Emmy Noether

Hi Scartol, I've only started reading the Emmy Noether article. However, I feel the prose needs to be refreshed. My main concern is that (from my first read) I didn't find the text flowing at all. Maybe the sentences and too long, or too chopped up or sometimes else. I see you have received a few "copyedit" barnstars, so maybe you could try fixing it a bit. I think the fourth paragraph in the lead should be cut by half. I propose (very first draft):

Noether's mathematical work focuses mainly on algebra, and has been divided into three "epochs". In the first epoch (1908–1919), she made important contributions to invariant theory. Most notably, Noether's theorem has been called "one of the most important mathematical theorems ever proved in guiding the development of modern physics".[4] In the second epoch (1920–1926), Noether studied commutative rings, working out the theory of ideals in such rings. In her esteemed classical paper Idealtheorie in Ringbereichen (1921) she gave the first definition of a commutative ring and used ascending chain conditions to prove an analog of the fundamental theorem of arithmetic. In the third epoch (1927–1935), she worked on noncommutative algebras, as well as uniting hypercomplex numbers and the representation theory of groups with the modules and ideals of rings. She is credited with formulating a theory of modules and ideals in rings that satisfy certain finiteness conditions. Noether was generous with her ideas, and is credited with several novel lines of research, even in disparate fields such as algebraic topology.

A reply on Peau de chagrin

Hi Scatrol, regarding your query about the language of the written piece, it is with no doubt Arabic. Also the translation is 90% accurate except in the last two lines. The phrase "So be it" better to replaced with "Amen". Haytham^Abulela 18:36, 1 June 2008 (UTC)

Have to dash, but...

...will keep working. I threw up some notes on the ascending/descending chain conditions here, and I think I've finally gotten a handle on ideals beyond just their formal definitions. I have been learning a lot, and writing up some of it. Could you look at the table of her students and the chain conditions blurb? But everything's quiet at the FAC, and we might be able to coast to that bronze star? Ordinarily I wouldn't take the lazy route, but I also don't want to rock the boat and cause stability concerns by adding a lot of new material and re-organizing things. What do you think? Dude, who hasn't heard of Bill Hicks (RIP) or Mitch Hedberg (RIP again)? Unless of course your head has been dug into the sand for the past three decades or you've been living in a cave. Now, granted I didn't get into Hicks until after he was dead (I actually learned of him through the band Tool quoting him, about '96). I don't know why I didn't mention Hicks or Hedberg on my user page. Just a quick note about Image:Noether.jpg. This site uses the image with permission directly from a Professor Emiliana P. Noether. It looks like she retired some years ago from uconn.edu, but is still a little active (eg. here). I have no idea how copyright works, but is it possible for us to get the same permission? Help with copyedit

Hello Scartol,

from your beautiful writing in Emmy Noether, I know that you are somebody who cares about high-quality prose. May I ask you for the following: as the main contributor of group (mathematics) (and being a non-native speaker), I would like to ask for your help with a copyedit. The article is in preparation for a FAC. It has achieved Good Article status and has also been peer reviewed. Comments from the Peer Review have been covered, so the article should be content-wise pretty stable. I would particularly ask for your help with respect to "beautiful" wording, and good text flow. I'm aware of the fact that there are many word repetitions and similar issues. As a mathematics text, there are some stylistic pecularities, but I wish the text in the end reads very smoothly. Tokyo Mew Mew

Hey. I know you aren't taking any more copyediting requests right now, but I was wondering if you'd be willing to check behind someone else's copyedits to review the changes and make sure they are good ones? User:G.A.S is trying his hand at copyediting Tokyo Mew Mew, and User:Mizu onna sango15 agreed to follow behind to check them, as G.A.S. is new to it. However, Mizu hasn't been following behind after the first bit, and I'm a little concerned that G.A.S. needs some guidance and that some of his changes are not quite aiding the prose. Congrats! I guess my help was not needed for the FA. There are some things and references I'd still like to add, but I can now do so leisurely. Apropos JH's remark above, modern math, especially abstract algebra, especially non-commutative rings, especially their classification theorems are notoriously difficult to explain to the lay person! (Actually, they are difficult to explain to mathematicians in other sub-fields.) I wish I had known about the FA review earlier, but, in any case, you're over the hump now. That's not true; where would we've been without our mathematician friends like Ozob, User:R.e.b., David Eppstein, Jakob.scholbach and probably fifty others? In this story, we saved each other. :) I hope that we'll all keep working together to make Emmy and related articles in abstract algebra even more excellent. It's almost like we need to start Wikipedia:WikiProject Emmy Noether just to finish this one article. :-) I've enjoyed learning and writing about Emmy, but I wouldn't have gotten anywhere and wouldn't even have attempted to without the support and encouragement of everyone else, especially Scartol and Willow. And Willow, you deserve more credit than you give yourself for the mathematical parts of the article. That stuff is hard, but almost all of it is yours or based on your work. You should be proud! Just kidding. ;) It was fun, and it was a great chance for me to learn tons of new math! :) I'm still agog at how much math got done in the 19th century; I suppose since it took them a century to do it, I shouldn't be vexed for not being able to learn it all in a few weeks. ;) I'll keep adding bits and pieces to Emmy's article over time, since I do think we left off some minor points, such as her admiration for the works of Richard Dedekind and more about central simple algebras. I think there might also be a connection between her work and the solution of Fermat's last theorem by Andrew Wiles?

I've been having a fun time the past few days; my oldest niece came for a visit! I've been trying to teach her to knit for almost as long as I've been at Wikipedia, but she's still too young, it seems. :( But I succeeded in teaching her how to use a sewing machine; she made (with a little help from me) a brilliant orange polka-dotted purse with blue trim, hot pink straps, and a big Kermit-green patch-pocket. It was glorious and she thought so, too. :)

Ooh yes there is a connection. I happen to know this as the only reason I'd ever heard of Galois groups was because I read the book Fermat's Enigma by Simon Singh a number of years ago. It's very readable, very interesting, not too technical and not too long as I recall. Call your attention to something

If it is possible, I would like your opinion located here. It is about developing school & town-related CD-ROMs to send to schools to give students a better idea of what they should know. Well, the finished product would be CD-ROMs grouping of about 12-20 articles detailing the area they live in sent to schools in the area. template coding help

Hey Scartol,

I picked your name at random off of the coders page (no offence, but I didn't see a better way...).  :-) a question, if you can help. I made a template for another user - {{pictify}} - and it all works well except for one sticky problem. I wanted the wikipedia link to automatically search for pictures listed in the 'type' parameter, but I can't seem to get the template to turn off searches in article mainspace, so it tends to go straight to any article about the picture subject, rather than the search of pictures that I want. can you figure out what's going wrong?
