ad agency SEO type spam

Listing this here after noticing an increase of this type of spam - these ones all definitely related. -- zzuuzz (talk) 19:58, 31 October 2015 (UTC)

Do you have any examples for other domains? I vaguely remember something like this, and if you can find other accounts it is definitely worth asking for a checkuser. MER-C 15:52, 1 November 2015 (UTC)

This is another I'm tracking at this time. See User talk:Denheforal. I'm sure I've seen some more which seem to be part of a pattern of "filling in links", so I figure it's worth starting to document them. -- zzuuzz (talk) 18:05, 1 November 2015 (UTC)

I'm really concerned about the use of deceptive edit summaries -- if they get away with it, there's going to be lots more accounts (if there aren't already). MER-C 20:52, 1 November 2015 (UTC)

The spam blacklist can't prevent the addition of non-hyperlinked text. We could set up an abuse filter if warranted. At this point, though, they are wasting their time because a link is necessary for the SEO juice. MER-C 17:31, 6 November 2015 (UTC)

I'm a bit concerned about the draft articles involved, and the diversity of the spam generally. I'll wager there's more to be found. -- zzuuzz (talk) 16:59, 7 November 2015 (UTC)

Update
  • "Miniwant.com" (see User:Blastofreading's userpage) continues to be added as a non-hyperlinked text [3] [4] [5].
  • "lanierpropertygroup.com" also included in the same batch of edits [6] [7].
  • There's also a youtube video of a lainerpropertygroup promo video.

Maybe we could consider restricting the use of the tool? @Zhaofeng Li:. -KH-1 (talk) 00:43, 29 November 2015 (UTC)
@KH-1: Well, I don't think this will help. Editors always have the ability to modify the proposed changes generated by the program (since the changes may be imperfect), and spammers will still be able to spoof the edit summary of the tool even when barred from it. The root of the problem is not the tool, and restricting access to it will not stop "the bad guys", but become an inconvenience for well-behaved editors. Zhaofeng Li [talkcontribs] 07:28, 29 November 2015 (UTC)
By the way, the above comment (see diff) was certainly not made with WPCleaner or Huggle. Zhaofeng Li [talkcontribs] 07:33, 29 November 2015 (UTC)

Apart from appearing on the English Wikipedia, there are also some links to that domain that can be found in pages that are not even about the domain across non-english Wikipedias as seen here. The website is also a collaboratively edited site by anyone which doesn't hold much water as far as credibility and reliability goes. With view of this, I suppose the main aim of the person inserting the links is to gain some visibility on Wikipedia which contravenes the mission and a black listing at least would keep them away Kansiime (talk) 01:58, 16 December 2015 (UTC)

User "Ontario Teacher BFA BEd" is busy adding the same content to various article about electoral systems as well as spamming other users talk pages who reverted his "contributions". It doesn't seem possible to reason him at a peer level, so I guess this is a job for an administrator. He was already blocked for a similar motive on one of the same articles. --Minorities observer (talk) 13:55, 19 December 2015 (UTC)

Hello Minorities observer,
You have reverted sourced content, but have not provided a reason why. I posted on your talk page a reasoned and sourced argument explaining why I disagreed with your reversion. You could have chosen to respond, and have a respectful discussion. Instead you chose to file a complaint before even trying to discuss the issue. Please read through the sources, and provide an explanation for your reversion.
FYI, I am female, and I do not appreciate the sexist assumption that all editors are male. In the future, avoid referring to editors by male pronouns (him/he/his).Ontario Teacher BFA BEd (talk) 14:17, 19 December 2015 (UTC)
The explanation that you seek has been given in numerous edit summaries, as well as in this message. You have yet to acknowledge the simple point that your table does not belong as the first body section of every single article on voting systems, just as the first section of soccer is not a classification of the different types of sports. Moreover, you have not acknowledged that these articles all contain an infobox, with which your table is redundant. To the extent that the information you're adding is actually appropriate, it should be added (with discussion and consensus) as modifications to the infobox. In the interim, I request that you remove your table from the numerous places to which you have added it. --JBL (talk) 14:57, 19 December 2015 (UTC)
Hello User:Joel B. Lewis,
Now we are getting somewhere. You believe that the location of the table is the issue, while the content of the table is correct. I have modified the infobox as you have requested with the aforementioned sourced information. Please withdraw the accusation of 'spamming'.Ontario Teacher BFA BEd (talk) 17:50, 19 December 2015 (UTC)
All the articles spammed by "Ontario Teacher BFA BEd" (whatever BFA BEd means) still bear the stigmata of spam, nothing is changed. Maybe that person should first learn how wikipedia works, then write on a sandbox (most understandable for a teacher), and only afterwards make modifications on articles, not the reverse illogical way. As to taxinomies of electoral systems, political parties etc., there are a lot of them, past and present, and it is highly presumptuous to believe one or another is the last and best one above all others. --Minorities observer (talk) 19:33, 19 December 2015 (UTC)
@Minorities observer:, BEd is well-defined, and BFA has a pretty likely educational-identifier as well. @Ontario Teacher BFA BEd: you might want to set your gender-preference in Special:Preferences so that others will know how you wish to be identified. DMacks (talk) 19:52, 19 December 2015 (UTC)
User talk:DMacks is correct. BFA and BEd are my two degrees. In terms of electoral systems, the taxonomy previously found in the Template talk:Electoral systems infobox had zero sources! I provided several sources- three of them scholarly from universities like Harvard to substantiate my update. User:Minorities observer, if you prefer the former classification system, you need to provide sources which validate it, and post them to the [[talk page. This is part of the Wikipedia:BOLD, revert, discuss cycle. That being said, you have provided me with a better location for the table (the infobox), so at least we are discussion the issue now, so we have begun the BRD process albeit in the wrong location.
Please follow the Wikipedia:Please do not bite the newcomers and Wikipedia:Civility policies by avoiding condescension and hostility. You should have engaged in a professional discussion about why you did not agree with the edit, and provided sources to justify your disagreement, rather than file a complaint without attempting to discuss the issue. This discussion should have taken place on an article talk page, or on your talk page. I had attempted to start a conversation on your talk page, but you deleted it and filed a complaint. This was unnecessary as I was clearly demonstrating a willingness to discuss the issue. Moreover, while DMacks has provided me with information on how to set gender preferences on WP, the assumption that if the gender of an editor is unknown it is acceptable to use male pronouns is a form of Patriarchy. Please avoid referring to editors by male pronouns unless you are certain the editor is male.
I look forward to continuing this discussion on the Template talk:Electoral systems page. Please do not forget to provide sources to corroborate your position. As it stands now, the former classification system was unsourced and did not use contemporary vernacular to describe electoral systems. I have updated it to reflect contemporary language with sources from around the world.Ontario Teacher BFA BEd (talk) 14:46, 20 December 2015 (UTC)
Not sure having the same content as the first thing people see on many many many pages will help. Should just make one article with the info that can be linked from the other articles. Content spamming is a problem when its the same info all over and is seen before any real content. Can you explain how the chart would help readersunderstand the article Instant-runoff voting? Is the chart ..the first thing people see.. help explain Instant-runoff voting? -- Moxy (talk) 18:10, 20 December 2015 (UTC)
Two days ago I filed a complaint here against "Ontario Teacher BFA BEd" mainly for spamming and vandalizing a dozen articles by adding the same content to various article about electoral systems, e.g. Open list. These articles still bear the marks of vandalism and its author has obviously no intention whatsoever to repair the damage and remove the pointless texts. As JBL wrote two days ago, I request that "Ontario Teacher BFA BEd" removes the spam-table from the numerous places to which "Ontario Teacher BFA BEd" added it. I am not here to discuss topics as the classification systems or patriarchy as they are irrelevant to the object of my complaint. --Minorities observer (talk) 21:58, 21 December 2015 (UTC)
I have gone ahead and removed the spamming of the same thing all over...Voting system still has the chart for all to see. --Moxy (talk) 18:57, 22 December 2015 (UTC)

  • "Reverting to enforce certain overriding policies is not considered edit warring.", or am I missing something? Paradoctor (talk) 19:53, 22 December 2015 (UTC)
Nevermind, I just realized I stepped into the WP:RIGHTVERSION trap. Paradoctor (talk) 20:01, 22 December 2015 (UTC)
In this case the editor only spammed a link one time. The rest was just edit-warring over the company name. In such cases I be sure to notify the editor multiple times on their talk page - I would probably have left an {{uw-s1}} initially, then an {{uw-adv2}} later. Because of the lack of repeated spamming, I'd probably not make a report at WP:AIV, but just start a discussion on the talk page and wait a day to see if there's any response other than edit-warring.
I prefer using WP:RFPP to stop such situations if they continue, rather than getting caught up in edit-warring. If it's not something that fits WP:AIV criteria, I try to minimize any reverting. WP:1RR is usually impossible to follow in such situations, but there's rarely a need to go beyond two if it's not vandalism or link spamming. --Ronz (talk) 23:41, 22 December 2015 (UTC)
"be sure to notify": Missed the bit where I said "I escalated spam warnings ... at the user's talk"? ;)
Thanks for the pointers. Considering that I do not seem to have a knack for this kind of stuff, it's probably better if I let the folks at ANI sort out these matters in the future. Happy editing, Paradoctor (talk) 00:50, 23 December 2015 (UTC)

Hey all, found this Indian IP spamming it to two articles [8][9] as the "official profile" for these actors. While looking for more links, I found this SPI on Decentnil, who appears to have been tied to some earpixels.com spam. Looks like some IPs he used are from India. Also found additions from 117.207.158.250, 117.212.55.154, 59.96.142.157, 117.199.105.30 and a couple of others. While I haven't organized them by date, it looks like over the last week or so, he's been adding about one per day, then hopping to another IP the next day. Definitely seems coordinated and warnings/blocks aren't likely to stop the spam. I'm removing the links. Thanks. Cyphoidbomb (talk) 18:18, 25 December 2015 (UTC)

Directly related to the earpixels spam, an IP editor from India attempted to spam ouo.io at one of the articles reported above using the same formatting style (adding the link as an "official profile" to the infobox). This appears to be a link shortener, and while I can't see the destination page (I use TOR for link checks and my javascript is turned off) it seems to be the same MO, and we shouldn't be using these sketchy link shorteners anyway.
