- Propose renaming Category:Ancient Jewish Greek history to Category:Hellenistic Jewish history
- Nominator's rationale: Current category name is clunky and also vague. The topic here is Hellenistic Jewish history in the classical period, while the "ancient period" is vaguer – also encompassing earlier periods. Proposed name says more with fewer words. Iskandar323 (talk) 18:01, 5 September 2024 (UTC)
- Category:Hellenistic Judaism already exists. What would be the distinction between that and Category:Hellenistic Jewish history? I feel like a merge might make more sense here. jlwoodwa (talk) 04:05, 6 September 2024 (UTC)
- From what I can tell, that category is about religion and is a subcategory of this one, which is about the history of the people. Mclay1 (talk) 12:09, 7 September 2024 (UTC)

- Rename aligning with Hellenistic Judaism. Marcocapelle (talk) 20:02, 5 September 2024 (UTC)
- Support. While the current category description says it's for all of classical antiquity, I'm not sure there's any point to covering before or after the Hellenistic period in this category. Category:Ancient Jewish Persian history should probably also be renamed to something else. Mclay1 (talk) 12:12, 7 September 2024 (UTC)

Category:Ethically disputed practices
[edit]- The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more categories. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the category's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
- The result of the discussion was: delete it and the tagged subcategories. HouseBlaster (talk • he/they) 21:36, 13 September 2024 (UTC)
- Nominator's rationale: This, as well as all subcategories of this category beginning with "ethically disputed", should be deleted per WP:SUBJECTIVECAT. The fact is that almost any practice can have a dispute as to its ethics - for example, if I have a sandwich, I can be committing the ethical sins of eating meat, GMO food, and food made by poorly-paid workers, as well as paying companies making unhealthy processed food. If I use toilet paper in the bathroom I could be doing the ethically debated practice of putting pollution in the water supply and wasting water. There's no end to it and it's wholly subjective. ᴢxᴄᴠʙɴᴍ (ᴛ) 16:11, 5 September 2024 (UTC)
- Note: Category:Ethically disputed business practices can be kept and renamed to Category:Unfair business practices instead, per its main article, which would be more accurate and eliminate the subjectivity of the current name. ᴢxᴄᴠʙɴᴍ (ᴛ) 16:19, 5 September 2024 (UTC)
- The existence of the article does not make labeling business practises as unfair less subjective. At best the category might be kept as illegal business practises. Marcocapelle (talk) 17:28, 5 September 2024 (UTC)
- Looking at the unfair business practices article, which describes how countries define and deal with unfair business practices, I don't think it's anywhere near as subjective as "ethically disputed" is. jlwoodwa (talk) 04:14, 6 September 2024 (UTC)
- Yes, I'm talking about the specific legal term. Though if people believe that article fails GNG, I'm not opposed to just deleting that category too. It might be best to merge the article into Anti-competitive practices. ᴢxᴄᴠʙɴᴍ (ᴛ) 05:37, 6 September 2024 (UTC)

Category:Counts in the Holy Roman Empire
[edit]- The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more categories. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the category's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
- The result of the discussion was: merge Category:Counts in the Holy Roman Empire to Category:Counts of the Holy Roman Empire (i.e. forward merge). Clear consensus in favor of a single category; one late objection which was not elaborated on after a request does not change that consensus favored a merge. That brings us to the direction of a merge. Marcocapelle supported a reverse merge, but this was a self-declared
slightly prefer[ed]
outcome. Given that Mason and Mclay1 both supported a forward merge, with no policy/guideline weighting to be done here, there is consensus for a forward merge. HouseBlaster (talk • he/they) 06:43, 14 September 2024 (UTC)- Propose merging Category:Counts in the Holy Roman Empire to Category:Counts of the Holy Roman Empire
- Nominator's rationale: Extremely overlapping categories. If the solution is to keep "in" instead of "of" then we should merge and then rename back to preserve the history. See [[1]] for a discussion about the merits of renaming the original versus the creation of a duplicate. Mason (talk) 13:48, 20 August 2024 (UTC)
- Support in principle, these categories are just dupicates. I would slightly prefer reverse merge though, because these weren't counts of the Holy Roman Empire in its entirety and I don't think that "count of the Holy Roman Empire" was an official title. Marcocapelle (talk) 16:34, 20 August 2024 (UTC)
- I'm fine with the final name being Counts in FOO, but I think that we should still perserve the history of the much older category. Mason (talk) 21:06, 20 August 2024 (UTC)
- That is reasonable enough. I will tag the target too. Marcocapelle (talk) 06:04, 21 August 2024 (UTC)
- I'm fine with the final name being Counts in FOO, but I think that we should still perserve the history of the much older category. Mason (talk) 21:06, 20 August 2024 (UTC)
- Support merge to Category:Counts of the Holy Roman Empire. With two exceptions (that should probably be renamed), Category:Counts by country consistently uses of. There is no title Count of France, Count of Denmark, etc. but that is how those categories are named and it does make grammatical sense. It could be slightly confusing, but Counts in France would also be slightly confusing because not all people with noble titles from a country actually reside in that country, and there could be counts of other countries living in France. Mclay1 (talk) 14:13, 27 August 2024 (UTC)

Relisting comment: Thoughts on Mclay1's comment?
Please add new comments below this notice. Thanks, HouseBlaster (talk • he/they) 20:17, 28 August 2024 (UTC)
- Renaming all "of" by country to "in" makes more sense, unless they were counts of a count(r)y in its entirety or if was an official title. We use "of" correctly in e.g. Category:Counts of Holland which is completely incompatible with Category:Counts of the Netherlands. Marcocapelle (talk) 21:09, 28 August 2024 (UTC)
- There is a lot of inconsistency within Category:Nobility by country and it needs a broader discussion. As well as in and of, there is also from (Category:Nobility from the Russian Empire). Mclay1 (talk) 03:59, 31 August 2024 (UTC)
- I hate to complicate this, but I think (although I'm not certain) there may be a distinction here. I believe "Count of the Empire" or "Count of the Holy Roman Empire" is a common English translation of Reichsgraf (or "Imperial Count"); a count who owed fealty to one of the constituent states of the Empire would be a count in the Empire, but not a Reichsgraf. If we're going to recognize that distinction (and I have no idea if that's what the current category structure does), I do think it would make sense to name the more narrow category "Imperial Counts" or something like that to reduce confusion. - Nominator's rationale: WP:SMALLCAT. Need at least half a dozen members for a category or template to be useful, which is not the case here. Created by an overzealous user. Amaury • 08:46, 20 August 2024 (UTC)
- @Amaury WP:SMALLCAT is not longer a policy. Mason (talk) 13:52, 20 August 2024 (UTC)
- Seems like such a silly decision to no longer make it so, but at this point, it is what it is since it's already happened. It doesn't seem like it was replaced with anything else or like an equivalent guideline/policy exists, that I can find. So, can anyone just make any category or template under the sun now? Genuine question. Amaury • 17:40, 20 August 2024 (UTC)
- Comment - WP:OC still has plenty of limits on what categories should be made; the depreciation of WP:SMALLCAT just means that the fact that a category can only have a small number of things in it is no longer an exclusionary rationale in itself. Alphius (talk) 04:34, 25 August 2024 (UTC)
- Thank you. Then I guess WP:NARROWCAT would be the next best one to file this under. Getting rid of SMALLCAT as a guideline/policy was still a poor decision, in my opinion. Amaury • 17:46, 28 August 2024 (UTC)

- Nominator's rationale: There's a very large overlap among companies doing business in cosmetics and personal care, merging them into a single category tree would be much easier to navigate and maintain.
If the proposal looks like it has a chance, I'll come back in a day to properly tag the subcategories.Done now. Paul_012 (talk) 08:09, 20 August 2024 (UTC), updated 09:55, 21 August 2024 (UTC)
- Is there really a large overlap? Shampoo and toothpaste are quite different from cosmetics, I can imagine that different companies tap into each. Marcocapelle (talk) 06:18, 21 August 2024 (UTC)
- Maybe I was generalising, but that was my impression looking at some of the by-country categories recently populated by User:FrederickEvans. Almost all the members under Category:Personal care companies of Japan, for example, are also under Category:Cosmetics companies of Japan, while Category:Personal care companies of Thailand and Category:Cosmetics companies of Thailand are completely identical. --Paul_012 (talk) 09:23, 21 August 2024 (UTC)
- Ah ok. On the other hand in the United States there are far more entries in the cosmetics category than in the personal care category, suggesting a specialization in cosmetics. Maybe we can keep cosmetics as a subcategory in the United States. To a lesser extent this also applies to the United Kingdom. Marcocapelle (talk) 04:16, 22 August 2024 (UTC)

- Technically it would be a union rather than an intersection, but I agree that cosmetics and personal care aren't similar enough to justify lumping them together here. jlwoodwa (talk) 04:26, 6 September 2024 (UTC)

- The result of the discussion was: delete. Liz Read! Talk! 02:37, 13 September 2024 (UTC)
- Nominator's rationale: This doesn't appear to be any different to its subcategory. I cleaned up the contents and everything ended up in there so it's otherwise empty. I can't find any evidence that the term "Thraco-Macedonian mythology" exists. No need to upmerge. Mclay1 (talk) 14:15, 5 September 2024 (UTC)
- Delete, "Macedonian" has artificially been added while the content is Thracian. Marcocapelle (talk) 17:36, 5 September 2024 (UTC)

Category:Minyan mythology
[edit]- The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more categories. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the category's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
- The result of the discussion was: merge. HouseBlaster (talk • he/they) 06:38, 14 September 2024 (UTC)
- Propose merging Category:Minyan mythology to Category:Boeotian mythology
- Nominator's rationale: Upmerge unnecessary category layer. The category name implies that it's for mythology of the Minyan people rather than what it actually is, which is Greek mythology relating to the Minyans. Most of the articles are in the subcategory Category:Minyans. Mclay1 (talk) 12:33, 5 September 2024 (UTC)
- Note to closer: The target is nominated for renaming to Category:Mythology of Boeotia below. Mclay1 (talk) 12:39, 5 September 2024 (UTC)

- The result of the discussion was: rename. HouseBlaster (talk • he/they) 06:37, 14 September 2024 (UTC)
- Propose renaming Category:Paeonian mythology to Category:Mythological Paeonians
- Nominator's rationale: All but one of these articles (Amydon) are for mythological Paeonian people in Greek mythology. The current name makes it sound like it's for the local mythology of the Paeonian people. Reparent to somewhere in Category:Mythological people by nationality, and the one article that doesn't fit can be purged. Mclay1 (talk) 11:26, 5 September 2024 (UTC)

- The result of the discussion was: soft delete. Based on minimal participation, this uncontroversial nomination is treated as an expired PROD (a.k.a. "soft deletion"). Editors can request the category's undeletion. HouseBlaster (talk • he/they) 21:15, 13 September 2024 (UTC)
- Nominator's rationale: The region of Karabakh has rather imprecise boundaries. Most people from Karabakh do not fall into this category, as they are already classified under more specific categories. Sakakami (talk) 07:49, 5 September 2024 (UTC)
- If kept, containerize by the appropriate province and district categories. Marcocapelle (talk) 17:48, 5 September 2024 (UTC)

- The result of the discussion was: merge to Category:Agricultural education. Liz Read! Talk! 02:35, 13 September 2024 (UTC)
- Propose merging Category:Student farms to Category:Agricultural education
- Nominator's rationale: Upmerge for now. This category only has one page in it, which isn't helpful for navigation Mason (talk) 00:38, 5 September 2024 (UTC)
- Merge per nom, without objection to recreate the category when some more articles about the topic are available. Marcocapelle (talk) 05:07, 5 September 2024 (UTC)
- hmm, yes, as the originator of this category, I agree that you nice folks have a valid point here. okay. and thanks @Marcocapelle, for your collegial and positive comment, suggesting the category could be developed sometime in the future, if and when further relevant articles might be available. Sm8900 (talk) 13:13, 5 September 2024 (UTC)
- Yep, I second Marco that this category could be re-developed/revived. (That's what I intended to convey with upmerge for now). Mason (talk) 23:32, 5 September 2024 (UTC)

- The result of the discussion was: merge to Category:Medical education. HouseBlaster (talk • he/they) 21:10, 13 September 2024 (UTC)
- Propose merging Category:History of medical education to Category:History of medicine
- Nominator's rationale: Upmerge. This category is underpopulated and neither of the pages are really about the history of medical education. Mason (talk) 00:35, 5 September 2024 (UTC)
- Alt merge to Category:Medical education. Neither of the two articles is clearly about history. Marcocapelle (talk) 05:13, 5 September 2024 (UTC)
- Equally fine with me. However, the category creator is adding additional pages while editing logged out, so the contents might change. Mason (talk) 23:31, 5 September 2024 (UTC)

- Nominator's rationale: This category only contains one page, but the name implies that it should be a container for specific regions. Mason (talk) 00:24, 5 September 2024 (UTC)

- Propose merging Category:Electronic waste in Nigeria to Category:Waste management in Nigeria and Category:Electronic waste in Africa
- Propose merging Category:Electronic waste in Ghana to Category:Environmental issues in Ghana
- Nominator's rationale: Upmerge for now. These categories only has one page in it, which isn't helpful for navigation. The only page in Electronic waste in Ghana is already in Electronic waste in Africa Mason (talk) 00:21, 5 September 2024 (UTC)

- The result of the discussion was: purge of non-academics and then merge to Category:Forestry academics. HouseBlaster (talk • he/they) 21:18, 13 September 2024 (UTC)
- Propose merging Category:Forestry researchers to Category:Forestry academics
- Nominator's rationale: I think we should merge these two categories; they're highly overlapping. Mason (talk) 00:14, 5 September 2024 (UTC)
- Charles C. Deam wasn't an academic, what to do with this article (and maybe similar articles)? Marcocapelle (talk) 05:21, 5 September 2024 (UTC)
- Support. Deam is already categorised under Category:American foresters, which is sufficient and part of a substantial larger category. -- Necrothesp (talk) 14:18, 5 September 2024 (UTC)
- Ok so that is a purge and merge then (remove non-academics first). Marcocapelle (talk) 15:24, 5 September 2024 (UTC)
