Most Popular Wikipedia Articles of the Week (June 21 to 27, 2020)
[edit]Prepared with commentary by Rebestalic and igordebraga
A lot of articles now related to George Floyd and African-American rights appeared this week, as well as some Netflix productions and games from the The Last of Us series by game developer Naughty Dog, plus some other unrelated entries.
Rank Article Class Views Image Notes/about 1 Bubba Wallace 1,156,946 It seems that American NASCAR racer Bubba Wallace is currently popular in the news for many reasons; them including the discovery of a noose in Wallace's garage stall, as well as his rather heated exit from a video game simulation of a motor race. It's worth noting that he's one of the only, if not the only, African-American race drivers in all NASCAR, which is why the noose is a big deal. 2 The Last of Us Part II 948,138 This PlayStation 4 exclusive, featuring the return of Ellie and Joel in a post-apocalyptic United States, has already become a best-seller, with 4 million copies in the first weekend alone. 3 Sushant Singh Rajput 927,970 Still well-positioned in the list is the Bollywood star who took his own life. 4 Death of Elijah McClain 917,613 The current Black Lives Matter social outcry made Colorado Governor Jared Polis to order the reexamination of this crime from last year, where a 23-year-old African-American massage therapist was killed after an encounter with police while walking home. 5 COVID-19 pandemic 785,442 This world event has now caused the deaths of half a million, and the infection of over ten million. That's more people than the whole populations of some countries... 6 Deaths in 2020 738,121 Everyone dies someday. 7 365 Days (2020 film) 736,731 In spite of being torn apart by everyone - even recommendations are like "it's bad, but watch it!" - the "Polish 50 Shades of Grey" (or "Stockholm syndrome in Warsaw") is still popular, if only for being the closest thing to porn on Netflix. 8 Ken Miles 531,502 For some better movie-related content, one of the main characters of Ford v Ferrari, which won two Oscars and had its television premiere on HBO. 9 Steve Bing 528,098 An American businessman who founded Shangri-La Entertainment and had a son with Elizabeth Hurley, Bing jumped to death from his apartment at the age of 55, reportedly being very depressed in these social isolation days (#5). 10 The Undertaker 466,366 After 30 years in the professional wresling's business, Mark William Calaway has hinted at a possible retirement, in the last episode of the appropriatedly titled show Undertaker: The Last Ride. 11 Donald Trump 455100 Donald Trump is a rather polarising figure when it comes to opinion. He is the 45th and current President of the United States, and is probably here because of the upcoming 2020 United States Presidential Election, as well as a lot of media controversy regarding his actions during a time of strong COVID-19 presence in the US. 12 Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga 450,105 Netflix again gave fans of something screwed over by the pandemic (#5) a replacement, after a Michael Jordan documentary when basketball had halted: the Eurovision Song Contest was cancelled? Watch the comedy where Will Ferrell and Rachel McAdams (pictured) are two Icelandic musicians who eventually fulfill their dream to reach said competition! Even if the jokes are hit-or-miss and the script has some problems, the flashy musical numbers are still very present. 13 Juneteenth 429,656 This was the day when the last slaves in the US were freed (June 19, 1865). 14 Aunt Jemima 415,135 Aunt Jemima is an American breakfast food company that has recently come under the spotlight for announcing a logo restructure that will ultimately make references to African-American stereotypes (in this case, the African-American 'Mammy' archetype) vanish away, or become less obvious, in light of the death of George Floyd. 15 Dark (TV series) 409,704 The third (and final) season of this German-language Netflix series was released on the 17th of June this year. Dark is described in its respective Wikipedia page as a 'Science fiction thriller', and has a plot that revolves around the disappearance of a child and time-travel. It appears that critically, Dark fares well. 16 Black Lives Matter 407,374 I've seen various proxies of Black Lives Matter as well as Black Lives Matter itself been described as everything from 'revolutionary' to 'a hate group'. Whatever your own view, Black Lives Matter has proven themselves over the years to be an adamant supporter of African-American peoples' rights (especially relevant in the aftermath of the death of George Floyd). 17 Shaun King 404458 This supporter of Black Lives Matter (#16) has recently appeared in the news for advocating the toppling of Jesus statues (presumably because they depict Jesus as a White person). Apparently, he's received death threats too. 18 Shooting of Breonna Taylor 395822 From what I've seen, this incidence is usually regarded as an example of police misconduct towards African-American people. 19 Capitol Hill Autonomous Zone 392423 This was essentially what happened when some George Floyd protesters occupied the Seattle neighbourhood of Capitol Hill, and declared it an autonomous zone; that is, an area that governs itself. Seattle police had managed to clear Capitol Hill of occupant protesters by the first of July this year. 20 Joel Schumacher 387,632 For some movie and comic book fans, this former fashion designer turned filmmaker was only the guy who committed Batman & Robin to the world. But Joel Schumacher, who died at 80, should not be held up only for the cinematic low point of The Dark Knight, given his diversified filmography with some highlights, including Falling Down, Phone Booth and The Client. 21 The Last of Us 382140 #2 wouldn't exist without the original, released in 2013 for the PlayStation 3 and with a higher definition version on the PS4 the following year. 22 Andrew Jackson 374531 Given his stance against abolitionists and such, depictions of the seventh President of the United States have been targeted in the racial protests, who even tried to topple a statue of his near the White House. 23 Liverpool F.C. 374195 This British football team won this season's Premier League for the first time in about thirty years. 24 The Sinner (TV series) 373129 A few months after ending on the USA Network, the third season of this crime drama show starring Bill Pullman has hit Netflix. 25 Father's Day 346,864 Because why not? In most cases, your father is, or will eventually be, a cause for thankfulness and pride in yourself. If he's not, then oh dear. Father's day, from what I've read, originated in the city of Spokane, Washington in 1909; It is now celebrated in one variation or another in more than a hundred countries.
Exclusions
[edit]- This list excludes the Wikipedia main page, non-article pages (such as redlinks), and anomalous entries (such as DDoS attacks or likely automated views). Since mobile view data became available to the Report in October 2014, we exclude articles that have almost no mobile views (5–6% or less) or almost all mobile views (94–95% or more) because they are very likely to be automated views based on our experience and research of the issue.
