This page is part of the WikiProject on Football and is intended to be used as a guide to how you best categorise articles related to association football. These are the over 30 categories presently located directly under Category:Association football, the top category of the project. The bold v to the left of each category takes you to the subheading of that category.

Association football academies

All football academies and youth systems should be placed directly under this category.

Association football clubs

[edit]

This category should only contain sub-categories named in the standard Category:Countrian [football/soccer] clubs format (except for a few cases due to problems with that format). In each of these sub-categories, all clubs from that country should be placed. The sub-categories may contain more categories on teams having their own categories.

Association football competitions

This category should only contain sub-categories named in the standard Category:Countrian [football/soccer] competitions format (except for a few cases due to problems with that format). In each of these sub-categories, all club competitions in that country should be placed, if not placed in its own sub-category. There may also be a (defunct) sub-category for competitions not played any more. There are also a few special categories for international competitions, national cups and premier leagues.

Association football by country

Extensive category collecting everything related to a specific country from all the other various categories.

Association football culture

[edit]

Everything related to football and its culture should be placed in this category, or any of its sub-categories. Movies, books and TV series related to football, fan culture, casuals, songs and so on. See also the Association football media category further down on this page.

Association football governing bodies

All national governing bodies of football should be placed directly under this category.

History of association football

[edit]

Everything related to the history of football should be placed in this category.

Laws of association football

[edit]

Everything related to the laws of football should be placed directly under this category. Many articles fit both under this and the Association football terminology category further down on this page.

This category should only contain sub-categories named in the standard Category:Countrian [football/soccer] [managers/coaches] format (except for a few cases due to problems with that format). In each of these sub-categories, all managers from that country should be placed.

National association football teams

Articles on national teams are located under their continental sub-category, or under the women's category if fitting.

Association football organisations

All organizations and companies related to football should be placed in this category, for governing bodies, see the Football (soccer) governing bodies category further up on this page.

Association football players

Players should be placed in their respective country's sub-category named in the standard Category:Countrian [footballers/soccer players] format and in the fitting position sub-category. They may also be placed in a club-specific or competition-specific sub-category if one exists. Female players are placed directly under their category. The football knights category is for players or managers knighted for their contributions to football.

All articles dealing with records or statistics should be placed here.

Association football referees

[edit]

All referees should be placed directly under this category until there are enough of them to start making sub-categories.

Association football seasons

This category should only contain sub-categories named in the standard Category:Seasons in Countrian in [football/soccer] format. Each sub-category should contain the seasonal football articles of the country.

Association football tactics and skills

All articles on player or team tactics and skills should be placed directly under this category. For ordinary terms and situations of the game, see Association football terminology further down on this page.

Association football terminology

All articles on specific words relating to football should be placed directly under this category. Many articles fit both under this and the Football (soccer) laws category further up on this page. Player pitch positions should be placed in the sub-category.

Association football trophies and awards

All awards given to players, managers or clubs, which are decided by polls or panels of judges should be placed directly under this category. Sub-categories may be created to contain awards from specific countries or leagues, or to contain players that have won the award. For trophies won in the course of playing competitive matches in a tournament or league, see Association football competitions.

Association football variants

Category used for articles on the different variants of football present in the world. If enough articles on a subject exist, a sub-category might be needed.

Association football venues

Stadiums used for football should be placed either directly under this category or in any of the nation-specific sub-categories. These sub-categories should be named in the standard Category:[Football/soccer] venuesin Country format. Some special sub-categories exist for various types of competitions the venues have hosted or are able to host.

Women's association football

[edit]

Category used for articles specific to women's football. Self explaining categories, no need for more sub-categories before there are more articles on the subject. This category needs more work. Should football and women's football categories overlap, should women's football clubs be listed under both the normal club category and the women's club category, or should there be separate categories for all cases?

Association football by year

[edit]

This category should only contain sub-categories named in the standard Category:yyyy in football (soccer) format. In each of these sub-categories, all year-specific articles on competitions played during the course of the year should be placed. The sub-categories may contain more categories on year-specific events having its own category.

Association football stubs

Nothing should be placed in any of these categories by hand. They are used only when adding a football stub template to an article.
