Wikipedia:Meetup/UNC/Art + Feminism 2016

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Sloane Art Library at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill will host its fourth edit-a-thon on 20 April 2016. Join library staff and students at UNC's School of Information and Library Science for an evening of social Wikipedia editing!

At the edit-a-thon, which is open to the public, we will create and improve Wikipedia articles on women in art. All are invited, with no specialized knowledge of the subject or Wikipedia editing experience required. A brief overview of the basics of Wikipedia editing will be given at the start of the edit-a-thon. We will have library resources and a list of suggested topics on hand.

Background

[edit]

Wikipedia's gender gap is well-documented. In a 2011 survey; Wikimedia found that less than 13% of its contributors are female.[1] The reasons for the gender gap are up for debate: suggestions include leisure inequality, how gender socialization shapes public comportment, and the contentious nature of Wikipedia's talk pages. The practical effect of this disparity, however, is not. Content is skewed by the lack of female participation. Many articles on notable women in history and art are absent on Wikipedia. This represents an alarming aporia in an increasingly important repository of shared knowledge.
