Suspected sockpuppets

Evidence submitted by Atama

I was notified of Jeangabin's edits based on a misplaced request for aid at the COI guideline talk page. The request was regarding a dispute at the WP Professional Wrestling Style Guide. The details of the content dispute aren't that important, what's important is that the IP above removed information in the style guide here, was reverted, removed it again, was reverted with a warning about WP:3RR, then Jeangabin appeared out of nowhere and reverted one final time.

The edit war ended there, with discussion initiated at the WP Professional Wrestling talk page. At that discussion the IP defended the edits and was unsupported by everyone but Jeangabin. The discussion concluded with the suggestion that Jeangabin and the IP may be the same person. I looked at the contributions of the two and it is fairly obvious they are. Jeangabin is essentially an SPA making the same contribution to one wrestling article after another, and the IP is making the same exact same edits. The content dispute regarding the wrestling style guide mentioned above look to be an attempt to justify hundreds of edits both Jeangabin and the IP have made to wrestling articles, and the consensus opposing Jeangabin would require the majority of their edits to be reverted in Wikipedia.

It seems obvious to me that Jeangabin is using sockpuppetry to get around the 3RR rule and to try to build a false consensus in a content dispute.

Another note: it looks like the misplaced COI request was written by Jeangabin, then removed by the IP (probably when Jeangabin realized that they had posted in the wrong place). Jeff G. restored the request, seeing it as one editor removing another's comment, not realizing that they were probably the same person undoing a mistake.

To Jeangabin and the IP, please see WP:BROTHER as to the claims you've made. And WP:MEAT as well, even if this really is a case of two brothers.

Indeed, my older brother edits under the Jeangabin name. I haven't any user name here on wikipedia so I and other memebers of my family use or could use the IP if they want to edit here. There is no secret. If you wanted an explanation, you should have ask me on the talk page 82.224.118.7 (talk) 06:30, 13 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

This IP can be used by a lot of people. If an editor don't want to use an user name you can't oblige him to do so. Jeangabin (talk) 17:06, 13 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
True, but a second registered account, with your brother's name would stop any confusion. As it is the IP is acting in a similar way to you and so creates the impression od Jeangabin editing, then logging out and editing as a puppet. See WP:DUCK. Also, as I'd linked WP:MEAT before, if your brother does register an additional account you should avoid editing in similar areas, and definitely need to not back each other up in edit wars and consensus discussions. What you've admitted to doing is still gaming the system, by recruiting your brother to give a false impression that an impartial editor shares your views. That combined with your extensive editing in opposition to the consensus established previously at WP:PW shows that you intend to be disruptive in your edits and I still think a block would be needed to prevent further disruption. -- Atama 20:28, 13 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

  • The issues at WP:PW was to do with cite episode template use, and from their editing patterns they both edit the move sections of wrestler ("In wrestling") and add move names using this template. User names cost nothing and if they were two different family members then they should have registered a second name rather than make similar edits and have it appear like Jeangabin was logging out to avoid 3RR.
