The railroad of the Mississippi & Western Railroad Company, hereinafter called the carrier, is a single-track, standard-gage, steam railroad, located in the southeastern section of the State of Mississippi. The main line extends easterly from Stevens to Fouke, a distance of 11.466 miles. The company also owns 0.403 mile of yard tracks and sidings. Its road thus embraces 11.869 miles of all tracks owned and used. The railroad is located on leased right of way.

In addition to its owned property, the carrier leases from the Hutchinson–Moore Lumber Company, certain rail and track fastenings, a building used for a waiting room and motor-car house, and equipment.

This is an industrial railroad. The carrier is controlled jointly by the Ingham Lumber Company and the Hutchinson–Moore Lumber Company. The latter owns a large sawmill at Fouke, Miss., that is served by this railroad.

CORPORATE HISTORY

The carrier was incorporated February 19, 1917, under the general laws of Mississippi, to construct, own, and operate a railroad extending from Stevens to Fouke, Miss. The date of its organization was not ascertained.

DEVELOPMENT OF FIXED PHYSICAL PROPERTY

The road owned, 11.466 miles, extending from Stevens to Fouke, Miss., was acquired by purchase in 1917, from the George W. Fouke Lumber Company. Records obtained indicate that prior to the incorporation of the carrier, the George W. Fouke Lumber Company purchased certain timber lands and rights, including the right to construct a railroad, for the transportation of its lumber, on a roadbed formerly used by the Gilchrist–Fordney Lumber Company. Accordingly, the road, subsequently acquired by the carrier was constructed by S. H. Hindman for the George W. Fouke Lumber Company during the period February to November, 1917. The carrier reports it owns no lands.
