[edit]Category:Persecution of ethnic groups by communist regimes
[edit]- The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more categories. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the category's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
- The result of the discussion was: delete. MER-C 12:29, 3 May 2020 (UTC)
- Nominator's rationale: While these regimes were probably really mean, this category is a mixture of too different things, and a magnet for OR and POV. The "communist" regimes here have in fact little in common, from 2010s China, Tito-era Yugoslavia, Ho's Vietnam and even (drum roll) Sandinist Nicaragua. The nature of "persecutions" is just as inconsistent, with the ethnic motivation being unclear or tangential (e.g. the Cambodian Genocide or the Insurgency in Laos), or the link between the communist nature of the regime and the ethnic nature of persecution no more than a trivial intersection (see WP:OCEGRS). Previously submitted for speedy deletion under criterion WP:G5 as creation of a blocked sockpuppet. Place Clichy (talk) 22:45, 22 April 2020 (UTC)
- Delete it seems like a coatrack for anti-communism.--User:Namiba 14:03, 23 April 2020 (UTC)
- Delete Ethnic cleansing is not limited to communist regimes, and I doubt if the ideology of regime is particularly defining here. Dimadick (talk) 19:50, 23 April 2020 (UTC)

Cycling coaches and managers
[edit]- The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more categories. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the category's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
- The result of the discussion was: keep. – Fayenatic London 06:16, 8 May 2020 (UTC)
- Propose merging Category:Cycling coaches and Category:Directeur sportifs to Category:Cycling coaches and managers
- Propose renaming Category: American cycling coaches to Category: American cycling coaches and managers
- Propose renaming Category: Australian cycling coaches to Category: Australian cycling coaches and managers
- Propose renaming Category:British cycling coaches to Category:British cycling coaches and managers
- Propose renaming Category:English cycling coaches to Category:English cycling coaches and managers

- Propose renaming Category:Welsh cycling coaches to Category:Welsh cycling coaches and managers
- Propose renaming Category:French cycling coaches to Category:French cycling coaches and managers
- Propose renaming Category:German cycling coaches to Category:German cycling coaches and managers
- Propose renaming Category:Italian cycling coaches to Category:Italian cycling coaches and managers
- Nominator's rationale: There is not a clearly defined difference in the roles of coach and "directeur sportif" (team manager), indeed almost all team managers will also coach their riders. The proposal is to merge the two top level categories under a new name and then rename all subcategories (with the exception of Category:Paralympic cycling coaches). In addition, the categories are very underused with many current team managers not categorised here at all. Severo (talk) 22:27, 22 April 2020 (UTC)
- Question, wouldn't "managers" or "team managers" be sufficient, thus omitting "coaches"? Marcocapelle (talk) 03:18, 24 April 2020 (UTC)
- Many of the biographies within the Category:Cycling coaches are coaches but not managers (particularly with regards to track cycling). Categorising coaches does have a place. Severo (talk) 22:00, 24 April 2020 (UTC)
- Keep all -- category names are better for being short. The concern at some being more managers than coaches can be dealt with through a headnote explaining the scope. Peterkingiron (talk) 15:22, 25 April 2020 (UTC)
- Suggestion, upmerge all country categories and redistribute between coaches in track cycling and managers in road cycling. Marcocapelle (talk) 15:32, 25 April 2020 (UTC)

Category:COVID-19
[edit]- The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more categories. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the category's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
- The result of the discussion was: no consensus. Some uses wish to apply the usual naming convention in which category names follow article names (if unambiguous). Others wish to apply {{Current COVID-19 Project Consensus}} which currently says that the full name should be used only in the lead article name, and the abbreviation in names of all other articles and categories etc. per consensus. Meanwhile, I see no reason not to add a redirect. – Fayenatic London 20:42, 2 May 2020 (UTC)
- Propose renaming Category:COVID-19 to Category:Coronavirus disease 2019
- Nominator's rationale: per main page Coronavirus disease 2019 Starzoner (talk) 18:47, 22 April 2020 (UTC)
- Rename per nom. COVID-19 is a redirect. Oculi (talk) 20:54, 22 April 2020 (UTC)
- Oppose. Keep category name and rename article Coronavirus disease 2019 to COVID-19. 94.179.168.56 (talk) 23:24, 22 April 2020 (UTC)
- Wrong way round - categories follow articles. Oculi (talk) 10:13, 23 April 2020 (UTC)
- Hi anon. Note that there is consensus against renaming the article.
>>BEANS X2t

- Rename, following the article (Coronavirus disease 2019). Naming of the article is the result of extensive discussion already (example). --MarioGom (talk) 09:31, 25 April 2020 (UTC)
- Rename article. COVID-19 is the World Health Organisation chosen name for the disease. We have had extensive discussions over the past few days over categories concerning people infected or dying from it in 2020, which I thought we had resolved by using the WHO name. WHO declined to call it the Wuhan virus or China virus, and plumped for COVID-19. However the target (being a plausible search term) should exist as a category-redirect. Peterkingiron (talk) 15:28, 25 April 2020 (UTC)
- Rename category to follow the main article per Peterkingiron. Steam5 (talk) 06:10, 26 April 2020 (UTC)
- @Steam5: please clarify, as your !vote and rationale contradict. – Fayenatic London 11:12, 30 April 2020 (UTC)
- Rename category as the main article is Coronavirus disease 2019. The proposal to rename the main article to COVID-19 was recently rejected. Armbrust The Homunculus 19:56, 26 April 2020 (UTC)
- Per {{Current COVID-19 Project Consensus}}: COVID-19 (full caps) is preferable in the body of all articles, and in the title of all other articles/category pages/etc. 94.179.168.56 (talk) 09:42, 27 April 2020 (UTC)
- That's irrelevant as it goes against WP:C2D. Armbrust The Homunculus 02:51, 29 April 2020 (UTC)
- C2D is irrelevant to controversial cases. – Fayenatic London 11:12, 30 April 2020 (UTC)
- That's right, but WP:CATNAME explicitly says "Names of topic categories should be singular, normally corresponding to the name of a Wikipedia article.". Armbrust The Homunculus 05:55, 2 May 2020 (UTC)
- Oppose. Per {{Current COVID-19 Project Consensus}} Bluesatellite (talk) 07:30, 28 April 2020 (UTC)

- The result of the discussion was: rename. MER-C 15:49, 8 May 2020 (UTC)
- Propose renaming Category:Comedy Central cartoons to Category:Comedy Central animated television series
- Nominator's rationale: "Cartoons" sounds like "comic strips" to me. Fuddle (talk) 16:04, 22 April 2020 (UTC)
- Comment Cartoon is a term including certain types of illustration, comic strips, comic books, and animation. Are all entries in this category animated television series? Dimadick (talk) 19:53, 23 April 2020 (UTC)
- Yes, they are all TV series, and the parent categories reinforce that. Fuddle (talk) 22:14, 23 April 2020 (UTC)

[edit]- The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more categories. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the category's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
- The result of the discussion was: delete. – Fayenatic London 11:14, 30 April 2020 (UTC)
- Nominator's rationale: Redundant with well-established national categories for the UK and Ireland. Note that the two articles present at the root of the category, about two extinct Maoist groups B&ICO and COBI, are already present in more precise subcategories. Place Clichy (talk) 15:07, 22 April 2020 (UTC)
- Delete Doesn't seem to be an appropriate form of categorisation. There are a few examples of parties that operate branches in more than one country (for example, the Syrian Social Nationalist Party has MPs in both Lebanon and Syria and is operational in a few other countries, and the Armenian Revolutionary Federation, which operates in Armenia, Lebanon and Artsakh). The two articles in it can just be added to the national categories of the ROI and UK. Number 57 15:22, 22 April 2020 (UTC)
- Delete. Concur with Number 57. Finnegas (talk) 16:27, 22 April 2020 (UTC)
- Delete. Not needed. Any transnational party can go into both Category:Political parties in the United Kingdom and Category:Political parties in Ireland, or their espective subcats. Scolaire (talk) 16:36, 22 April 2020 (UTC)
- Not a sensible strategy. Very few political parties stretch across national boundaries and those that do can be put into each appropriate national category. Rathfelder (talk) 21:20, 22 April 2020 (UTC)
- Delete making sure that the two articles which are related to left-wing Irish politics (north and south) and Irish expatriates in Britain are added to British and Irish categories, which they seem to straddle. Peterkingiron (talk) 15:35, 25 April 2020 (UTC)
- Delete - Sinn Fein is the only party of any significance operating in UK & ROI (no?). If there were more, that might make a category. But not this. Johnbod (talk) 22:33, 26 April 2020 (UTC)
- Delete per Johnbod. Steam5 (talk) 01:09, 29 April 2020 (UTC)

[edit]- The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more categories. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the category's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
- The result of the discussion was: merge. bibliomaniac15 23:19, 8 May 2020 (UTC)
- Nominator's rationale:
Dualupmerge to Category:American politicians of Vietnamese descent. Small category that is unlikely to grow; also fails WP:OCEGRS. User:Namiba 14:49, 22 April 2020 (UTC)
- Merge to Category:American politicians of Vietnamese descent only, Strong oppose merge as nom to the Asian parent because continent-level descent categories should be container categories per this and this discussion, otherwise Asian would be used as a proxy for race. Ineligible intersection per WP:OCEGRS. Place Clichy (talk) 17:40, 22 April 2020 (UTC)
- Keep or merge to American politicians of Vietnamese descent. "Unlikely to grow" is a bit crystal ball-ish; why is America unlikely to have more mayors of Vietnamese descent? If you were nominating all the other subcategories of American mayors of Asian descent at the same time, it might make the WP:OCEGRS argument stronger. Oppose merge to American mayors of Asian descent per Place Clichy – that is a container category. Scolaire (talk) 10:25, 23 April 2020 (UTC)
- It is not a container category. A now banned user created dozens if not hundreds of small, national categories such as these. Many have been deleted and will continue to be deleted. As for "unlikely to grow", well, that is the rationale per WP:SMALLCAT. The Vietnamese American population in the US isn't large and does not have a long history, so therefore it isn't likely to grow enough to justify the category.--User:Namiba 10:44, 23 April 2020 (UTC)
- @Namiba: What Scolaire and I meant is that Category:American mayors of Asian descent is a container category, not the nominated category. Many thanks for undertaking the long due clean-up of these trivial categories. Would you be in favour of merging to American politicians (or people) of Vietnamese descent only? There seems to be traction for that. Place Clichy (talk) 13:37, 23 April 2020 (UTC)
- Yes, I would be in favor of it.--User:Namiba 13:39, 23 April 2020 (UTC)

- The result of the discussion was: keep. The "Schoolteachers" categories have since been more properly diffused and populated by the creator of the categories. bibliomaniac15 21:23, 8 May 2020 (UTC)
- Nominator's rationale: Dual upmerge to Category:American schoolteachers. Small category that is unlikely to grow. User:Namiba 13:09, 22 April 2020 (UTC)
- Category:American schoolteachers has 1,432 articles about schoolteachers not categorised by state. I dont think this is a small category that is unlikely to grow.Rathfelder (talk) 15:48, 22 April 2020 (UTC)
- Comment - Category:Schoolteachers from South Carolina was created by Rathfelder (2 Feb 2020), and a single teacher found. As usual, rather than doing things properly, Rathfelder leaves it to others to populate his creations and to provide siblings for the scattering of states created (see Category:American schoolteachers by location) and dashes off to create dozens of other tiny categories, seemingly at random. Oculi (talk) 18:18, 22 April 2020 (UTC)
- Conditional keep, User:Rathfelder should agree on properly populating the categories they created (as the preferred option) or else merge per nom. Marcocapelle (talk) 19:57, 22 April 2020 (UTC)
- I am slowly working on occupational categories by location but its a big job. Rathfelder (talk) 21:17, 22 April 2020 (UTC)
- It's a big job indeed, but then please do not create new categories unless you have sufficient time to populate them decently. This category is 2 months old and nothing happened meanwhile. If these categories are kept, will you then prioritize populating them? Marcocapelle (talk) 03:09, 23 April 2020 (UTC)
- Note Per WP:NONDEF, "...not every verifiable fact (or the intersection of two or more such facts) in an article requires an associated category." This category is a great example of this policy being ignored. Many of the articles in Category:American schoolteachers are miscategorized. A major percentage simply worked as a schoolteacher at one time and are notable for other reasons. I just examined the first 20 entries in the C column and removed 7 of those with this category; their status as a schoolteacher was not-defining. Category wide, I suspect that the number of those who are defined by being a schoolteacher is likely a similar percentage. Whatever is decided, we should be careful not to replicate this mass overcategorization moving forward.--User:Namiba 11:06, 23 April 2020 (UTC)
- Ok, but if we keep two thirds of the articles (i.e. keep some 1000 articles in the U.S.), there is still nothing against categorization by state, is there? Marcocapelle (talk) 16:12, 23 April 2020 (UTC)

- There are about 30 subcategories for each state in Category:American people by state by occupation - and many of them with subcategories. It is of course true that many biographies are labelled with non-defining characteristics, but removing them often arouses opposition. The question of what is or is not defining is quite subjective and difficult. I'm quite happy to go back and do some more work in this area. Rathfelder (talk) 16:53, 23 April 2020 (UTC)
- True, but there is of course a difference between longstanding well-functioning categories and short-lived almost empty categories. That is why, if you are serious about creating a series of categories like this, you should also take responsibility for populating them. Marcocapelle (talk) 12:07, 24 April 2020 (UTC)
- Many of the existing state subcats by occupation are very sparsely populated. If I have a go at the school teachers will Oculi blame me if there turns out to be only one teacher from Wyoming? Rathfelder (talk) 16:21, 24 April 2020 (UTC)
- I have no idea why they would. Marcocapelle (talk) 06:34, 26 April 2020 (UTC)
- Diffuse American school teachers by state, to populate. A category with over 1000 articles is unmanageably large to use. Peterkingiron (talk) 15:41, 25 April 2020 (UTC)
- As the nominations below have been withdrawn I have started work on populating the state categories. And as User:Namiba found, quite a few barely mention school teaching, so I have purged them unless the teaching was in some way connected with what made them notable. Of course the same phenomenon appears in most occupational categories. Rathfelder (talk) 12:36, 1 May 2020 (UTC)
- Now I've purged them there are about 1000 left. Enough to populate the subcategories, though only 3 from Delaware. Rathfelder (talk) 22:28, 5 May 2020 (UTC)

- Defer and close to match South Carolina above, renaming if necessary. Peterkingiron (talk) 15:44, 25 April 2020 (UTC)
- Nomination Withdrawn so long as one or more people agree to populate it. Strongly support renaming as well.--User:Namiba 15:39, 28 April 2020 (UTC)

- The result of the discussion was: speedy keep after withdrawal (non-admin closure) Marcocapelle (talk) 13:50, 24 April 2020 (UTC)
- Nominator's rationale: Unnecessary intermediate category. Only content is Category:Carrom players Rathfelder (talk) 09:17, 22 April 2020 (UTC)
- Iff it would not be considered improper to have Category:Carrom players sit directly in the Category:Carrom people's parent categories Category:People in sports by sport and Category:People in the games industry (carrom being both a traditional board game at the everyday level and a competitive sport at the pro and serious-amateur level, similar to chess and billiards/pool), then I would support the deletion, but without prejudice against re-creation later. There's a bit of a WP:Systemic bias thing going on here. Carrom is huge in the Indian subcontinent (like snooker in the UK, novuss in Estonia and Latvia, bocce in Italy, boules and pétanque in France, etc.), and we simply lack articles at en.Wikipedia on notable persons in the field who are not players (carrom equipment-manufacturer CEOs, championship referees, top-selling instructional authors, etc.). — SMcCandlish ☏ ¢ 😼 10:05, 22 April 2020 (UTC)
- I would happily reinstate the category when there are some articles to populate it. Rathfelder (talk) 10:28, 22 April 2020 (UTC)
- Surely Henry L. Haskell fits the bill at least? Best Wishes, Lee Vilenski (talk • contribs) 11:31, 22 April 2020 (UTC)
- Keep - as SMcCandlish observes, there is a bias here. I found one, and also added Henry L. Haskell. I expect some of the people listed unlinked in the articles (umpires, officials etc) could be linked with a bit of perseverance. Oculi (talk) 12:14, 22 April 2020 (UTC)
- Happy to withdraw now it has some articles, and clearly there is scope for growth. Rathfelder (talk) 21:15, 22 April 2020 (UTC)

- Propose Deleting Category:Kitschies
- Propose Deleting/Listifying Category:Kitschies Red Tentacle-winning works
- Nominator's rationale: Per WP:NONDEFINING (WP:OCAWARD) and, for the parent category, WP:C2F
- The "Red Tentacle" is an award for the top novel of the Kitschies, a British fantasy/sci fi award. Of the 3 articles in this category, 2 mention it in passing with other awards and 1 mentions it in the intro so it doesn't seem defining. (In contrast, BSFA Award seems to be much more prominent for such novels.) The contents are already listified here in the main article. The parent category only contains the main article and this subcategory. - RevelationDirect (talk) 01:01, 22 April 2020 (UTC)

- Propose Deleting/Listifying Category:Oregon Book Award winners
- Nominator's rationale: Per WP:NONDEFINING (WP:OCAWARD)
- It looks like about 15 Oregon Book Awards are given out every year in different categories to specific books. This category contains the authors of those books who typically live or are from the State of Oregon. Those articles mention this award in passing in a list with other awards, if it's mentioned at all, so it doesn't seem defining. All of the winners, many of whom don't have a Wikipedia article, are already listified here in the main article. - RevelationDirect (talk) 01:01, 22 April 2020 (UTC)
