David L. Cook, Grammy Award Claims and Canyouhearmenow

Canyouhearmenow (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · blacklist hits · AbuseLog · what links to user page · count · COIBot · Spamcheck · user page logs · x-wiki · status · Edit filter search · Google · StopForumSpam)

Very few of the numerous references added to this page, which there are many, appear to actually support the statements of facts they are meant to support.

And I totally question the notability or importance of the many "so-called awards" this article claims, ie. Country Gospel Music Association, International Christian County Awards, etc.

Numerous references to self produced web sites such as CD Baby, Artist own Website, MP3 pages, etc. gives the illusion of 30+ references, which in fact is very misleading. These all become very circular and support very little in this article.

IMO... Canyouhearmenow appears to have gone to great lengths to establish a Grammy Award for David_L._Cook where none exist. [Here]

On another page [Here] he claims the database that wiki editors search online is not complete. I called NARAS. Every recognized Grammy winner is in the online database - period. To exclude any recipient of their prestigious recognition would in their words "be a travesty." David_L._Cook is not in this database anywhere. Draw your own conclusions. But I can't find a verifiable source online (or elsewhere) that this artist has ever won a Grammy in his name. Yomyman (talk) 16:18, 4 October 2010 (UTC)

I am not sure that I appreciate the tone of this editor! I have not manufactured anything. I found information at one point that pointed to this and now it is gone. I will be glad to rewrite anything I wrote but to accuse an editor of manufacturing information I believe is a bit much. The reference to the Grammy was an article that I found at one point that referred to Cook as the youngest recipient. I am unsure as to how that information was released but I can assure you that I will research it and mend any edits I have made to reference it. However, I can tell you that awards such as The Country Gospel Music Awards and the International Country Gospel Music Awards are honors that this subject has indeed won! I have verified these on the associations websites. I can also inform you that Cook has indeed won several Emmy Awards as well as Telly Awards per the academy's web pages. So, I think this is more of an error in sourcing than it is someone manufacturing or trying to create a press soapbox. --Canyouhearmenow 20:55, 4 October 2010 (UTC)
I just completed a run through of the references and I agree that some of them no longer point to the information that once supported the cite. I will look for other sources but one should understand that in many cases the sources and cites change. Editors cannot stay ontop of things they added a long time ago. I will do research to find sources. If I cannot find them I will remove whatever verbiage that needs to be removed.--Canyouhearmenow 21:24, 4 October 2010 (UTC)

Requesting help - Spamming related to Bent Flyvbjerg

Main articles
Editors
Links

Looks like sockpuppetry, spamming, promotion, and WP:COI violations on a large scale. Currently 86 links to flyvbjerg.plan.aau.dk. This has been going on since at least July 2006, and the most recent edit is a few days ago.

I've only started looking into this, and I expect there's much more judging by the number of links. --Ronz (talk) 17:24, 29 September 2010 (UTC)

Looks messy. Note, the domain has also been used by regulars. Reports are forthcoming (including for the users). Consider using XLinkBot if you think it can help. --Dirk Beetstra T C 17:36, 29 September 2010 (UTC)
Messy indeed. I'm notifying each of the editors listed above of this discussion as I add them. I'm guessing these are students and/or researchers. I'm finding it hard to believe that there's no sockpuppetry/meatpuppetry going on. I haven't noticed any of these editors participating in any discussions, but I'm still focusing on finding the extent of the problem rather than on how each account is being used. --Ronz (talk) 00:42, 30 September 2010 (UTC)
I can see why this seems challenging, as the edits don't all seem to line up, and the method and nature of the edits are all different. But it looks like the intention of at least many of the editors is to bring additional attention to the article Megaproject, Megaproject and risk), and Bent Flyvbjerg. In a sense, I don't see them "spamming" in a traditional sense, but it's more like (taking a quick overview of a variety of their contribution histories), that they're doing "in-wiki spamming," if that even makes sense. Now, of course, it's both possible and likely that the real goal is to drive readers out to Flyvbjerg's site, to his book, or to his company, but the method of doing so is quite subtle. I came to this because User: Ronz noted that I had commented on User:Tuduser's blanket addition of Megaproject as a See Also wikilink. I believe that those links are definitely improper, because they both violate the spirit of what See Also is for, as well as are being added without any reliable reason to believe that the projects in question meet an independent reliable definition of Megaproject. As with Ronz, now that I look at these contributions, I also find it hard to believe that there is no coordination between these various accounts, although the long history (some haven't edited for several years) makes it hard to determine precisely. This Wikiproject, and this specific problem, are new to me, so let me do some more research on both. Qwyrxian (talk) 01:19, 30 September 2010 (UTC)
This is a form of refspamming and self-promotion. More subtle than normal spamming, but still similar. Nothing really new, Qwyrxian, but the type of work that stays a bit hidden until someone stumbles over it, or they make mistakes.
I would suggest an SPI being filed, blocking all socks from that and maybe the IPs behind it if possible. Also clean the things which are not proper: excessive linking in further reading like lists, check references if they really properly attribute what they are supposed to attribute (you see sometimes that trivialities are referenced, because the article also talks about the subject; like a ref on the sentence 'grass is green' on Grass, where the article is actually about a strange unique type of green grass, that grows only in some strange lakes in the north of the Netherlands - the reference is correct, but excessive, form of overreferencing, I believe). When then new editors come up, lets try to communicate with them, try to push them to interact and discuss before proceeding; they still are specialists in the field, and they might be able to help us further (but how they are doing that at the moment, does not seem to be the right way ...). --Dirk Beetstra T C 07:40, 30 September 2010 (UTC)
So far, I can't find any ip addresses that are a part of this. --Ronz (talk) 20:00, 30 September 2010 (UTC)
From what I can see, this appears to be coordinated editing being made in good faith by editors that have no familiarity with Wikipedia policies and guidelines. Their only interaction with other editors has been when they've tried to address copyright problems. They're definitely adding information for promotional purposes. --Ronz (talk) 15:18, 2 October 2010 (UTC)
I'd like to get some expert opinion on the external links. There are 86 links currently, 76 in articles. Those 76 links go to 16 webpages. Three of those webpages are linked 10 or more times. --Ronz (talk) 16:52, 4 October 2010 (UTC)
SPI report here. --Ronz (talk) 20:01, 6 October 2010 (UTC)
New editor. Looks like an account created to get around the blocks from the SPI.
That makes 87 links, adding the one addition this account made which looks fine from a quick glance. --Ronz (talk) 16:37, 8 October 2010 (UTC)

Teijin (and other chemical companies)

I'm not sure if this is the right place to do this. If not, can someone please move it to an appropriate location?

It appears that the Teijin corporation is engaging in astroturfing and creating advertisement pages for each of their products. I've already marked some of the pages with advert tags, and one particularly egregious with db-spam. The pages vary in the degree to which they are written like advertisements, ranging from, e.g., Teijinconex to, especially, Sulfron (which I've marked with a db-spam template), which appears to be pure spam and has many edits from 62.132.206.2 (talk • contribs • deleted contribs • blacklist hits • AbuseLog • what links to user page • COIBot • Spamcheck • count • block log • x-wiki • Edit filter search • WHOIS • RDNS • tracert • robtex.com • StopForumSpam • Google • AboutUs • Project HoneyPot), an IP in the company's netblock. That IP also has at least one edit on Technora, which at least doesn't seem to be quite as bad as the rest.

Additionally, while I was browsing around polymer pages, I came across another spammy site, Innegra S, which doesn't appear to be associated with Teijin, but does appear to be mainly edited by one user, HerbNeelyII (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · blacklist hits · AbuseLog · what links to user page · count · COIBot · Spamcheck · user page logs · x-wiki · status · Edit filter search · Google · StopForumSpam). He created the article, and is entire edit history (with one exception) consists of editing that article and adding links to it from other articles.

Westword.com

This was reported to AIV. First user has been blocked. 586+ articles still link to the site, mostly to the blog space, and this blocked user only contributed 50 or so so there must be others. Seems like a massive spam situation to me, but wanted to post here for opinions before I blacklist the site.

I should also highlight that the user above has a twitter page indicating they are affiliated with the company.  7  06:01, 15 October 2010 (UTC)

Nothing useful from COIBot, sorry. I suggest you take a random sample of (say) 10 links and use Wikiblame to find out who added them and take it from there. MER-C 07:44, 15 October 2010 (UTC)
Thanks for checking. As part of the broader picture, can you tell me if you agree that these 580+ links to this site look spammy... To me almost all are pure ELNO, and a few look like refspam. Also, any benefit to checking an adsense publisher number to see if there are other sites?  7  07:57, 15 October 2010 (UTC)
There's no adsense on that page. There is a Google Analytics UA-395255 and we have an article on this site: Westword. This leads to a list of related domains at [68], which I won't reproduce here.
Since these sites belong to a notable publisher, I can't really tell whether they were spammed without usage data. I can imagine that a significant portion were added in good faith (e.g. [69]). I don't think you'll be able to get these on the blacklist with only one spammer. MER-C 08:20, 15 October 2010 (UTC)
Understood - thanks.  7  08:31, 15 October 2010 (UTC)
