Suspected sockpuppets

[edit]

These usernames have consistently been engaging in identical edits in which the current Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, U.S. Army general Mark A. Milley is replaced by retired U.S. Air Force general David L. Goldfein across the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Joint Chiefs of Staff, and four-star officers page. For context, General Milley was an appointee of then-President Donald Trump in 2019, subverting expectations that Goldfein would be chairman instead.[1][2] This, including Milley's "reputation" as a political general and association with Trump due to the above, especially his unintentional involvement in the Donald Trump photo op at St. John's Church, mark him and his position as controversial.

Reversions ignoring this failed nomination, claiming that Goldfein did become CJCS are constantly readded after each removal of such an edit. Block logs of accounts show that the user in question was blocked for vandalism-only purposes, with account creation disabled.

Included here are different edits by:

I don't know whether this is useful to the case, but the "panjang" and "carlos" usernames here could be considered disruptive/offensive since they contain slurs in Indonesian (see here [15] [16]). I won't bring this to UAA since they're already blocked. Thanks. twotwofourtysix(My talk page and contributions) 11:36, 5 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Given that (as stated above) the user has a habit of returning every few weeks for the same edit pattern, there may be cause for a UAA report in the near future. Additionally, as a Malay speaker, I know all too well how offensive those usernames were, but they were blocked before I decided to lodge any UAA report. LemonJuice78 was edit blocked indefinitely for deliberately adding false information or improperly written citations on U.S. military-related pages (especially those on the U.S. Air Force). These usually took the form of large content additions to pages written in poor English, alongside defunct uses of WP:IMAGE labelling, captioning and sizing. When they were questioned on the incorrect edits, they failed to respond on their talk page or to any other form of communication initiated by others (including me) until they were edit blocked. Their appeal to the block was denied due to failing to address the problems with their edits and how they would take action to fix it. Admin Acroterion has described this user as a WP:NOTHERE user.

WarMachine77 began editing Wikipedia on 19 October 2021, but only three edits were done in October. With LemonJuice's latest edit being on 19 November 2021, the number of edits for WarMachine increased dramatically on that same date, performing edits of the same style to Larry D. Welch, Alexander Haig, Bernard W. Rogers and Donald Rumsfeld, pages which have extensive and reverted edits by LemonJuice78.

Making same type of WP:SEAOFBLUE edits and new images, as well as large content additions to pages in similar pattern to prior socks: David C. Jones, Larry D. Welch, Donald Rumsfeld, etc. User talk page conversation also reveals very similar speech patterns to that used by LemonJuice and WarMachine when faced with their respective sockpuppet investigations.

For this report, I bring up an interesting pattern. Before that, however, these user's naming patterns are very similar to that of earlier socks like Kontolpanjang, Carlosbabibangsat, and others, namely including rude Indonesian words like "Ngentot" (innuendo-related) and "tai anjing" (meaning dog excrement) as well as Milley, namely Mark Milley of which recent vandalism related to him and his position of Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff has been perpetrated.

Secondly, I request a possible merger of this and the ongoing investigation into LemonJuice78. This is because the edits made by the two currently active usernames - MilleyNgentot and MilleyTaiAnjing - match the editing patterns of LemonJuice and his socks, including to Air Force and Army-related pages such as Larry D. Welch, David C. Jones and Bernard W. Rogers, especially by changing image sizes of images uploaded by LemonJuice on Wikimedia Commons and adding galleries to pages in defiance of WP:GALLERY (edits from LemonJuice to this effect have been reverted at Richard Myers). At least one edit of MilleyTaiAnjing seems to have been solely to revert one of my own edits, a signal that his editing patterns may or may not be beginning to target me personally.

I urge further scrutiny into the various edit patterns so as to ascertain whether the above socks of Kontolpanjang are in any way related to LemonJuice78 and his socks. In the meantime, I have also reported the usernames to WP:UAA. Here are examples of the above socks' edits:

  • MilleyNgentot (1, 2, 3, 4)

Despite only beginning edits on 22 March, GeneralMcMahon's pattern matches those of LemonJuice's former socks (as well as a potential merger with the Kontolpanjang). To recap, this user tends to add improperly sourced (for example, from WorldCat rather than a book/article) extended and WP:SEAOFBLUE content to Defense Department-related pages such as Donald Rumsfeld, George Scratchley Brown and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. The same set of pages continue to be frequented by LemonJuice and his sock accounts.

Additionally, CheckUser GirthSummit has made an assessment on the identities of LemonJuice and his socks in relation to the Kontolpanjang investigation, and the current potential sock, GeneralMcMahon, also frequents Indonesian pages such as Nusa Dua. Kontolpanjang and several of his socks use Indonesian slurs as part of their usernames. This is added for completion's sake.

Relevant edits:

- To Young Turks: An image addition with size wikitext (311x311px) and excessively large WP:IMAGESIZE as well as comprehensive but inconcise image captions that conform to Lemon's prior sock patterns.

- Gallery and content edits to Nusa Dua

- To Donald Rumsfeld

- To George Scratchley Brown

- To Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff SuperWIKI (talk) 09:50, 24 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Similar edit patterns and addition of px images to U.S. military articles, particularly related to Air Force generals. Regular edits to imagefiles uploaded by Lemon's Wikimedia Commons account. Significant lull in edits between April and June, possibly to lower scrutiny from watchful editors.

Additionally, username contains words in Indonesia, namely "Kadal" for lizard and "Asli" for original, a common trend between the sockpuppet's usernames.

Would also add User:Milleybangsat to this report. His one edit involves editing the scale of one image to be 111x111px instead of 75px, a common style of images he adds. Also, "bangsat" is also in another sock's name, User:Carlosbabibangsat. SuperWIKI (talk) 07:44, 15 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Only one edit so far, but to a very recognisable page in term of the sock's edits, Larry D. Welch. It demonstrates the common 222x222px of image additions as well as inflated prose with poor English grammar usage. While more of a suspicion to me, SugaiKuneo seems to be a corrupted form for the Indonesian-Malay word sungai (river in English) and a local Indonesian eraser product.

I will admit that I was quite hasty to revert these edits in my exasperation, which resulted in offended and insulting retorts on the CJCS talk page and my talk page. I have chosen not to engage with them, since they already have a negative judgement of me from past edit reverts and no manner of reasonable counterpoints will help. However, the naming pattern, including the Indonesian taboo word "kontol" as well as the "name followed by number" username style, is apparent, as well as the frequent mis-citing of OCLC links and style of adding images (222x222px, etc.). That said, I feel that, whether due to lack of experience, edits in improper English (I honestly don't know if pointing that out would be prejudice or not) or not reading proper MOS and policy pages (including those on proper usernames), they may not have been given a proper hearing in their original account and probably are now resorting to personal attacks out of their own exasperation. I'm at a loss as to what to do now, along with this report. Not my call to make, but would strongly urge them to make their case in the "Comments by other users" section before this descends into further needless acrimony.

The name pattern with familiar Indonesian slurs ("kontol" for genitalia, "gue", "panjang") matches the usernames of several previous socks (Kontolpanjang, Carlosbabibangsat, etc.) Several familiar edits to United States Air Force generals, including creating a new page, Stephen M. Goldfein. However, otherwise, their edit style seems to have standardised and resembles vandalism much less - evidently they've leveled out on learning how to edit. Regardless, they still need to request admin assistance on their original account, and if this is a sock account, not having done so still disqualifies them from editing.

Sock is using Indonesian words in username relating to pests (belatung = maggots, cacing = worms), akin to past uses of slurs in usernames. Edits made are to familiar U.S. military articles with telltale signs of poor English and adding "px" parameters to newly added images.
