King names

Hi, Ryuch. Thanks a lot for all the work you've been doing, especially on Baekje.  :-)

As far as the king names go, I think you're basically right: simpler is better. I've just been following the standards at Wikipedia:Naming_conventions_(Korean), which were put up by User:Sewing. These standards state that the format should be King X of Y, where X is the ruler's name and Y is the kingdom's name. There hasn't been any discussion of these conventions that I can find.

The current Korean standards do follow Wikipedia:Naming_conventions_(monarchs)#Monarchical_titles, which say that we should "pre-emptively disambiguate" the monarch's name by adding the name of the country. This makes sense in Europe, where you have King Charles of Spain, King Charles of England, etc. etc. But as you say, it isn't really necessary in the Korean context, where only a few names (Taejo, Taejong) have been held by more than one person.

I think we could make this change. Here's what I reckon we should do: 1. Start a discussion in Wikipedia talk:Naming conventions (Korean), to make sure there are no objections. Also mention it on Wikipedia talk:Naming conventions (monarchs) 2. If there are no objections, change the text of Naming conventions (Korean). 3. Move all of the articles to their new names (and change their text also). There are currently about 40 articles that would need to move. 4. Change all of the links in Rulers of Korea to the new format, so that anyone who adds a new article will give it the correct name. ... That's a lot of work, but can be done pretty quickly after step 1 (give it a week or two).

I'll go do step 1 shortly. As you say, simpler is better.

I put the image of the Baekje incense burner [1] for a speedy deletion. I did this because even if permission was given by the museum there isn't any proof of that permission and the image has a fair use rationale. This image: [2] has a creative commons license. I visited Booyeo National Museum and got the permission to use in Wikipedia. You could checkt it by asking to the museum. No problem to use in Wikipedia! But, if you have better image which has good quality image of the burner you could replace. You don't need to delete [3] - Ryuch

An image that you uploaded, Image:Daejeonview.jpg, has been listed at Wikipedia:Copyright problems because it is a suspected copyright violation. Please look there if you know that the image is legally usable on Wikipedia (you may have to search for the title of the image to find its entry), and then provide the necessary information there and on its page, if you are interested in it not being deleted. Hi, the article Korean name is undergoing a Featured Article Review right now. As far as I can tell, it's the only Korea-related Featured Article, and I doubt it can survive the way it is now. I noticed you worked on this article before, so I hope you can help now, and maybe continue on to make one or two more Korea-related Featured Articles eventually. Why do you create the task force without discussion?

Suppose that Takeshima/Sea of Japan task force is created after people find your creation of Dokdo/East Sea taskforce? Wikipedia is not a place for political agenda even though the recent news regarding Japanese textbook controversy is a motivation for you to do this. However, as far as I've known, you have NOT participated in the past naming disputes or votes, so I'm wondering why you unilaterally decided to create the task force? Cheol -- You may not have noticed that I relisted the projected move of Eulsa Treaty at WP:Requested moves#Current discussions/August 31. It is only prudent for me to alert all contributors in our discussion about changing the name of this article.

Please consider Talk:Eulsa Treaty#Relisting at WP:Requested moves.

Summarizing the so-called discussion which began at Talk:Eulsa Treaty in early August here:
A. In an attempt to help us start discussion, options were proposed here and refined here.
  1. Leave it at its current name?
  2. To Japan-Korea Protectorate Treaty?
  3. To Japan-Korea Treaty of 1905?
  4. To 1905 Protectorate Treaty?
  5. Or what?; see the second paragraph of page Eulsa Treaty.
B. Valentim presented the results of a Lexis/Nexis search here. This supplements several Google searches.
In the many weeks of so-called discussion thread development, those opposing the move have either been unwilling or unable to present refutation or counterargument; and therefore, I propose we delay no longer.

Notification: changes to "Mark my edits as minor by default" preference

Hello there. This is an automated message to tell you about the gradual phasing out of the preference entitled "Mark all edits minor by default", which you currently have (or very recently had) enabled.

On 13 March 2011, this preference was hidden from the user preferences screen as part of efforts to prevent its accidental misuse (consensus discussion). This had the effect of locking users in to their existing preference, which, in your case, was true. To complete the process, your preference will automatically be changed to false in the next few days. This does not require any intervention on your part and you will still be able to manually mark your edits as being minor in the usual way.

For established users such as yourself there is a workaround available involving custom JavaScript. With the script in place, you can continue with this functionality indefinitely (its use is governed by WP:MINOR). If you have any problems, feel free to drop me a note.

Signpost

Hi Ryuch,

I found the slides of your recent presentation about the Korean Wikipedia quite illuminating. Would you be interested in making them into a "Sister project report" for the Signpost? This is an irregular series that presents the basics of a Wikimedia project, its history, characteristics, successes and issues, and current (longer term importance) developments. Considering the Signpost audience (English Wikipedians and other Wikimedians), one can be brief about basics that are similar to other Wikipedias, but assume some interest for peculiarities that are unique to the project.

(You may have noticed that we ran a story concerning the Korean Wikipedia not long ago - based on a Foundation-l posting by PuzzletChung -, which appears to have gone down quite well with readers. But Sister project reports are intended to take up an entire section and have a larger scope, encompassing the whole project instead of one particular news item.)

If you are interested in presenting your project in such a Signpost report, one way to start would be to begin a draft in your user space. As you may know, the Signpost is published on Mondays. It should be sufficient to have a rough version of the story ready by Sunday early afternoon (UTC) before the intended publication date, to allow for subsequent (copy-)editing.

Hello, HaeB! Thank you for the attention. It's great to publish about Korean Wikipedia on Signpost. I will start to draft a article but I'm not sure I can make it ready for next issue. You mentioned Sister project reports but I am not sure the coverage of Signpost. If it covers only English Wikipedia, you are right it's a Sister project. Great, looking forward to it! Yes, it doesn't need to be ready for the next (March 21) issue - one of the following weeks is fine too. It's just important to leave some time for refining and editing before the intended publication date.
The name "Sister project report" is indeed somewhat a leftover from the time when the Signpost was exclusively covering the English Wikipedia only. In a discussion last year there was consensus to widen the scope to all Wikimedia matters (that's when it was renamed from "Wikipedia Signpost" to "Signpost", to indicate that reporting about Commons and other non-Wikipedia Wikimedia projects is welcome too). But so far we kept the name, also since some sections ("Features and admins", "Arbitration report") still focus on the English Wikipedia.

I pointed out to you an example of an article that ran against the current wording, but in accordance with the previous RFC and the current discussion's general consensus. You went to the page and radically altered the romanization system in use solely in order to make a point about the discussion we were having on the MOS talk page, and in the process you mangled a direct quotation.
Do you understand why this is inappropriate? If not, I will have to consider requesting that you be blocked from editing, as changing direct quotations to conform to (your interpretation of) Wikipedia's MOS, without indicating that the quote was altered, is unacceptable.

All users who registered an account before Saturday, 28 October 2017, made at least 150 mainspace edits before Wednesday, 1 November 2017 and are not currently blocked are eligible to vote.
