On June 30, 1916, the date of valuation, the carrier owned and operated a line of railroad extending from Stokesland, Va., to Stuart, Va., a distance of 69.277 miles, with a branch extending from Leakesville Junction, Va., to Leakesville, N. C., 7.672 miles, and 0.144 mile in Danville, Va., a total of 77.093 miles. It also owned 12.295 miles of yard tracks and sidings. All of the railroad had been acquired by purchase.

Corporate history.—The carrier was incorporated in Virginia under the general laws of 1887, for the purpose of acquiring and operating the property of the Danville and New River Railroad Company. Incorporation was effected by J. Willcox Brown, who, as representative of a reorganization committee composed of bondholders of the latter, purchased the property at a foreclosure sale on August 27, 1890. The property, rights, and franchises were formally conveyed on January 9, 1891, by a deed executed by Berryman Green, special commissioner in foreclosure proceedings, to J. Willcox Brown, who, by virtue of the above law, thereupon organized a corporation styled the Danville and Western Railway Company, to which corporation title to the property passed without further conveyance. Organization of the carrier was perfected on January 9, 1891.

The carrier also acquired, after foreclosure, the property, rights, and franchises of the Danville, Mocksville and Southwestern Railroad Company, by deed dated March 1, 1899.

The principal corporate office of the carrier is at Danville, and its principal accounting office in Washington, D. C.

The detailed facts as to the development of the fixed physical property are given in Appendix 2.
