  • Why: Always good to catch up and discuss how we contribute to Wikimedia Australia content on the Wikimedia projects - whether as a seasoned editor or a beginner wanting to learn.
  • How: Conversation, while dining on hot pizzas which will be provided. Participants are asked to buy their own coffee or tea.

Planning on attending

[edit]
  • My apologies. There's a meeting at the Unitarian Church tomorrow (Sunday) in which an attempt is being made to remove a member of the Committee. I'm not behind it. The member concerned claims I am an ASIO agent and I that I rigged last year's election at the Church. I hope I can attend the next meet up. Lyle.
  • Apologies - still recovering from recent surgery, hopefully be at the next one. Best wishes, --Peterdownunder (talk) 03:41, 24 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Melbourne Meetup, held on 25 March, 2012

[edit]

The March Melbourne Meetup was attended by an enthusiastic but small number of participants. In particular conversation covered the difficulties sometimes experienced when editing and creating articles on Wikipedia and experienced as barriers to successful articles being placed on Wikipedia, however, a resolve by attendees to work it out was encouraging.

Some discussion covered WikiProjects across Australia, in Victoria and in Melbourne. Participants were interested in the link to the article 'The Undue Weight of Truth' which was provided [2].

Participants dicussed a possible alternative venue for Melbourne Meetups, namely 'Computerbank' at 483 Victoria Street, West Melbourne [3]. This building has been previously provided as a venue for WMAU general meetings and has facilities for warming food and providing ample supply of hot water for beverages. Importantly lap tops can be accommodated and easily hooked up to the internet which may be useful to participants.

Links were also provided for interest, to Wikinews.org [4], and also some encouragement to participants to familiarise themselves with WMAU's website information, including membership.

Non-members are also able to Request an Account on the Wiki of Wikimedia Australia, and it is hoped that attendees at future meetups avail themselves of this service and thereby interact with the Melbourne Meetup page by way of making suggestions for improvements to future Meetups.

For those beginning to edit on a wiki and for future reference make a copy of the location of this page which you can type into the left hand pane and press 'Go' which will take you directly to this page and can be helpful for future ease of access, i.e. 'Meetups:WMAU Victorian Meetups 2012'. For applicants who are participants at the Melbourne Meetups and not yet members of Wikimedia Australia it may be a good idea to include in the Request Account form, under the field "Please tell us a little about yourself...' that you have been attending the Melbourne Meetups and now request an account on the wiki. These can be verified via the Melbourne Meetup attendee list. This will assist our account approvers when approving accounts.

Please do use the 'discussion' tab (heading this page) for lively conversation and ideas.
