I incorporated major changes and a lot of addition to the Midnapore stub. But most of my input was from memory. So it will be great if people living in Midnapur / having good knowledge of the town's history and culture would enrich the stub. Also, I could mention only a few of the multitude of academic institutes. The details of the mentioned ones, as well as the omitted ones need to be added.--Srays 11:17, 17 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Midnapore Collegiate School

[edit]

Midnapore Collegiate School is one of the oldest schools in Bengal as well as India. Apart from its contribution in Indian Freedom Movement, it has consistently good records in academics.

It was established in 1834 with the funding from local citizens. Initially it was known as Midnapore Zilla School. Among its students were the renowned novelist Bankim Chandra ChattoPadhyay, the martyre Khudiram Bose and film director Ritwik Ghatak. Popular writer Manik Bandyopadhyay also studied in this school.

Among its teachers were Rishi Rajnarayan Bose, a luminary of the Brahmo Samaj movement and Hemchandra Kanungo, a revolutionary.

The school has around 1200 students and about 50 teachers. A very old baniyan tree in the campus is the current logo. It is a higher secondary boys' school and all standards from V to XII are taught. In the X+2 level, Science, Arts and Commerce are the subjects taught.

I am not sure if the above is worth a stub in the wiki. Regarding its historical importance, it is! But regarding its current importance, it's not!! --Srays 12:50, 17 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi please check Midnapore now.

[edit]

Hi... I am from Midnapore too. I rewrote the entire article, expanding it greatly. Let me know what you think. I'm also working on Contai, Digha, Kharagpur, Dantan, Jhargram, Tenida, Byomkesh Bakshi and other topics related to Bengal. --Antorjal 01:57, 23 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
