Cluster of WikiProject categories of dubious utility. Within the past week or so, one user arbitrarily started splitting Wikipedia:WikiProject Antigua and Barbuda up into numerous task forces for individual civil parishes without any obvious attempt at establishing a consensus that it was needed in the first place for such a small country, but their efforts also resulted in the generation of a couple of dozen underpopulated one-or-two-article class-assessment and quality-rating categories for each individual task force, and while they created a few of the resulting categories (i.e. the ones I'm listing here), they left many more of them sitting redlinked for Special:WantedCategories to have to clean up.
But our task force rules explicitly state that task forces are supposed to just use the Wikiproject's existing class-assessment and quality-rating infrastructures and categories rather than creating their own separate ones, meaning that none of the categories could be justifiably created for just one or two articles. So the WikiProject's banner template has accordingly been reset to class-rate and quality-rate articles into Antigua and Barbuda class and quality categories instead of separate parish-specific class and quality categories, which left these empty with no pressing need to retain them since they should never have existed in the first place. - Nominator's rationale: Only one article in each of these categories so far, which does not justify having a category in Floods by country. Merge without prejudice to re-creation if and when there are multiple articles. The member articles are already within the other parent hierarchies e.g. (for the first one) via Floods in North America by decade – Fayenatic London 12:00, 4 April 2023 (UTC).

- Query Is there much difference between this tree structure and the Category:Sportspeople by country of descent tree structure? Laurel Lodged (talk) 12:20, 6 April 2023 (UTC)
- @Laurel Lodged: yes there is. Sportspeople by country of descent is organized by 'old' country (e.g. Sportspeople of Afghan descent) while Sportspeople by ethnic or national origin is/was organized by 'new' country (e.g. Thai sportspeople by ethnic or national origin). That's not unlike People by ethnic or national descent vs. People by ethnic or national origin. However, the origin category was butchered and full of ineligible categories (such as arbitrary racial and regional categories) that were deleted in the discussions linked above, making it mostly empty and useless, besides most triple intersections of nationality, occupation and origin being considered trivial by many editors. - Nominator's rationale: Pointless middle category between Category:Wives by occupation of partner and Category:Association footballers' wives and girlfriends. Might be useful to move talk page to the latter or do some sorts of histmerge. Pelmeen10 (talk) 09:04, 4 April 2023 (UTC)
- Delete as there is little connection between the fact that these sports share 19th-century historic roots and the fame acquired as wives and girlfriends of famous sportsmen. All children categories (for Gaelic football, association football, rugby league and rugby union) are already in parent Category:Wives by occupation of partner, so there is nothing to merge. There is also a Category:American Football players' wives and girlfriends, don't know why it was skipped. Place Clichy (talk) 10:09, 4 April 2023 (UTC)

- Listify Category:Problems in spatial analysis to article List of problems in spatial analysis
- Nominator's rationale: or Spatial analysis#Problems; WP:SMALLCAT. fgnievinski (talk) 02:35, 4 April 2023 (UTC)
- I created the category originally to organize these topics, and I have a few articles for problems in spatial analysis in the works. I support the creation of such a list page if someone wants to put in the effort to make it. Obviously, this would take a bit of work. One question/suggestion I have is whether creating a list article in addition to the category might be better than converting the category to an article.
I won't argue with anyone who wants to take this on and will offer help if necessary. GeogSage (⚔Chat?⚔) 03:09, 4 April 2023 (UTC) - Comment, whether a category or a list, "problems" seem very broad. It may be recommendable to narrow that down. Marcocapelle (talk) 20:44, 4 April 2023 (UTC)
- Oppose — (1C 6P) is not small anymore. All articles and categories have "problem", "paradox", or "fallacy" in the title. Nicely done, GeogSage. Spatial analysis#Problems list would be a good idea, too.

- Propose renaming Category:Geographical regions to Category:Geopolitical regions
- Nominator's rationale: as per definition given in the category; there is nothing in geographic region restricting its scope. Note also we already have Category:Regions for the general case. fgnievinski (talk) 00:36, 4 April 2023 (UTC)
- Comment, I do not think anything in this category really fits the concept "geopolitical". Nom still has a point that there is nothing in geographic region restricting its scope, but then manually merging the content Category:Regions makes more sense. Marcocapelle (talk) 20:51, 4 April 2023 (UTC)
- Oppose — the parents are Category:Geography and Category:Regions. This is exactly where such same named sub-categories belong (such as Category:Geographical regions of Bulgaria).
William Allen Simpson (talk) 16:24, 5 April 2023 (UTC)
- Category:Regions is a child category of Category:Geography by location so parenting Category:Geographical regions to Category:Geography is surely redundant. Marcocapelle (talk) 20:25, 5 April 2023 (UTC)
- Interesting, I'd not thought to look at the parental tree. I'd only looked at the children.

- Interesting, I'd not thought to look at the parental tree. I'd only looked at the children.

- Oppose "geopolitical" has an entirely different and very WP:SUBJECTIVECAT meaning. Moreover, "geographical" isn't redundant just because its grandparent is Category:Geography by location. I think Category:Geographical regions should mostly be understood in contrast to its siblings, especially the following: Category:Agricultural regions, Category:Cultural regions, Category:Historical regions, Category:Military districts and regions, Category:Natural regions, Category:Physiographic divisions. "historical" and "military" have administrative meaning, "cultural" an anthropological meaning, "agricultural" a biological/socio-economic meaning, "natural" a biological/geological/climatological meaning, and "physiographic", a geological/plate-tectonical meaning. Where does "geographical" fit in? I'm not entire sure, but I would say it overlaps most strongly with the latter two, while not being identical with them. E.g. natural region is defined as
a region which is distinguished by its common natural features of geography, geology, and climate
, while physiographic region has something to do with physical geography and geomorphology, but nothing with climate, for example. Whichever way you put it, however, Category:Geographical regions probably has nothing to do with politics or geopolitics. That political description was not added to the category until 2 years ago, which I think was a bad decision that should be reversed. Cheers, Nederlandse Leeuw (talk) 22:23, 6 April 2023 (UTC)- PS: When Metternich stated in the early 19th century that Italien ist ein geographischer Begriff ("Italy is a geographical term"), he was making the point that it was not politically united. The article Italy (geographical region)#Italian unification and the effects of nationalism confirms this point exactly. From this perspective, calling a region "geographical" exactly means it is not "political". We shouldn't confuse the two. Cheers, Nederlandse Leeuw (talk) 22:34, 6 April 2023 (UTC)
