Location and General Description of Property

The railroad of The Winchester and Strausburg Railroad Company, hereinafter called the Winchester and Strausburg, is a single-track line, located entirely within the State of Virginia and extends from Winchester to Strausburg Junction, a distance of 18.918 miles, with several small branches. The property forms a part of the line between Harpers Ferry, W.Va., and Lexington, Va., and aggregates 19.237 miles of road.

Introductory

The Winchester and Strausburg is a corporation of Virginia, having its principal office at Winchester, Va. The available accounting records were established as of June 30, 1901, upon data taken from the records of the Baltimore and Ohio for a period beginning August 1892.

It is controlled by the Baltimore and Ohio through ownership of capital stock. The records do not indicate that this company controls any common-carrier corporation.

The property was operated by the Baltimore and Ohio from date of completion to December 31, 1917. Since January 1, 1918, it has been operated by the United States Railroad Administration as part of the Baltimore and Ohio system.

Corporate History

The Winchester and Strausburg was incorporated under a special act of Virginia, passed April 23, 1867, for the purpose of building a railroad from Winchester to Strausburg, Va., about 19 miles. It was organized July 8, 1868.

Development of Fixed Physical Property

The owned road, 19.237 miles, was acquired by construction between the date of organization and July 1, 1870, and was opened for operation by the Baltimore and Ohio under agreement dated July 28, 1870, effective July 1, 1870.

Leased Railway Property

The entire property is leased to the Baltimore and Ohio as stated in the report on that company.
