Suspected sockpuppets[edit]

WP:DUCK; first edit is restoring article created by socks, Rama Kirve. I have explained how this title is not useful and how it is eligible for G5, so please delete it too. I don't think we need CU for this one; but because of history, I assume you will want to look for more. Regards! Usedtobecool ☎️ 04:31, 26 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

  • There was another new account that edited Rama Kirve today which appeared to be a sock too. It edited random articles on either side to hide it but there was no reason it should have been at that article at that time. I don't remember the name but it should be at the top of that article's history. Usedtobecool ☎️ 12:48, 26 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • For the record, Sushilkumarshindemaha also appears to be a sock of this farm. Its edits were to an article edited by multiple other socks, but it's been deleted and because I worked on multiple such articles today, I don't remember which one it was. 25 December 2021[edit]

Suspected sockpuppets[edit]

After their added WP:BLP violations were removed from the list of Saini people (see revision history of that page) and the page got extended confirmed, the highly disruptive Saini sock master started disrupting the list of Yadavs and Gurjars to quickly gain the extended confirmed status and to prove a WP:POINT: see User talk:Anshsaini0304#Question and here. Now the suspected sock – who has registered just 5 days ago – has been disrupting the same lists with the same intent: see here for editor interaction with the sock master.

The sock master also wanted to move the list of Saini people to Saini (surname), so that they could restore all the previously removed BLP violations: see Talk:List_of_Saini_people#Moving_of_protection_settings_from_List_of_Saini_People_to_Saini(surname). And they cited the example of Yadav (surname) page, as the current list was under that title at that point in time. I opposed that move stating that the title of this list indicates that this is a list of people of the Saini community. And they got blocked for disruption. Now, to prove a WP:POINT, the suspect has moved the List of Yadavs to List of Yadav people: [1]. They have done the same pointy move at the List of Gurjars: [2]. In that discussion, I also suggested that the appropriate target for redirecting the list of Saini people would be Saini#Notable people, rather than Saini (surname). So, in other pointy edits, the suspected sock has blanked the list of Gurjars & reverted it to Gurjar#Notable gurjars: see [3] & [4].

As soon as they will become extended confirmed, their target will probably be the list of Saini people and Saini articles, just like what the sock master tried to do. So, behaviour wise, this is a WP:DUCK. Pinging SpacemanSpiff & GeneralNotability (as they blocked the sock master) and NinjaRobotPirate, who confirmed their previous socks. NitinMlk (talk) 21:24, 25 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

  • I planned to file two SPIs yesterday: the other one would have been against Alaonanda, who is an example of Thakor Sumant Sinhji Jhala's typical sock. But I got busy with some other stuff. That Koli sock master is using a large number of throwaway accounts nowadays, and generally, each one of them is used for a specific purpose. That's what resulted in my misjudgement. Anyway, thanks to NinjaRobotPirate for acting so quickly. - NitinMlk (talk) 19:29, 26 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

    • They were added after the case status was changed, so they weren't checked. People shouldn't really edit cases once the status has changed. It leads to confusion like this where nobody is quite sure what the status of the case is. Is there a CU request here? If so, it should be justified better than "they edited the same page". NinjaRobotPirate (talk) 07:04, 6 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

The edits before this diff I think are a cue that they may be sock as an off-wiki group because they both have been adding names. I've been watching this page for some months now and it's recently only that this and similar other pages are being edited so heavily in a similar manner. I think they all are some off-wiki group came here for some purpose. (I'm sorry if this wasn't enough and you feel my message unnecessarily increased your hardwork. I posted this 10 days ago. Then, went through some real-life ups and downs. Now, I had even forgotten I posted anything like this. But, I'm sure I had some strong reasons to doubt it back when I posted this message. •  Clerk note: Breaking this off from the above filing, since that one had already been resolved (check/block-wise) when the accounts were added.
Additional information needed. @Lightbluerain: Could you please provide some diffs showing similarity between these two accounts' edits and edits by Thakor Sumant Sinhji Jhala or their sox? The caste topic area tends to lead to very similar editing patterns, so it's not enough just to say that accounts edit the same pages. -- Tamzin[cetacean needed] (she/they) 07:43, 6 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • @Lightbluerain: Well I hope all is well in real life. Always important to put that first. The wiki will still be here, y'know? As to the SPI, like I said, it's a topic area that gets a lot of people's interest, and a lot of them edit in similar ways. So the fact that they're all adding people to that list doesn't give us enough for a check or a block. Furthermore, the diff you linked seems to show SHRVRA reverting a Thakor sock. Some sockmasters do edit-war with themselves either to disrupt or to throw off doubt, but I haven't seen evidence yet to suggest that this is that kind of case. no Closing without action, but without prejudice against a re-file if more concrete evidence emerges. • I agree with the report, but a CU is needed here, as this sockmaster has been using a large number of throwaway accounts. Note that one of the latest blocked socks was also redirecting/merging the lists of other castes, e.g. compare this & this edit of the above suspect with this & this edit of the sockpuppet. And like all the previous socks, they are editing with mobile using advanced mode. In fact, the list created by them is also similar to the list created and expanded by the confirmed socks. - NitinMlk (talk) 21:53, 24 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Suspected sockpuppets[edit]

  • The last batch of the sockpuppets was blocked on 26 December and the suspect was created 10 days later on 5 January. Like all the previous socks, they are editing with mobile using advanced mode. Their name is also similar to a couple of cofirmed socks: compare Drishti2021 with Drishtikonja and Drishti Luthra.
  • The Koli claim at Thakur (title) was added by the latest blocked sockpuppet using poor sources: [5]. And the Drishti2021 has reinstated it: [6].
  • Lots of previous socks have been reinstating Koli claim at Thakor, e.g. see [10], [11], [12], [13], etc. And Drishthi has done the same thing: [14].

Finally, the sock master has been using a large number of throwaway accounts. So a CU is necessary – pinging NinjaRobotPirate, as he ran the CU last time. NitinMlk (talk) 21:58, 24 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

  •  In progress - -- RoySmith (talk) 14:13, 27 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • From what current data I've got, Jigraj Ravidasia is  Likely to Drishti2021 and using some notes in cuwiki, those two are  Possilikely (a mix between possible and likely) to Thakor Sumant Sinhji Jhala. But we're dealing with big IP ranges here; IP range overlap really doesn't mean a heck of a lot in this part of the world (I don't think I'd be giving anything away if I just came out and said it was India), so  Inconclusive needs to be part of the story as well. FWIW, I compared them to the only two non-stale accounts in the archive (SHRVRA and Arshsangh) and they're  Unlikely to either. All of these accounts geolocate to the same general area of the country, so it wouldn't be surprising that there's common points of view on such a popular topic as caste/clan assignments.  Behavioural evidence needs evaluation -- RoySmith (talk) 14:36, 27 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • There's new data since I looked at this last. I can now say that Jigraj Ravidasia is  Confirmed to Drishti2021. I'll call them both suspected to Thakor Sumant Sinhji Jhala. -- RoySmith (talk) 21:56, 7 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]

  • Colageed tried WP:AHIJACK with this move: [17]. Now Drishti2021 has made the same move using the same edit summary: [18].
  • Babar Deva has been created multiple times by the previous socks: [19]. Now Colageed has created it again. I cannot view the previous versions, but they should be compared with the latest one, esp. the sources and the citing style. NitinMlk (talk) 22:07, 3 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Suspected sockpuppets[edit]

This edit [20] is suggestive: it restores content originally added by a previous sock [21], and despite the edit summary (not all of it is a revert) it also alters the lede to present a very common Indian surname as belonging to the Koli social group, which previous socks were obsessed about.

I'm requesting CU because previous checks have regularly flushed out large flocks of socks, and I'm also seeing in recent months a lot of Koli-related editing by a large number of new users, including a lot of IPs (I can provide some examples if that's going to help the checks). I had absent-mindedly started this SPI at Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/Anshsaini0304 on 4 April, but have now moved it here.Uanfala (talk) 23:11, 5 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]

  • I was going to start an SPI for this and the user above, the editing/reference style, WP:CASTE POV and the interaction timeline are all that one needs to take a look at to confirm that these are the same user be they IP hopping or otherwise. I would go further and ask for bans on the IP ranges this puppeteer is using to stop the uneding disruption (one of the ranges has already been blocked). Gotitbro (talk) 04:04, 6 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • I too am seeing a lot of IPs pushing same castecruft pov on some pages, e.g. On Saurashtra (region), one ip added some content in the lead from non historic sources [22], when i removed it, it was readded by another ip [23], when I reverted it again, this time editor "Drishti2021" reverted my edit without any explanation [24], in my opinion Drishti2021 is sockmaster, i left notice of socking at his/her talk page but did not receive any reply. I have seen these similar dynamic ip (106.xxx.xx.xx) (223.xxx.xx.xx) making the same changes as Drishti2021 on other pages as well like Shankersinh Vaghela, Idar State, Darbar (title), List of Koli people, List of Koli titles, clans and subcastes etc, I agree with Gotitbro that these IPs after being checked for socking, should be range blocked. They are constantly doing castecruft pov on multiple pages. Sajaypal007 (talk) 07:14, 7 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I tagged Koli piracy in India, created by a previous sockpuppet, for G5 deletion a few days ago, and it was duly deleted. Bachchanji has created the article again, this time with the title Koli piracy in Gujarat, but, if my memory serves me well, it is word-for-word identical to the previously deleted version, which strongly suggests that this is the same person. Other edits also show an interest in Koli-related topics (see [25] and [26]), and I see that this account was created just twelve hours after the most recent blocks in this case. Given the archives, a sleeper check might be helpful. Extraordinary Writ (talk) 06:09, 17 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]

The cats created by the user (Category:Rajput princely states of Chhattisgarh, Category:Rajput princely states of Rajasthan, Category:Brahmin princely states, Category:Rajput princely states of Madhya Pradesh, Category:Gurjar princely states, Category:Rajput princely states of Gujarat are in line with another dubious caste cat Category:Koli princely states created by previous socks.

  • There is no point in a CheckUser request, as CheckUsers won't connect an IP address to accounts. The available evidence about the new IP address consists of one edit and WHOIS information about the IP address. There is not enough there to be anywhere near certain one way or the other, but in my opinion it is slightly more likely that this is not the same person. I am therefore closing this without any action. JBW (talk) 18:40, 16 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Exact same Koli (caste) POVPUSH (covered under WP:CASTE sanctions) as previous socks and master. Asking for a CU to further confirm and check for sleepers. Gotitbro (talk) 14:48, 21 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

  • The abuse we have here is not just limited to enwiki, I am recently coming from filing ANI reports on Wikidata and Hindi Wikipedia for the same issue; the latter of which is even looking to adopt policies similar to our WP:CASTE sanctions. In light of this we need to set a strict exemplar against abuse of the WP system. My first suggestion would be, as suggested below, a more broader Israel and Palestine sanctions-based application of the CASTE-sanctions as for: topic areas covered (where not just caste pages but any caste-based additions are considered), page protection (especially with respect to faster EPP grant on repeatedly disrupted pages), quicker blocks on repeat offenders and a more swift consideration of violations (as for bad faith after due good faith was given).
Caste based POVPUSHERs and abusers, spare none; even gods are not spared from the attachment of the caste of their liking to such articles (caste additions to Hindu deity articles should be a bad faith presumption from the get go). Anyone repeatedly inserting a singular caste to bios, caste and other articles should be suspect as a disrupter and a likely sock, with quicker editing restrictions that follow. The India-related topic space (which witnesses the most disruption by far) should be wholly covered by the more restrictive sanctions and further for other South Asia-related articles where such abuse occurs.
As for this specific LTA (a multi-device, multi-locational, dynamic IP one), one that has issued death and rape threats including against me, a definitive approach is needed to restrict its activities. 1) Firstly any Koli-based new page creations are most likely created by this network as has been the case ever since it has been active; and as such there should be a denial, i.e., a restriction on Koli article/cat creation by new users and WP:NPPs should reject such articles and an SPI should be filed here for the same for accounts/IPs who have created multiple such pages. 2) The second thing would be to perma EPP the articles repeatedly targetted by this network (a lot of them Gujarat and Maharashtra subtopics). Both of these should be covered by the above broader CASTE based sanctions if implemented. Gotitbro (talk) 20:55, 3 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

  • Gotitbro thank you for the diffs. I ran a check, but the best I can say is  Possible, and it's really such a generic match it's almost meaningless. My recommendation is to ignore the CU result and handle this one on the behavioral evidence alone. RoySmith (talk) 00:00, 28 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

  • I took a look at the above accounts (STREPCRAW and Naagin9) as well as Raja Hassan Khan Khanzada and the other accounts listed at this recent NPP report about mass creation of Koli articles (AUDENMAYAS and Fatteh Singh Bais along with Raja Hassan Khan Khanzada). All these accounts are clearly sock/meatpuppets but it is impossible for me to say whether they are all operated by TSSJ or by some other sockmaster(s) active in the Koli area. See this analysis by GeneralNotability to get an idea of the scale and complexity of the problem of grouping the socks even with CU tools.
Frankly, it is pretty ridiculous to have to deal with each sock creation individually and spend hours trying to get definitive CU/behavioral evidence matching a sock with a particular sockmaster in this area when it would take the sockmaster(s) a fraction of that time to create fresh new accounts and resume their activity unabated. IMO, we need to extend WP:GSCASTE to, by default, forbid non-extended confirmed editors from editing or creating articles related to South Asian castes/clans/tribes/... (similar to WP:PIA) since the current system of dealing with the disruption piecemeal through SPI and RFPP is not working.
Pinging @RoySmith, Ponyo, and Gotitbro: in case they have a better suggestion to deal with the acute issue of these particular accounts or the chronic problem overall. Abecedare (talk) 19:38, 3 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Abecedare: When the disruption becomes this pronounced, in my experience its most efficient to just lock it down with liberal blockings and protections. Ages ago, when the Morning277 meat socks were prolific, their block appeals always focused on the fact that they weren't the same individual and my standard reply was that it just doesn't matter. Same edits, same advocacy = same result (i.e. a block). -- Ponyobons mots 20:22, 3 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the input Ponyo. A block/protect/G5 spree coming up. Will note "Koli sockpuppet" in the block notices and tag the userpages with TSSJ as the presumptive sockmaster so that anyone interested has a trail to this SPI. Cheers. Abecedare (talk) 20:43, 3 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
OK. Done blocking and deleting the new creations though edits to existing articles may still need to be reverted. In the process of deleting a few dozen articles created by these accounts, I grew increasingly comfortable that TSSJ is indeed their sockmaster since there was clear coordination between the named accounts and likely TSSS IPs and some of the articles were recreations of previous ones created by known TSSJ socks (I have salted such pages that have undergone multiple G5 deletions).
@Gotitbro: Largely agree with you. While many of the proposed steps will need community discussion, if there are any related pages that you would like to see ECP protected under GSCASTE just list them on my talkpage. Tagging this case for closure. Abecedare (talk) 22:02, 3 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

The user appears only to have registered to move the previously G5-deleted pages Koli rebellions and Koli piracy from draftspace, where the articles were created by an IP, to mainspace. Prior to that they moved their userpage to Talk:Pilla Pilania which might have been a test to see if they are technically able to move pages. —Alalch E. 01:33, 31 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I'm adding to that the Koli rebellions creator IP.—Alalch E. 19:48, 31 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Vanamonde93: I find it indicative that the article is a copy of the deleted article, which I checked using the Internet Archive. This points to the interest not being generic, because it is not only about the topic as such, but about causing this exact page to exist as a Wikipedia article. The page did not see subsequent edits, meaning that the creator is satisfied with the page as-is, and the account was not used after the three-minute period during August 27.—Alalch E. 01:30, 10 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

  • information Administrator note The IP and the account named above are clearly the same person based on behavior, but the account registered afterward, and I see no evidence of deception; if AFC procedures are being violated, that's not a matter for SPI as such. @Alalch E.:, do you have evidence of a link to the sockmaster besides a generic interest in this caste? Vanamonde (Talk) 01:18, 10 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • information Administrator note @Alalch E.: Thank you, I had missed the deleted history. That seals the deal; it's identical in content. I'm blocking the account, and deleting the pages under CSD#G5. The IPs are within a blocked range. Normally I would tag for CSD and let another admin review, but we've wasted enough time on this nonsense, as Abecedare observed last time. • The combination of the nature of the editing and the fact that this IP address lies in a range known to have been used by this editor makes it pretty certain, and checking the editing history of the range 2409:40D6:3F:F38D:8000:0:0:0/48 mskes it even more certain; it is clear that at least the substantial majority, and probably all, of the editing from that IP range is this person, so I shall block the range and look into possible reverting and deleting. JBW (talk) 17:30, 12 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Further investigation shows that most of the editing from the larger range 2409:40D6:30:0:0:0:0:0/44 over quite a long period has been this editor, so I intend to block there too. I am in the process of checking the history in more detail, to decide what length of block is reasonable. Unfortunately, however, this range is still only a small part of a larger range with extensive known block-evasion by this person, but blocking the whole range would risk far too much collateral damage. sock of User:Thakor Sumant Singh Jhala and User:Jarange Patil Saheb ==> Tulsi Bairwa [46] He/she is moving so many pages with the same edit summaries as other all-related socks did before he must be stopped, and all his page moves should be recalled. Even this sock and the same IP range both made edits to the same pages in the same period of time. Sock_1 Used:Jarange Patil Saheb was blocked in November. Sock_2 Tulsi Bairwa is moving many pages with the same edit summaries as the previous Sock_1 [47], Sock_2 [48]. His/her edits also overlap [49] with another blocked sock of Thakor Sumant Singh Jhala (IMFWHO[50]). Sock_3 User:IMFWHO made the same kind of edit at List of Charans Uzer:IMFWHO[51], Uzer:Tulsi Bairwa [52]. IMFWHO made eleven edits at page List of Charans and Tulsi Bairwa made six edits [53] They both mostly removed resources, and with the same edit summaries, they were unsourced, not reliable sources, etc. Tulsi Bairwa's edits also overlap with another suspected sock. Uzer:Sanatanraaj [54] I think they have more slipper or newly created accounts, mostly created in the last 1 or 2 months, so CU is necessary.

However, they have also edited from another country that I haven't seen before with a different UA. I suspect there is account sharing going on as the IPs do not appear to be proxies and it would not be plausible to travel between these countries in the given timeline.
  • Vajinder Shekhawat has only edited from the "other country", where they share a range with Akshay Rotela.
  • In addition, the following accounts are  Highly likely to Akshay Rotela via IPs in the "other country" and are engaging in similar caste-related editing:
See for example, the admin/CU comments here and here. This would be consistent with Spicy's suspicion of account sharing between these sock-drawers and is worth keeping in mind for future SPIs related to any of these accounts.
