Categories

Hello! Category:People from Königsberg is for people from the city from 1255-1945, regardless of administrative unit. Category:People from East Prussia is for people from the Province of East Prussia, as opposed to Königsbergers from the Province of Prussia, or Ducal Prussia, or the Ordensland, etc. Similarly, Hanoverians can be divided amongst people from the Electorate of Hanover, the Kingdom of Hanover, the Province of Hanover, etc. Olessi (talk) 04:43, 3 February 2008 (UTC)

Barnstar

The New Zealand Barnstar of National Merit
I, Taifarious1, hereby award you this New Zealand barnstar of national merit for your contributions to various New Zealand-related articles and to acknowledge your involvement in the creation of WikiProject New Zealand. Good Job Mate. Taifarious1 02:00, 16 February 2008 (UTC)

Rollback

Would you like to have rollback? It's more efficient for some anti-vandalism purposes than the javascript tools such as Twinkle.-gadfium 07:41, 10 March 2008 (UTC)

ok, I'll give it a try. - SimonLyall (talk) 11:10, 10 March 2008 (UTC)

List of companies of...renaming

You may or may not have noticed that List of companies in the United Arab Emirates is up for Afd. Just one of many of these lists which have been put up for Afd. I made the changes firstly by following WP:BOLD, because of the following reasons:

  • The country specific category which these lists belong to is Category:Companies of country, not Category:Countryian companies (e.g. Category:New Zealand companies or Category:Barbudian companies)
  • Using titles such as Barbudian companies and the like present problems, as if someone is searching for the list of companies from Barbados, they are more likely to search for the country name rather than the descriptive. It also presents the problem of companies from Dominica and the Dominican Republic, both could be titled List of Dominican' companies. If people are not familiar with the descriptor for a country, it is going to make it harder to find and to categorise (wasting time looking), whereas what I have changed it to makes it so much easier.
  • Using the word "of" denotes that these lists are for companies OF the country concerned.

I see you have put a notice on WP:ANB and will be posting this info there too. Feel free to contact me again on my talk page. --Russavia (talk) 07:27, 13 March 2008 (UTC)

Tuheitia Paki

Hello Simon! How are you? Um, you recently changed my correction to the article. There isn't any web page that sources the info. I got the information from the Ministry of Culture and Heritage of New Zealand. How can I source the article when my info comes from an email? If you would like to, you may see the email. I just need your email. Rbkl (talk) 14:28, 12 May 2008 (UTC)

The source really needs to be public so other people can independantly check it. There is a recent question on Wikipedia:Reliable_sources/Noticeboard#Email_from_an_official_source where the answer is :
No, personal emails are not absolutely NOT reliable. What's more it would be a WP:No original research violation to add information gathered from such a source to an article. Blueboar (talk) 17:29, 1 April 2008 (UTC)
Agree with Blueboar. You can ask the country reps. if the they can point you to published documents (press releases, quotes in newspapers etc) where they have stated their position in the Kosovo situation, and cite those published documents; but you certainly cannot cite any personal communication. Abecedare (talk) 17:42, 1 April 2008 (UTC)

So it looks like you need to get the ministry to publish something or perhaps allow you to publish their email. - SimonLyall (talk) 12:02, 13 May 2008 (UTC)

About the recent deletion of a section in Talk:USB_flash_drive?

You deleted my question "How to disable last access times on FAT in Windows?" in Talk:USB_flash_drive with argument "This page is for discussion of the article not general questions about drives, sorry". But the section "What causes flash memory to wear out?" is not deleted. If I rephrase my questions so that the answers can be directly added to the article, will that be OK? For example "How can flash memories be protected from additional wear caused by time stamping?", "How can it be determined whether the microcontroller of a particular drive supports wear leveling"? Excuse me for the poor English and the bothering --Lefter 12:10, 3 June 2008 (UTC)

Your deletion of web applications section in USB flash drive

I think that information about running web applications and web servers from a USB drive is useful and relevant information. Rather than just removing it, if you think mail servers are important then add them too. This topic is now open for discussion on the article talk page. I think it s better to have a discussion than immediately reverting content. Peter Campbell 13:27, 8 June 2008 (UTC)

Living people

You raised an issue about category living people. I passed it on at Wikipedia_talk:AutoWikiBrowser#Category:_living_people. Did you see the reply? Lightmouse (talk) 09:04, 14 August 2008 (UTC)

yes. makes sense. I'll have a think about it for the Jim Gray article. - SimonLyall (talk) 11:34, 14 August 2008 (UTC)

no your wrong, help me put the pictures in a better order. how do you edit the box with the pictures so that it comes out in the right order?

Don't bother, you've got about 5 more minutes before somebody comes along and reverses every change you have made ( that Ihave not already) . Thats the way it works sorry. Replacing other people's pictures with Barrack Obama's picture isn't something that will stay around for long - SimonLyall (talk) 06:16, 27 August 2008 (UTC)

thats bs. this is my wikipedia too, i want to change the box so all six pictures line in a better order, if you cant help then learn to at least decent to the other editor. i am trying to figure out how to do it and i guess you dont know about it good enouph to help

Why don't you ask for help on Wikipedia talk:WikiProject African diaspora . And it's no BS. This is what you did to the Edward Broke article. Recognize the photo?. Oh and the answer to your question the photo is one big image so you have to create a new image and change the template to point to that. - SimonLyall (talk) 06:25, 27 August 2008 (UTC)

yea i know but i am trying to do that. anyway thx for answering my question? Awdacityofluv (talk) 06:31, 27 August 2008 (UTC)

yea I was trying to move the one into box 1 and the File:WEB DuBois.jpg one into box 3 so the one can be in box 1 since he is more in the news now.

DriveSentry encryption and antivirus edits to the USB Flash Drive page

oops, yes my edit may have been a little blunt, but I see the other free products that I though I could add text on the end of, survived the edit. how is this? Mike A Quinn (talk) 17:35, 15 October 2008 (UTC)

I was not talking about the bluntness of you edits. more the fact that you are an employee of DriveSentry and are the main author of the article on it. - SimonLyall (talk) 10:12, 16 October 2008 (UTC)

Removing maintenance tags

in the future please don't remove maintenance tags without actually ensuring they've been addressed. Simply referencing a 3 year old thread on the talk page which doesn't address the issue doesn't quality as fixing the problem. A google search isn't a reliable source because 1) its meaningless, and 2) you have to commit original research by interpreting the results as being notable based on a number of google hits. You need an article from a news paper, magazine, or some other reliable source which uses each term. Any terms that can't be sourced should be removed.--Crossmr (talk) 11:11, 20 October 2008 (UTC)

Please see Wikipedia:Search engine test for some details. We are referencing a slang term here ( although it's not obvious which term you are talking about since you just put OR at the end of the sentence) so the google search is enough to establish common usage. If you wish to discuss further do so on the article talk page. - SimonLyall (talk) 09:22, 21 October 2008 (UTC)
yes, please read it Wikipedia:Search_engine_test#Verifiability specifically that section.I'm tagging ALL slang terms as OR unless you can provide a source which meets WP:V and WP:RS which you have not. Using the google search results satisfies neither WP:V, WP:NPOV or WP:N to demonstrate any of those terms are reliable or notable. Once again you might want to verify that what you're linking to actually solves the issue before you remove the maintenance tag. Edit warring of maintenance tags is disruptive and I will kindly ask you to stop removing it until you provide the appropriate sources. Also have a look under what search engine tests can't do: Wikipedia:Search_engine_test#What_a_search_test_can_do.2C_and_what_it_can.27t Specifically it can't provide reliable results, nor can it provide results as to why term x got a certain number of hits. If you're returning any reliable sources cite them. A few people throwing around a phrase in a forum and that forum generating lots of pages (depending on how its indexed, I've seen forums generate a hit for every post in a thread) does nothing to establish whether or not the slang term is real, notable, reliable, etc.--Crossmr (talk) 16:47, 21 October 2008 (UTC)
Could you please be explicit on what you are tagging. All the slang terms or just some? - SimonLyall (talk) 19:33, 21 October 2008 (UTC)
I just did above I'm tagging ALL slang terms as OR . Any that you can't provide reliable sources for need to be removed as either original research, or violations of NPOV under undue weight. Currently there is no evidence beyond an editor heard someone use one of those terms so they added it to the article. Usage in a reliable source would prove that 1) its a real slang term, and 2) its not just a term used in some small regional area that isn't notable outside a small community or number of people.--Crossmr (talk) 01:13, 22 October 2008 (UTC)
Ok, I'll get some refs for usage of the term. Klick is in various military books and Kays/K's pops up on various sites. A couple of references do or you want several to show each is widespread? - SimonLyall (talk) 10:04, 22 October 2008 (UTC)
As long as they're reliable sources, yes. Forums, blogs, self-published sites, etc. Preferable sources to show "widespread" would be something like national newspapers, magazines, and things like that. Official military sources would be fine for klicks.--Crossmr (talk) 15:06, 22 October 2008 (UTC)
