The railroad of the New River, Holston and Western Railroad Company, hereinafter called the carrier, is a single-track standard-gauge steam railroad, located in the western part of Virginia. The owned mileage extends southwesterly from Narrows to Suiter, Va., a distance of 34.611 miles. The carrier also owns and uses 1.973 miles of yard tracks and sidings. Its road thus embraces 36.584 miles of all tracks.

Introductory

[edit]

The accounting records of the carrier prior to February 14, 1903, were incomplete. The information contained in this report was obtained from available accounting records. The carrier is a corporation of the State of Virginia, having its principal office at Roanoke, Va. The carrier is controlled by the Norfolk and Western Railway Company through ownership of all but seven shares of its capital stock. On the other hand, the carrier, itself, does not control any other common-carrier corporations. The property of the carrier has been operated by its own organization during its entire life.

Corporate History

[edit]

The carrier was incorporated by act of Virginia, approved January 15, 1900.
