Info about the event

[edit]

The UCL Institute of Healthcare Engineering are hosting a Wikithon where we will focus on making or improving Wikipedia entries of under-represented scientists, clinicians and inventors. Join us to celebrate the people in science that deserve a more prominent place in the online historical record. You'll learn how to edit Wikipedia in order to harness the power of the web to share your knowledge.

For nice easy edits:

  • Check that people are mentioned on relevant pages - do pages about the science they work on mention their name?
  • Add wikilinks using the chain link button to help people find out more about the person's research topics, the places where they have worked, etc.
  • Add infoboxes - there's a handy guide here.
  • Check that people are included on lists like these.
  • Translate information between different language versions of Wikipedia.
  • Check out Wikidata - look on the grey bar on the left for the link to Wikidata and there's a guide here on how to edit Wikidata entries.
  • Add people to categories - click edit, then click on the three horizontal lines beside the pencil, then choose Categories. Look at other people's entries for inspiration for categories you could use.

Here are some useful links to help you with your editing:

  • You can add pictures for use on Wiki-pages and beyond on Wikimedia Commons. Your Wikipedia account will work on Commons too - as well as all the other Wiki-projects and different language versions of Wikipedia.

  • You can view all your contributions to Wikipedia by clicking "Contributions" (in the top right of this page).
  • The Pageviews tool is a great way of measuring how many people are looking at the page you created/edited. You can even export the data if you'd like it for reports, etc.
