Suspected sockpuppets

[edit]

See the ANI report on Diskyboy as well. Diskyboy got into an edit war on Black Sabbath (album) trying to categorize it as a blue rock band[1] and one on Solitude (Black Sabbath song)[2]. After a whole lot of warnings for edit warring, and with the user seeming pretty close to getting blocked, this IP[1] started doing the exact same things on Black Sabbath (album). Afterwords, Diskyboy made one more revert and then hasn't edited since.[3] The IP also didn't edit. Meanwhile, on Solitude (Black Sabbath song), another IP, [2] started continuing the edit war there. Finally, a third IP, [3], continued both edit wars for the sockmaster.

All seem to have very similar edit summaries as well. Me Da Wikipedian (talk) 21:22, 19 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Suspected sockpuppets

[edit]

ThePainkiller90 shares the same Diskyboy interest in genres related to Black Sabbath music topics. ThePainkiller90 asked at a reference desk whether they should be concerned about sockpuppetry.[4] They said their IP address talk page contains warnings about a sockpuppeteer named Diskyboy.[5] The only problem with that admission is that Diskyboy was not named at User_talk:73.30.109.234, the IP in question. It's clear that ThePainkiller90 already knew the name of the previous account.

ThePainkiller90 also reported their sockpuppet concern to the Help desk.[6]

No need for checkuser as this person already reported their IP address was the same. Binksternet (talk) 04:51, 27 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Adding Carnivore82 and SuperLuigi83 to the report just for the record. Carnivore82 was blocked after posting about Diskyboy at ANI. See Wikipedia:Administrators'_noticeboard/IncidentArchive1165#I'm being followed around by other users and don't appreciate it. SuperLuigi83 was renamed to Renamed user JsXy4fdNYGALz7 on June 14 but was blocked as a Diskyboy sock the next month.

Asking for checkuser now that the new user has added more smokescreen. Binksternet (talk) 20:36, 27 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hey, I'm not sure if ones allowed to comment on their own sockpuppet investigation, but I've been a lurker on Wikipedia for about a week, and read up on the rules in that time. I've only just found out what a sockpuppet is, but upon doing so, I got my IP Address from one of those IP finder sites and it matched up with this Diskyboy sockpuppet. I believe whoever this user was used a VPN because I live outside Philadelphia and have never edited for Wikipedia before. I thought about just editing as an IP, but made an account after reading a page on the benefits of creating an account. I only joined Wikipedia to help iut, and I'm so sorry my presence has caused such a rucuss. Again, I'm still new around here, so any help would be appreciated. So far, I already know how to do citations and add text, but I plan on making some new articles soon. Thanks for your concern, and sorry for this inconvenience. Wait, I'm still not exactly sure what a sockpuppet is. I know it has to do with multiple accounts and IP Adresses but is that like anyone in the IP range or just one person who uses multiple accounts? I'm not sure what to do in this situation, I've done everything I know how to, but I want to settle this as fast as possible so I can stop wasting your guys time. Sorry everyone, but I ask for help in revolving this. ThePainkiller90 (talk) 14:21, 27 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

If you look at the block log for the IP address, as ThePainkiller90 may theoretically have done, you see Abusing multiple accounts: Please see: w:en:Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/Diskyboy. It seems unlikely to me, though, that a novice user would be aware of our block logs.  --Lambiam 07:37, 27 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah pretty interesting that this connexion has been made already despite the boilerplate shibboleth {{Nc}}. Edit summaries seem a bit precocious (although this could be learnt through lurking), and the fact that the mainspace contributions jump straight into genre-warring is unpromising. There's other BEANSy stuff that is likely obvious to SPI volunteers. Folly Mox (talk) 13:08, 27 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Also like, 1 and then 2? I don't buy it. Folly Mox (talk) 13:21, 27 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I've been starting our with smaller genre edits but plan to expand and add articles more substantially in the furure, I'm just still warming up to how everything works. As you said, I've been lurking for about a week and have learned a lot in that time, but I'm still improving. Also, if you don't mind me asking, what is a boilerplate shibboleth, or BEANsy or SPI? Are they bad, or do I qualify as them or something. Please help, I'm not trying to make a scene. Sorry about this all 🙏 ThePainkiller90 (talk) 14:41, 27 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
For boilerplate, see Boilerplate text; in my usage above I use it to refer to "text automatically generated by a template". For shibboleth, see Shibboleth: a specific pronunciation (original meaning) or turn of phrase (extended meaning) that marks someone as part of a specific in-group.
I'm not aware of anyone other than myself who uses the terms in conjunction: it's something of an ironic phrase, since how could something generated automatically be used for differentiating in-group from out-group? Nevertheless sometimes people here seem to adopt wordings of templates as the "proper" way to express something. I should probably stop using the phrase.
For BEANS, see WP:BEANS, used here to refer to tells of sockpuppetry we'd prefer not to disclose publicly, which would help block-evading users avoid detection more skillfully. SPI is the venue we are currently at: Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations. Folly Mox (talk) 16:20, 27 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Ah okay, thanks for clearing that up. I've not used any pre-written text myself, nor have any intention of doing so, and again, am just here to fix up some things on rock and metal related articles. I'm not sure if any of these sockpuppets did work in similar fields, I haven't checked through all of their contributions yet, aside from Diskyboy, but as of now, I'd say you have the right to be suspicious, especially on the internet where lying is common place, but trust me, I'd not have publicly stated my IP Adress if I was trying to hide something. I've given all the information, I have nothing to hide and I'm here to help Wikipedia grow, not edit for an idealogy or any of that stuff. Hope this is helpful, and again, sorry about the situation.
