Master and socks appear to be collaborating on articles about the works of Javad Ramezani, specifically Shokofeha (song). (Check its history.) The IPs have been engaged in disruptive removal of deletion templates, and false claims of "good article" status. Both registered users also copied user pages from administrators, including claims that they themselves were admins. Deleted contributions (to which I have no access) will show more evidence of their activitities in regards to Ramezani's music. WikiDan61ChatMe!ReadMe!! 12:55, 14 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I'm opening this more just for records keeping than anything else, although I would like a quick check for sleepers since it looks like there's usually more than just 1-2 accounts editing at any given point in time.

Long story short, weeks ago I came across User:Mohafzanwikipedia, who created the page for Javad Ramezani Sorab, which tried to assert notability by copying stuff from Bieber's article. He linked to this site, which contained an image of a young boy for one of its songs. When User:Jangomra created the article Aman az Eshgh (album Javad) the name Ramezani didn't immediately cause me to link the accounts together, although the image of the young boy on this page did. I was going to tag this as a sock of Mohafzanwikipedia until I saw that the newest page linked to Javad Ramezani, which is associated with جواد رمضانی شوراب. A look at the prior SPIs shows that this is a pretty clear WP:DUCK scenario and an attempt to add Ramezani to Wikipedia. Tokyogirl79 (｡◕‿◕｡) 09:57, 18 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

The first three date back to October 2014 and are reported for completeness; all created JR-related pages. Khrrr created Woman (Javad Ramezani song); Jenerameral created Hero (Javad Ramezani song); Kakababara created Aman az Eshgh about a JR album, and Ghgtfytg re-created it when it was deleted; Harmok created Spre mare (Inna&Javad song) and Jaklanh created The Magic of Christmas (Natalie Cole album).

Note a new technique on the last two - no doubt to evade the edit filter, hoax articles with false references are created about albums by known singers on which JR is supposed to have collaborated. JohnCD (talk) 20:37, 1 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Farmandeh dates back to May, created Aman az eshgh (album) about a JR album. The other two are new: Hamborgook created Leavin' (album) about a (real} Natalie Cole album where JR was claimed to have joined her in the vocals (a precocious lad, as the album was released in 2002 when he was 8 years old). There has been a change of tactic: he is less interested in pretending to be a great singer, and is now pretending to be an ethologist, adding his name next to that of Konrad Lorenz with edits like this. If a target like that is semi-protected, he moves on to another. I have a list of 20 IPs he has used in the last few days, in the ranges 2.180.0.0/17 and 5.232.0.0/17, but I see no point listing them here; nor do I think a check for sleepers is necessary - as before, these accounts were created a few minutes before editing. There are 58 accounts listed at Category:Wikipedia sockpuppets of جواد رمضانی شوراب & Category:Suspected Wikipedia sockpuppets of جواد رمضانی شوراب and there are literally dozens more accounts confirmed at Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/جواد رمضانی شوراب/Archive but not tagged, so they don't show up in the categories. Thus the total number of known sockpuppets must be huge. The editor has also made extensive use of IP-sockpuppetry; the IP addresses that I know of are in the ranges 2.180.32.0/19 5.232.0.0/17 and 151.238.0.0/17. The first two of those ranges are currently blocked, and the third was recently blocked. Perhaps because of the blocks, the editor has returned to using sockpuppet accounts rather than IP editing. However, there is a new development, which is use of one or more sleepers. As far as I know, in the past all new sockpuppets edited within a short time of their creation, in most cases within a few minutes, but recently that has changed: the account Goramk was created on 15 July 2015, but first edited on 24 July. In view of this development, I wonder if there may be more sleepers, and in view of the extensive amount of sockpuppetry, I feel it would be worth a CheckUser to investigate. With such an enormous number of sockpuppets, a CheckUser on every one of them would probably take an unreasonable amount of time and trouble, but perhaps a check on a sample of accounts and known IP addresses might be reasonable.

A very few of the accounts are stale, but most aren't. "An unusual request" yes, but by no means a unique or unprecedented one: reasonably frequently over the years I have made similar requests, which have been accepted. "Zero evidence that any king of abuse is currently ongoing"? Perhaps as well as mentioning by name one sockpuppet and giving the date of its first edit (which was less than 24 hours before I posted my message above) I should have specified that there have also been other recent sockpuppets. I thought that was implied by what I wrote. Also, it didn't cross my mind that I needed to do so, because as far as I remember in the years since I became an administrator I have never known any clerk to expect an administrator to give chapter and verse in this sort of way in a sockpuppet investigation: most clerks, in my experience, accept that if an administrator has determined that sockpuppetry is going on then we work on the basis that it is. However, since evidence has been requested, I will give a list of a few of the most recent sockpuppets. Every one of them is 100% certain: every one of them has been adding the same nonsense about Javad Ramezani that previous accounts and IP addresses used by this editor have added, in some cases word-for word identical.

Bbb23 asks which account or accounts should be checked. I actually thought that a CheckUser, who knows far better than I do what is involved in the check, would be better able to judge than I am what is likely to be useful, so I linked to the categories listing the numerous sockpuppets to choose from, and gave list of the few that I know are stale, to save a CheckUser from wasting time on them. I actually thought that would be more helpful than picking out some accounts myself, without knowing what is involved. However, perhaps the most obvious starting place would be the recent ones I have listed in the paragraph above. I will also give some of the most recent IP addresses, in case that may be helpful to a checkuser. None of them has edited anonymously in the last few days, no doubt at least partly because nearly all of them are in IP ranges that I have blocked. 151.238.18.74, 5.232.49.225, 5.232.30.250, 5.232.42.226, 5.232.41.108, 2.180.63.53, 2.180.50.29, 2.180.60.58, 2.180.54.173. (Of course I am not suggesting that a CheckUser should comment on the IP addresses, I am just offering them in case they may help to know where to look.)
Having said all that, as I explained above, my reason for suggesting a CheckUser was that as far as I know just one of the sockpuppet accounts has acted like a sleeper, being created and then not editing for a while, but since that one was one of the most recent accounts, it might suggest a new tactic, so that there may be others. Found a new sock. This user created Gratitude and the Good Life: Toward a Psychology of Appreciation. While the article doesn't mention Javad Ramezani (one of the most common names this person tries to add to Wikipedia), I found it attached to the Amazon page for the "book" that the "author " Hickman Jr Cleveland P wrote. I put that into quotations since the book is actually this book lifted wholesale. A look at the page history for the book shows that there was previously another attempt to create the article by Recharddadamol, who I'm also listing here.

Now a look at the page for Hickman Jr Cleveland P shows the link, where they specifically name Javad Ramezani. The account for this is Justin tomaro and there was an IP involved as well.

I'm going to alert Springer and Amazon to the fact that someone is stealing someone else's work and passing it off as their own. I'd recommend a check for sleepers just in case, but I'll block and tag the accounts accordingly. Tokyogirl79 (｡◕‿◕｡) 07:10, 4 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]

  • The account is a duck, and I've blocked it indefinitely. It isn't going to be possible to do much about the IP addresses, as they are spread across very wide ranges, with too much collateral damage likely if any block is imposed for more than a sort time. I have, however, blocked the range 37.129.0.0/16 for 2 weeks, and I'll look at the other ranges to see whether short blocks may be justifiable there. JBW (talk) 21:44, 25 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • It turns out that the other IP ranges are much easier to deal with, because there's much less editing, and what editing there has been is almost all unconstructive, so there is very little risk of collateral damage. I have blocked the ranges 83.122.128.0/19 and 83.123.142.0/25 for 6 months. JBW (talk) 22:03, 25 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
