The railroad of the Tennessee Railroad Company, hereinafter called the carrier, is a single-track standard-gauge steam railroad, located in northeastern Tennessee. The main line extends southerly from Oneida to a point about 3 miles beyond Rosedale, a distance of 41.222 miles, with a branch line extending from a connection with the main line at Smoky Junction southerly to Newland, aggregating 46.209 miles of first main track. The carrier also owns 14.329 miles of yard tracks and sidings. Its road thus embraces 60.538 miles of all tracks owned and used. An extension of the line beyond Rosedale was under construction on date of valuation. The carrier is a reorganization of the Tennessee Railway Company whose property had been sold at foreclosure on February 14, 1918. On June 29, 1918, the purchasers of the property adopted the name Tennessee Railroad Company for the new company to be incorporated for the purpose of acquiring the property, and although a board of directors was elected on that date the carrier was not actually incorporated and did not take over the property until after date of valuation. However, the property has been classified as owned and used by the carrier in this report. Further information will be found in Appendix 2.

CORPORATE HISTORY

The Tennessee Railway Company was incorporated May 17, 1904, under the general laws of the State of Tennessee, for the purpose of constructing and operating a railroad from Oneida, Tenn., to the headwater of New River, together with branch lines. The date of organization of the Tennessee Railway Company has not been determined. The property, rights, and franchises of the Tennessee Railway Company were sold at foreclosure on February 14, 1918, after receivership begun July 1, 1913, and the property, with exception of about 7 miles of partially completed road, was surrendered on February 15, 1918, to J. N. Baker, trustee for the purchasers. Bird M. Robinson, the receiver, remained in charge of the partially completed road until March 28, 1918, when J. N. Baker was appointed receiver in charge of the uncompleted construction work, and he was so acting on date of valuation. On June 29, 1918, the name Tennessee Railroad Company was chosen by the purchasers for a new company to be chartered as the successor of the Tennessee Railway Company and a board of directors was elected, but such company has not been chartered nor the plan of reorganization consummated on date of valuation.
