WikiCup 2014 August newsletter

The final of the 2014 WikiCup begins in a few short minutes! Our eight finalists are listed below, along with their placement in Round 4:

  1. Smithsonian Institution Godot13 (submissions), a WikiCup newcomer, finished top of Pool A and was the round's highest scorer. Godot is a featured picture specialist, claiming large numbers of points due to high-quality scans of historical documents, especially banknotes.
  2. Scotland Casliber (submissions) is a WikiCup veteran, having been a finalist every year since 2010. In the semi-final, he was Pool B's highest scorer. Cas's points primarily come from articles on the natural sciences.
  3. Nepal Czar (submissions) was Pool A's runner-up. Czar's points come mostly from content related to independent video games, including both articles and topics.
  4. Oh, better far to live and die / Under the brave black flag I fly... Adam Cuerden (submissions) was Pool B's runner-up. Another featured picture specialist, many of Adam's points come from the restoration of historical media. He has been a WikiCup finalist twice before.
  5. Wales Cwmhiraeth (submissions) won the WikiCup in 2012 and 2013, and enters this final as the first wildcard. She focuses on biology-related articles, and has worked on several high-importance articles.
  6. Florida 12george1 (submissions) is the second wildcard. George's points come primarily from meteorology-related articles. This year and last year, George was the first person in the competition to score.
  7. Colorado Sturmvogel 66 (submissions), the third wildcard, was the 2010 champion and a finalist last year. His writes mostly on military history, especially naval history.
  8. Canada Bloom6132 (submissions), the fourth and final wildcard, has participated in previous WikiCups, but not reached any finals. Bloom's points are mostly thanks to did you knows, featured lists and good articles related to sport and national symbols.

We say goodbye to this year's semi-finalists. Herm Matty.007 (submissions), Ohio ThaddeusB (submissions), United States WikiRedactor (submissions), Idaho Figureskatingfan (submissions), Greece Yellow Evan (submissions), Portugal Prism (submissions) and Bartošovice v Orlických horách Cloudz679 (submissions) have all performed well to reach this stage of the competition, and we hope they will all be joining us again next year.

There are two upcoming competitions unrelated to the WikiCup which may be of interest to those who receive this newsletter. The Stub Contest will run through September, and revolves around expanding stub articles, especially high-importance or old stubs. In addition, a proposal has been made for a new competition, the GA Cup, which the organisers plan to run next year. This competition is based on the WikiCup and aims to reduce the good article review backlog.

There is now a thread for brainstorming on how next year's WikiCup competition should work. Please come along and share your thoughts- What works? What doesn't work? What needs changing? Signups for next year's competition will be open soon; we will be in touch. If, at this stage of the competition, you are keen to help the with the WikiCup, please do what you can to participate in review processes. Our finalists will find things much easier if the backlogs at good article candidates, featured article candidates, featured picture candidates and the rest are kept at a minimum. As ever, questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! Speedy deletion declined: English English English

Hello Thine Antique Pen. I am just letting you know that I declined the speedy deletion of English English English, a page you tagged for speedy deletion, because of the following concern: TV shows are not eligible for A7. Try PROD or AFD instead. Thank you. §FreeRangeFrogcroak 01:15, 30 September 2014 (UTC)

Hm. I might go to AFD. I can find barely any sources regarding the program, even before considering reliability. Thine Antique Pen (talk) 08:39, 30 September 2014 (UTC)

WikiCup 2014 September newsletter

In one month's time, we will know our WikiCup 2014 champion. Newcomer Smithsonian Institution Godot13 (submissions) has taken a strong lead with a featured list (historical coats of arms of the U.S. states from 1876) and a raft of featured pictures. Reigning champion Wales Cwmhiraeth (submissions) is in second place with a number of high-importance biology articles, including new FA Isopoda and new GA least weasel. Scotland Casliber (submissions), who is in his fifth WikiCup final, is in third, with featured articles Pictor and Epacris impressa.

Signups for the 2015 WikiCup are open. All Wikipedians, new and experienced, are warmly invited to sign up for the competition. Wikipedians interested in friendly competition may also like to sign up for the GA Cup, a new WikiCup-inspired competition which revolves around completing good article reviews. As ever, questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! Hi. I hope this is the right place for this discussion. I have accidentally removed your deletion request from the page English English English. Should I reintroduce it? I should point out that I would politely like to contest it. I plan on addressing any content issues and bring this entry up to Wikipedia standards. Thanks. Thank you for creating all the Megachile stubs! I suppose you got an approved bot doing the work. I'm going to have another bot sort the category entries with appropriate keys like [[Category:Megachile|Mucida]] because currently almost all your 1500 articles are sorted by the genus name which makes navigating the category a bit complicated. Hi Thine Antique Pen. Please take this as confirmation that your editing restriction - that you may not request additional user-rights without checking my opinion - has now been removed. You are free to request any user-rights you feel appropriate. Looking at the history, by my reckoning, you've been free to do so for quite a while - the restriction was only for a year. That said, I am also of the opinion that you've been no trouble in the meantime and I also wish to congratulate you for that. Best WormTT(talk) 14:17, 4 November 2014 (UTC)

WikiCup 2014: The results

The 2014 WikiCup champion is Smithsonian Institution Godot13 (submissions), who flew the flag of the Smithsonian Institution. This was Godot13's first WikiCup competition and, over the 10 months of the competition, he has produced (among other contributions) two featured lists and an incredible 292 featured pictures, including architectural photographs and scans of historical documents. Wales Cwmhiraeth (submissions), 2012 and 2013 WikiCup champion, came in second, having written a large number of biology-related articles. Scotland Casliber (submissions), WikiCup finalist every year since 2010, finished in third.

A full list of our prize-winners follows:

Congratulations to everyone who has been successful in this year's WikiCup, whether you made it to the final rounds or not, and a particular congratulations to the newcomers to the WikiCup who have participated this year. We warmly invite all of you to sign up for next year's competition. Discussions and polls concerning potential rules changes are also open, and all are welcome to participate. The WikiCup judges will be back in touch over the coming months, and we hope to see you all in the 2014 competition. Until then, it only remains to once again congratulate our worthy winners, and thank all participants for their involvement! Hello Thine Antique Pen,
I just wanted to let you know that I've finished copyediting Bombardment of Salé, an article you listed on the GOCE requests page. Comments are appreciated. Regards, --Biblioworm 03:35, 29 November 2014 (UTC)

Thanks. I'd generally recommend to keep the date formats the same, so have changed them back to the British format. Thine Antique Pen (talk) 09:57, 29 November 2014 (UTC)
Some were also in American format, and I think the WP:MOS says that any format is okay so long as it is uniform throughout the entire article. I guess I'll just start using the British format when in doubt, though. --Biblioworm 14:28, 29 November 2014 (UTC)
It's generally best to go with the most used format in the article. They were all in British format in the article, until this edit. Hm. Thine Antique Pen (talk) 15:34, 29 November 2014 (UTC)

Mass creation of Carex articles

Can I just ask, what is the purpose of the huge number of Carex articles that you've been creating? I can't see that they're particularly useful to the readership in any way. --Stemonitis (talk) 16:32, 6 December 2014 (UTC)

I've been creating a lot of species articles for a while, and can understand your concerns. I create them simply to add to the encyclopaedia, and they also exist if anyone finds one and wishes to expand one (for example, I've previously expanded species stubs before). Thine Antique Pen (talk) 16:34, 6 December 2014 (UTC)
Actually, could I ask you to stop anyway? There are several problems with the template you're using to mass-create these articles, and it would be much easier to fix them before they get replicated hundreds of times. --Stemonitis (talk) 16:35, 6 December 2014 (UTC)
What issues do you have? I'd be willing to address any problems. Thine Antique Pen (talk) 16:36, 6 December 2014 (UTC)
@Stemonitis: To add, I aim to do the category indexing and add {{hybrid}} into the taxoboxes of hybrids once I've finished creating the articles. Thine Antique Pen (talk) 16:53, 6 December 2014 (UTC)
In my experience, any such mass creation always turns out to be a bad idea. There is a pretty small chance that any of the articles will be improved significantly over the medium-term, and a very high probability that they will become outdated or create cleanup work. Beyond that, they contain exactly no information that isn't already present in the encyclopaedia, at the list of Carex species. I would say that there is a very good chance that they will all be deleted as worthless before very long. WP:REDLINK explains that red links are not a bad thing. WP:CREATE suggests that "If you do not have enough material to write a good stub, you probably should not create the article". Needless to say, you have not created good stubs.
To answer your direct question, there are a number of problems with your template, some of which are quite obvious. Let's take an example, Carex swanii. Quite apart from the fact that it contains no information, you have only done a small part of the work required when creating an article well. (Novice editors might be excused for omitting some of these, but you've been around long enough to edit more responsibly.) Some issues arising in the article itself:
  1. Two blank lines precede a stub tag. This is a well-established convention of layout.
  2. Carex is an enormous genus, and just placing a species in the genus is not enough. You really need to give at least the subgenus, and preferably also the relevant section.
  3. To say "was described by Kenneth Mackenzie" is not at all clear to a reader who doesn't already understand botanical nomenclature. There needs to be an explanation of what it means to "be described by"; anyone can describe a plant, but what you mean here is rather more involved than that.
  4. While were at it, if you're going to say who first described the species, then you ought to say when.
  5. You are citing an out-of-date version of The Plant List.
  6. You cite all these articles to The Plant List, but you don't cite the relevant page. If you were to go to the species page, rather than the genus listing, then there may well be synonyms listed, which should be included. There would also need to be redirects created from those synonyms, where they are not junior homonyms of other valid names.
  7. All the Carex articles you have created are wrongly indexed in Category:Carex. They need to appear in order of the epithet; I watch that category quite carefully, and it had been fine until recently. Now it's a huge mess.
  8. Articles on plants should all have the {{WikiProject Plants}} banner on the talk page, with an honest assessment of the topic's importance and the article's quality. For that, you would need to know the importance of the topic; otherwise, you're expecting a lot of unnecessary work from someone else.
Considering the article only contains 13 words, that's quite a lot to get wrong, and I'm sure that list isn't complete. Like I say, every semi-automated mass creation of articles in the past has created a lot of work and negligible benefit, and the best approach is simply not to do it. If you're going to do it, then for goodness' sake consult in advance on the template you plan to use. Ask for advice at WT:PLANTS, and do so before you begin. I'm already part-way through fixing the problems introduced by another editors overzealous creations, and I haven't got time to fix all the problems that you have created in less than 45 minutes. It is simply not enough to say that you'll come back and fix it all later. --Stemonitis (talk) 17:01, 6 December 2014 (UTC)
More problems! Here, you correctly amended the authority to "(Kük.) Ohwi", but I'm not sure you know what that means. It means that the only direct statement in the article is wrong! The person who first described the species was not Ohwi. I really think it may be best to delete all these substubs immediately. --Stemonitis (talk) 17:05, 6 December 2014 (UTC)
One last thing: WP:MASSCREATION says, quite rightly, that "any large-scale automated or semi-automated article creation task must be approved at Wikipedia:Bots/Requests for approval". That certainly applies in this case, even though you're not running a bot; your edits are by their nature "semi-automated". --Stemonitis (talk) 17:13, 6 December 2014 (UTC)
I'm going to work on all of them.
  1. Will change the spacing
  2. The source does not list any subgenus, in the examples I have seen
  3. What would you recommend for that?
  4. The list on the source doesn't appear to show the date
  5. Shall change to this
  6. I'll think about that one, but the other work is my main priority
  7. Like I said above, I shall fix the categories
  8. I'd generally regard them as low-class stub articles. Would you object to that?
With your more problems, I think that there was only an example of that in a few articles. I think that it would be a poor idea to delete them, given how I'm willing to fix some of these problems (despite some of them not being problems, just what you'd like, such as synonyms). None of the articles were created using automated or semi-automated methods (which I regard as using a tool like AWB), so do not come under WP:MASSCREATION in the bot policy. Once you answer a couple of the questions I've added above, I'll begin work. Thine Antique Pen (talk) 17:18, 6 December 2014 (UTC)
No, your edits are definitely "semi-automated", and must not continue without community approval. The whole project needs to be discussed much more widely before any further edits are made. The fact that you don't regard approval to be necessary doesn't change the fact that the rest of the community does. --Stemonitis (talk) 17:24, 6 December 2014 (UTC)
I'd regard semi-automated as the usage of tools such as these, but shall not discuss further on that. My current plans would be to fix the stubs, but would want you to answer the questions above. Thine Antique Pen (talk) 17:27, 6 December 2014 (UTC)
Yes, other tools also count as semi-automated editing, but that doesn't change anything here. Saying you "will not discuss further" is not an appropriate attitude. Everything on Wikipedia is subject to community approval, and nothing is above that process. This is a very important point. The sort of edits you have been making require community approval. A large article creation project should be discussed in advance with relevant WikiProjects. It would not be enough for me to give answers to a few of your questions; other people may well find other things that need changing in your approach, and neither of us can predict what they might be. This has to be discussed and agreed before there can be any resumption of article creation. --Stemonitis (talk) 17:34, 6 December 2014 (UTC)
For now, I don't plan to resume creating these stubs, and would make sure that I'd ask WikiProject Plants in the future. I intend to fix them, but don't know how you would recommend explaining "described by". I've attempted to make some initial changes to Carex acicularis. Thine Antique Pen (talk) 17:41, 6 December 2014 (UTC)
Carex acicularis is a synonym of another species, according to most relevant authorities. --Stemonitis (talk) 17:52, 6 December 2014 (UTC)
Which species? The Plant List does not state that. Thine Antique Pen (talk) 17:55, 6 December 2014 (UTC)
This is indicative of the problems your hasty approach is bound to suffer from. A single source is not really enough to base an article on, especially when you're dealing with a single item on a long list. That species is Australian, and most Australian references treat C. acicularis as a synonym of C. archeri. There will always be contradictions that can only be accommodated by weighing up the evidence either way and describing it dispassionately. As WP:CREATE explains, one must always gather references before creating an article. --Stemonitis (talk) 18:33, 6 December 2014 (UTC)

Basically what he's trying to say, if you're not a member of the plant project with significant expertise to write featured quality articles you're not welcome.. ;-) Seriously though, short stubs on plants are not really worth it, they rarely get improved. It's one of those topics which just sadly don't have the editors we really need to ensure quality on a wide scale. I'd rather see a GA on a genus. The number of articles the plants project have as GAs is extremely low. The plants project already have a massive log of articles needing very basic improvement. Honestly if you're going to create plant stubs I think generally it's best a bot did it with some solid info and had a faster rate.♦ Dr. Blofeld 18:58, 6 December 2014 (UTC)

Thank you Ernst, that is an interesting alternative. It's good having an evil genius stalking my talk page! I shall look into the possibility of bot approval for creation of these stubs. On the wider issue, it would have been far more beneficial for me to have discussed the creation of these stubs at the WikiProject first, and I will make sure to do so with any future species stub creations. As for more lengthy articles, I have plenty of those on the go too, as you know. Thine Antique Pen (talk) 17:47, 7 December 2014 (UTC)

WikiCup 2015 is just around the corner...

Hello everyone, and may we wish you all a happy holiday season. As you will probably already know, the 2015 WikiCup begins in the new year; there is still time to sign up. We have a few important announcements concerning the future of the WikiCup.

  • We would like to announce that Josh (J Milburn) and Ed (The ed17), who have been WikiCup judges since 2009 and 2010 respectively, are stepping down. This decision has been made for a number of reasons, but the main one is time. Both Josh and Ed have found that, over the previous year, they have been unable to devote the time necessary to the WikiCup, and it is not likely that they will be able to do this in the near future. Furthermore, new people at the helm can only help to invigorate the WikiCup and keep it dynamic. Josh and Ed will still be around, and will likely be participating in the Cup this following year as competitors, which is where both started out.
  • In a similar vein, we hope you will all join us in welcoming Jason (Sturmvogel 66) and Christine (Figureskatingfan), who are joining Brian (Miyagawa) to form the 2015 WikiCup judging team. Jason is a WikiCup veteran, having won in 2010 and finishing in fifth this year. Christine has participated in two WikiCups, reaching the semi-finals in both, and is responsible for the GA Cup, which she now co-runs.
  • The discussions/polls concerning the next competition's rules will be closed soon, and rules changes will be made clear on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Scoring and talk pages. Hi. Would you kindly explain to me when a QPQ review is necessary for DYK nominations? --Earthh (talk) 13:24, 16 December 2014 (UTC)

Simply, a QPQ is required in all cases where the nominator has more than five DYK credits. Thine Antique Pen (talk) 21:01, 16 December 2014 (UTC)
Thank you :) --Earthh (talk) 21:21, 16 December 2014 (UTC)

DYK for Marriage Charter of Empress Theophanu

Harrias talk 12:02, 28 December 2014 (UTC)

Hey Thine Antique Pen. I wanted to ask if you might be interested in mentoring one or more editors during our pilot of the mentorship space called the Co-op. We plan to run the pilot in late January for about one month. The idea is that mentors will be doing one-on-one teaching based on how an editor wants to contribute, and it's not some huge commitment to teach comprehensively about Wikipedia. We also want to make to easier for new editors to find mentors as well. Your experience in content creation, copy-editing, and article clean-up will definitely be valuable to new editors starting or improving articles. If you're interested, please sign up here and feel free to peruse, make suggestions, or ask questions about how the Co-op will work. Thanks a bunch (and Happy New Year!), I, JethroBT drop me a line 04:30, 30 December 2014 (UTC)

WikiCup 2015 launch newsletter

Round one of the 2015 WikiCup has begun! So far we've had around 80 signups, which close on February 5. If you have not already signed up and want to do so, then you can add your name here. There have been changes to to several of the points scores for various categories, and the addition of Peer Reviews for the first time. These will work in the same manner as Good Article Reviews, and all of the changes are summarised here.

Remember that only the top 64 scoring competitors will make it through to the second round, and one of the new changes this year is that all scores must be claimed within two weeks of an article's promotion or appearance, so don't forget to add them to your submissions pages! If you are concerned that your nomination will not receive the necessary reviews, and you hope to get it promoted before the end of the round, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. However, please remember to continue to offer reviews at GAN, FAC and all the other pages that require them to prevent any backlogs which could otherwise be caused by the Cup. As ever, questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup and the judges are reachable on their talk pages. Good luck!
