smallbones. We've got some really awesome editors around here who'll jump at the first sign of some cool article that would benefit from more attention. Thanks, though, for thinking of me. Hope I get a chance to travel back in your direction again some time soon. It's been too long! --Rosiestep (talk) 14:45, 29 February 2024 (UTC)

March flowers

story · music · places

in memory of the birthday of a friend who showed me art such as this, and of Vami --Gerda Arendt (talk) 14:21, 7 March 2024 (UTC)

Rossini's Petite messe solennelle was premiered on 14 March 1864, - when I listen to the desolate Agnus Dei I think of Vami. - Also travelling, in the country where the flowers grow and I met some great cats! Just wait ;) --Gerda Arendt (talk) 22:57, 14 March 2024 (UTC)

@Gerda Arendt: - Returned home last night and just getting caught up... music, flowers, cats, and those who are gone. Safe travels, my friend. --Rosiestep (talk) 13:36, 15 March 2024 (UTC)
Travels were safe and wonderful! Returned early morning, and finally managed first day of Madeira pics, with a cat, also with some red like yours today! I'll try to upload one day per day, the next two sets are assembled, you can look forward to three cats around a fish. Actually the fish was already dead and on a plate, and the cats were on the stony beach, and looking closer one is pictured twice. (There were four in waiting ...) - Don't miss today's composer story, with an opera trailer. I briefly and per chance met the composer during intermission of that wild piece. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 16:21, 20 March 2024 (UTC)
Welcome back, Gerda. Can I just say that this steak tatare is exquisite. Do you recall what wine was paired with it? (Also, I did notice the nice black and white cat by the red hydrant. For some unknown reason, I've been noticing and including a lot of cat photos by red objects this week, we we are in sync!) --Rosiestep (talk) 17:00, 20 March 2024 (UTC)
Thank you - next day, around Porto da Cruz, with the 2 or 3 cats, - on Bach's birthday --Gerda Arendt (talk) 21:27, 21 March 2024 (UTC)
ps: the wine I ordered was a Rauenthaler Steinmächer, a dry Riesling, their No. 1 meaning the simplest one. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 21:32, 21 March 2024 (UTC)
Gerda Arendt, I will order it! BTW, love your photos -- again. I have plans for 2 of them over the weekend; keep an eye on things around here. ;) --Rosiestep (talk) 14:34, 22 March 2024 (UTC)
thank you ;) - I uploaded 18 more pics from the next day, with a cat, - forgot that I'll have to make the selection for the rest which is the most difficult thing --Gerda Arendt (talk) 15:39, 22 March 2024 (UTC)
a few new pics, and two people for DYK --Gerda Arendt (talk) 21:34, 26 March 2024 (UTC)
Lovely photos, Gerda. Maybe someday our travels will cross and we'll have just enough time for a cup of coffee at a little outdoor cafe like this. What interesting stories we might share, including DYKs, past and present. Rosiestep (talk) 13:30, 27 March 2024 (UTC)
That would be lovely! - hint, hint: probably the same places in January and March, no idea abot that roadside cafe though - 5 hours stopover is to long to do nothing and to short to do something and tiring both ways. (The more convenient flight was cancelled.) - Also: vacation is real when I don't think and talk of DYK ;) - A few pics added to the same day: a calf in the mist and chocolate cake, and a story of collaboration --Gerda Arendt (talk) 20:54, 27 March 2024 (UTC)
A new day of pics, with a goat, and two cats, both pictured twice, especially for you! --Gerda Arendt (talk) 22:54, 28 March 2024 (UTC)
So nice of you to do that. Thanks, Gerda Arendt. Hope you have a nice weekend. --Rosiestep (talk) 13:31, 29 March 2024 (UTC)
Thanks for today's cat - I almost knew that you would take that one! - Today a bird. - I listen to Bach's St John Passion today, - 300 years after it was first performed. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 20:14, 29 March 2024 (UTC)
I do like birds; one of the great joys in life in my life is to awaken to the sound of chirping birds. As for cats, yes, I have a fondness for orange ones... possibly because my first childhood cat was orange. Listened -- quite beautiful; thank you. Happy Easter, Gerda! --Rosiestep (talk) 17:26, 30 March 2024 (UTC)

Acknowledging translation of page from German Wikipedia

I am working on a page on John Toner (see [1]). I started from the German page, translated it using Google translation, and then edited it adding additional information and rephrasing some of the translated page. How do I properly acknowledge the fact I started with a translation of the German page? Mvitulli (talk) 22:38, 19 March 2024 (UTC)

Hi Mvitulli, and thanks for stopping by. I am glad to know that you are translating from one language Wikipedia into EN-WP. There are so many articles that would qualify for that work, and I find it to be so rewarding.
 • I'll start with a friendly reminder that the translated article needs to meet the policies of EN-WP, e.g., WP:N, WP:RS, and so forth. So, regarding the John Joseph Toner biography in your sandbox5, I noticed that a couple of paragraphs don't have inline citations. Theoretically, someone might want to delete them for that reason. Best practice is for the translator to find reliable sources to support the unsourced content when doing a translation; OR, don't include the unsourced paragraph on EN-WP.
 • With each edit you save, the edit summary should be in accordance with: Help:Translation. This is to say that, in the example of Mr. Toner, each save that includes translation would have the following edit summary: Content in this edit is translated from the existing German Wikipedia article at de:John Toner (Physiker); see its history for attribution..
 • On Mr. Toner's talkpage, you would add, underneath the WikiProjects: de
In 2023, I did a lot of translations from FR-WP and ES-WP (you can view them on my list of articles created in 2023). By way of example, see Fanny Clar; that article's Edit Summaries are viewable here and its talkpage translation note is viewable here. Hope all of this is clear and helpful, but I'd be happy to answer other questions if you wish. --Rosiestep (talk) 00:32, 20 March 2024 (UTC)
I provided similar explanations on MLG's talk page. As it looks to me as if the draft is ready for mainspace, I have suggested that the move would be a good opportunity to mention the translation in the edit comment. But as you suggest, it would be useful to add citations to the paragraphs in question, e.g. using this APS source. It seems to me that some of the sources already included could also be re-cited in this connection. I would be happy to take care of the move if Mvitulli would like me to do so.--Ipigott (talk) 09:18, 20 March 2024 (UTC)
Thanks, Ipigott. cc: Mvitulli and Megalibrarygirl. --Rosiestep (talk) 15:52, 20 March 2024 (UTC)
Thank you both, Rosiestep and Ipigott! I knew you would know exactly what to do. :) Megalibrarygirl (talk) 18:05, 20 March 2024 (UTC)
I am ready to publish the page for John Toner. I should have acknowledged the translation from the German page right from the beginning but I didn't know how. I have another dilemma or two. I don't remember how to disambiguate a person's name. My sandbox5 originally contained the draft of the article for Paul Grobstein. I deleted the content of that page and started the page for John Toner. So the history contains all the edits I made on the Grobstein page. I would like to just copy the source for the page for Toner into a new page and acknowledge the translation from the beginning. But this version of the page greatly differs from the original German page. Advice? Mvitulli (talk) 20:38, 20 March 2024 (UTC)
Mvitulli, hmm. I understand the dilemma regarding the Grobstein edits in User:Mvitulli/sandbox5 which predate the Toner edits, and that you want the move to John Toner (physicist) to only reflect the Toner edits. Give me a minute to think on it. Also, other admins may weigh in on this. A good learning moment in multiple ways.
Also, a friendly FYI: the DE-WP article you translated from is this de:John Toner (Physiker) and not this de:John Joseph Toner. --Rosiestep (talk) 21:37, 20 March 2024 (UTC)
Drmies and CambridgeBayWeather: as you've been admins longer than me, wondering if you have suggestions regarding the best way of handling this move? Thanks. --Rosiestep (talk) 21:37, 20 March 2024 (UTC)
Thanks for heads up on correct title of German page. I will wait until I have a better description of Toner's research with reliable references before I publish. Please don't move the page for me. I'm not ready but I'll take whatever advice is offered. Mvitulli (talk) 22:53, 20 March 2024 (UTC)
You want the second stage of the sandbox to "become" the new article? I suppose we could delete the whole thing, restore the Grobstein edits, merge those into the Grobstein article, then restore the other edits, than move that to the new Toner article--but I wonder if that's worth it--to remove a few draft edits from a history? Or move the whole thing when it's done and then just delete the first couple edits and just leave them in the black hole? Perhaps CambridgeBayWeather has a better idea. In general, and for future reference, it's so much easier to call a draft "Paul Grobstein" instead of "sandbox 5", and when you're done, just move the whole thing. Drmies (talk) 02:58, 21 March 2024 (UTC)
Mvitulli, don't worry; we won't do anything but carry on a discussion here. Drmies, as usual, thank you. --Rosiestep (talk) 03:48, 21 March 2024 (UTC)
For what it's worth (as a contributor without admin status or experience), I would simply suggest that when the article is moved to mainspace, the edit comment should read: "This article has been based on translations of the German article John Toner (Physiker) over the past two years." Further explanations could then be given on the talk page (perhaps with a link to these discussions). That would prevent any deletion of content and would cover any remaining attribution problems, Almost every day I come across translations of articles from other language versions of Wikipedia without any reference to translation at the time of creation. Although I constantly draw attention to the need to follow requirements, many of them exist for months or years without any further action. Recognition of drawing on the German Toner article along the lines I suggest should be quite sufficient.--Ipigott (talk) 06:46, 21 March 2024 (UTC)

Delete all revisions before this using "Attribution and translation acknowledgement. Will restore shortly" as the reason. Then move the sandbox to Draft:John Toner (physicist) with "Translated from the German version :de:John Toner (Physiker)] vis Google Traslate and later updated. After the move restore th Paul Grobstein edits of the sandbox. Should work. If necessary apologise (apologize). Ipigott, Drmies, Mvitulli. CambridgeBayWeather (solidly non-human), Uqaqtuq (talk), Huliva 15:29, 21 March 2024 (UTC)

CambridgeBayWeather, ditto, as usual, thank you! --Rosiestep (talk) 18:32, 21 March 2024 (UTC)
Thanks everyone. I moved (copied and pasted) the article from my Sandbox5 to Draft:John Toner (physicist). After making more corrections and adding references I moved the article to the mainspace. I'm not sure how to delete all revisions before I starting working on John Toner in my Sandbox5. I don't need to keep any of the work on Paul Grobstein in my Sandbox5 because the article on Grobstein was published quite a while ago. Is there a way to delete a sandbox or would you advise against that? I have other sandboxes that I no longer need because I moved the article to the mainspace or copied and pasted what was in the sandbox to a new page in the mainspace. I never knew how to deal with the old sandboxes. Advice? Mvitulli (talk) 20:48, 21 March 2024 (UTC)
Mvitulli, first, thanks for writing the article! I see it here: John Toner (physicist). Unfortunately, a cut/paste is not the correct process as the outcome lacks the edit history left behind here: User:Mvitulli/sandbox5. The correct process is to move the article. I think as long as you don't delete sandbox5 (okay to delete the contents and leave a simple statement that it contains the edit history regarding Grobstin and Toner), it'll be okay in case).
Sandbox: Regarding new articles started in sandbox, a good naming convention is this: subject's name, e.g. Doe Poe (pianist) or even User:Mvitulli/JDP.
Thanks for what you do around here; appreciate it. And don't worry if you don't know all the policies, processes, tips and tricks; no one knows all of them. So helping each other is our thing. ;) --Rosiestep (talk) 23:53, 21 March 2024 (UTC)

Ethics Workshop Participation Request

Hi! We're conducting a series of participatory workshops with Wikipedia editors, administrators, researchers, and Wikimedia employees to discuss, and hopefully improve, Wikipedia's structures for online research (see meta research page). In an effort to get the right people in the room to discuss these topics, I'm reaching out here to see if you are interested in participating as an active administrator. We'd work with you to ensure this workshop can fit into your schedule, but are targeting end of April/early May. I'm happy to discuss any of these topics further here or on our talk page. Zentavious (talk) 17:12, 27 March 2024 (UTC)

Hi, guessing you're probably on the other side of the world and super busy with some wiki event, but if you feel like it, see if you can find more on it in the newspaper resources. Remembering that we did the Waldorf stuff together and the hotel was opposite it. No worries if busy! ♦ Dr. Blofeld 14:25, 28 March 2024 (UTC)

Hi, Dr. Blofeld. I remember working on the Waldorf with you; that was a fun project. I looked at newspapers.com for Belmont Plaza Hotel and also Glass Hat Club, but all that I found were mentions of people who had frequented one or the other, vs. articles about them. :( Nonetheless, glad that you created it and would be happy to work on other defunct NY hotels. --Rosiestep (talk) 22:30, 28 March 2024 (UTC)
Yeah, for some reason I could only find scraps too. It wasn't as big as Copacabana or something, but was certainly a notable nightspot in its heyday! ♦ Dr. Blofeld 12:01, 29 March 2024 (UTC)
Certainly seemed so, Dr. Blofeld. Hope you have a nice weekend. --Rosiestep (talk) 13:31, 29 March 2024 (UTC)
