The Tampa & Jacksonville Railway Company, hereinafter called the carrier, is a corporation originally chartered under the general laws of Florida, June 6, 1906, and renewed, under special legislative authority of February 27, 1907, as the consolidated form of this original corporation and the Gainesville & Gulf Railway Company. The principal office of the carrier is at Gainesville, Fla. The carrier owned and operated on valuation date a single-track standard-gauge steam railroad, carrying light traffic, and located entirely in the northern part of Florida. The line of the carrier extends from Sampson City on the line of the Georgia Southern and Florida Railway Company in an irregular southerly direction, across the Seaboard Air Line Railway at Gainesville, to its southern terminus at Emathla. The carrier owns no terminals of importance.

Corporate history.—The carrier's corporate origin was in the Gainesville, Rocky Point & Micanopy Railway Company. This was chartered in Florida March 31, 1884, but was succeeded before it constructed any line by the Gainesville & Gulf Railway Company, chartered under the general laws of Florida June 22, 1895. The Gainesville & Gulf Railway Company built most of the present property and then gave way, by special act of the Florida Legislature, of February 25, 1907, to a corporate consolidation with the carrier, which had been incorporated under the general laws of Florida on the preceding June 6, 1906. This consolidated corporation retained the name of the carrier, succeeded to the property of the Gainesville & Gulf Railway Company, and completed it to its present state. CORPORATE HISTORY AND DEVELOPMENT OF PROPERTY

The carrier's corporate origin was in the Gainesville, Rocky Point & Micanopy Railway Company, which was chartered in Florida, March 31, 1884. This company was succeeded before it constructed any road by the Gainesville & Gulf Railway Company which was chartered under the general laws of Florida, June 22, 1895. The Gainesville & Gulf Railway Company constructed various sections of the present property as indicated below, but whether by its own forces or contractors is not known. Construction by sections was as follows: The central section from Gainesville to Micanopy, amounting to about 17 miles, in 1895; an extension southward from Micanopy to Fairfield, amounting to about 11 miles, in 1899; an extension northward from Gainesville to Sampson City, the present northern terminus, a distance of about 20 miles, in 1902.

On June 6, 1906, the original Tampa & Jacksonville Railway Company was incorporated under the general laws of Florida to take over the property of the Gainesville & Gulf Railway Company. On February 25, 1907, special legislative action completed this consolidation and retained the name of the carrier. This carrier constructed, through contractors, the remaining section of the present property from Fairfield to Emathla, the southern terminus, and opened it in 1910.
