- File:JRR Tolkien signature - from Commons.svg (delete | talk | history | links | logs) – uploaded by Commons fair use upload bot (notify | contribs | uploads | upload log).
This file has already been deleted multiple times after deletion discussions: Commons:Deletion requests/File:Tolkien signature.svg; Commons:Deletion requests/PD ineligible signatures. The point is that in the country of origin, the United Kingdom, personal signatures may be interpreted as artistic works and are therefore eligible for copyright. See Commons:Commons:When to use the PD-signature tag#United Kingdom. While Commons may have different rules with regards to copyright, also Wikipedia's {{PD-signature}} requires that the signature be free of copyright in its source country, and any doubtful reproductions should be deleted. While Nyttend thinks that this is absurd and tagged the image as a font or typeface being in the public domain, I beg to differ. Fonts and typefaces are mechanical reproductions of standardised geometrical shapes, i.e. letters. But as you can see from the Commons page about PD-signature, the current British legal system seems to interpret handwritten signatures as something creative and copyrightable.
Finally I don't see a way how we could possibly keep the image under a fair-use-rationale. It does not contribute anything to the article J. R. R. Tolkien or other pages that can't be expressed in written form, so I fail to see a proper purpose for using the file. De728631 (talk) 14:53, 4 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
If we can however convert the license to a fair use rationale I'd be happy to keep the image. De728631 (talk) 15:40, 5 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
- Since a suitable free license has been found for hosting the file on the English Wikipedia I hereby withdraw this nomination. De728631 (talk) 12:18, 11 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
- I agree that the UK law is absurd if it considers that signatures are eligible for copyright protection, but unfortunately we have to abide by the copyright law in the country of origin. It is nice to be able to show the signature of the subject of an article, but it is not essential to understanding the article, and the article does not discuss any particular features of Tolkien's signature, so I see no way of keeping it under fair use rationale. So reluctantly forced to support deletion. BabelStone (talk) 16:40, 4 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
- Convert to fairuse signatures and penmanship are important elements to many people, especially Tolkien, since he used his penmanship in his maps. -- 76.65.131.160 (talk) 06:41, 5 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
- I like your idea. This would however mean that we need to reflect on his signature in the article's text, and I think I have just found the appropriate source to refer to. Apparently signed books and autographs have created a collectors' market and also the obvious fakes. Should be worth reporting in the Legacy section of the main article. De728631 (talk) 15:40, 5 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
- I've now added a section "Autographs" to the article J. R. R. Tolkien that treats the importance of Tolkien's signature and I have prepared a FUR. However, I'm still not sure about the image being an SVG, which means that it is scalable and not of low resolution as required for fair use. I think we should better use the 200px PNG output instead and delete the SVG version. De728631 (talk) 16:46, 5 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
- I have uploaded a low resolution JPG from the original source at File:JRR Tolkien Signature.jpg with a fair use rationale which is now being used in the Tolkien article. De728631 (talk) 17:04, 5 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

- Keep. Signatures are not copyrightable in the USA, so a combination of {{PD-US}} and {{Do not move to Commons}} would suffice. Nyttend (talk) 22:37, 5 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
- If it is copyrighted abroad in a URAA member-nation then it's not PD-US. See [1]: "Works Published Abroad Before 1978 / Solely published abroad, without compliance with US formalities or republication in the US, and not in the public domain in its home country as of 1 January 1996 / 95 years after publication date." I suppose that is why PD-signature requires mentioning the country of origin. De728631 (talk) 11:15, 6 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
- The first edition of The Lord of the Rings, whence this image was taken, was published in the United States well before 1978. Nyttend (talk) 00:40, 10 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
- Publication of the individual signature is important here, not the book. And we don't know when the first image of this very autograph was published, ergo not PD. De728631 (talk) 21:35, 10 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

. The case Bridgeman Art Library v. Corel Corp. tells that US courts only care about the US threshold of originality. Since it is below the threshold of originality in the United States, the copyright status in other countries is irrelevant. --Stefan2 (talk) 12:06, 11 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]- Good catch! Awkward border, watermarking, and the tag at the bottom of the file description page indicating that the user is at CCI all make me think that this is a false claim of own work. Several other photographs of this object are already on Commons. Sven Manguard Wha? 17:24, 4 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
File converted to pdf as original file format was not accepted for upload. Please bear with till we get better option available on the subject. There is no photograph available on this subject in Wiki Commons. Most of my pictures are of religious common interest, taken by me. Some are converted to pdf, not of perfect quality, hence doubted.--Md iet (talk) 05:00, 6 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
As long as there is no better files I do not think we should delete just because it is pdf.
Some of the uploaders other files was on the Internet in larger versions. But I found no versions on the Internet of this file with google except for some that linked to Wikipedia or was newer than the one on Wikipedia. So no evidence that this file is not own work. So it is a question of trust. I checked the other 9 similar files on Wikipedia:Contributor_copyright_investigations/Md_iet#PDFs:
- File:Mausoleum of 6 th Wali -ul- Hind Moulai adam,Ahmedabad.pdf - seems to be uploaded to http://saifeesurka.multiply.com/photos/album/170/ahmd-m.adam-mazar-fotos?&show_interstitial=1&u=%2Fphotos%2Falbum#photo=3 before it was uploaded to Wikipedia.
- File:Roja hatim .pdf - seems to be uploaded to http://www.mirabaz.com/wordpress/articles/ismailis-from-yemen-to-india-and-back/ before it was uploaded to Wikipedia.
- File:Roja Dai jam Nagar.pdf - seems to be uploaded to http://www.panoramio.com/photo/96272 before it was uploaded to Wikipedia.
- File:Mausoleum of 7 th Wali -ul-Hind Moulai Hasan bin Adam.pdf - also on http://rangwalatravels.com/ahmedabad09.html but I can't tell which file was uploaded first
- File:Dawoodi Bohra 24 th Dai Syedna Yusuf Najmuddin bin Suleman.pdf - also on http://media.mumineen.org/gallery/displayimage.php?album=8&pos=46 and it seems older than the file on Wikipedia and it is credited "Al- Jamea TUS Saifiyah Publications"
- File:Qibla.pdf - on http://archnet.org/library/images/one-image.jsp?location_id=4782&image_id=62850 in higher resolution.
- File:Kufa masjid.pdf - many versions on the Internet. However, I found no larger versions.
- File:Dai Surat .pdf - also on http://saifeesurka.multiply.com/photos/album/165/Surat#photo=2 and that seems to be uploaded before it was uploaded to Wikipedia.
- File:Zarih Sohda.pdf - much larger version on http://www.mowswoat-suhofe-alltyybeyyn.org/1alsoralhasena/marikd/karbala/alhosen/3karbla.jpg
It seems that more of them are copyvios so I suggest we delete them all. --MGA73 (talk) 15:25, 8 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

- File:Hearts - Windows 7 x64 - shooting the moon.png (delete | talk | history | links | logs) – uploaded by Pointillist (notify | contribs | uploads | upload log).
Non-free screenshot is not needed to explain the concept of shooting the moon. Can be entirely replicated using plain text, and if necessary, an image using actual printed cards. Sven Manguard Wha? 17:30, 4 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
- Actually the intention was to illustrate scoring more generally, but on reflection I don't think the current image does that job properly. If I have time, I'll capture a more typical scoreboard showing (i) shooting the moon; (ii) how scores are reckoned and (iii) the fact that the games is won by a score ≥100. I'll then {{db-author}} the current image. - Pointillist (talk) 11:50, 6 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
- Comment The image is being used to illustrate this facet in the Windows version of Hearts, so it's not replaceable by a free image. I'm aware that that doesn't address your proposal of being replaceable with plain text or the simple possibility that we might not need it at all. Nyttend (talk) 00:43, 10 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
