Known for her dynamic and spirited personality, Alicia has lived a life filled with memorable experiences, from her childhood in George, South Africa, to her current life in England.

Early Life

Alicia was born on April 28, 1983, in George, South Africa, to Edward and Alta Sterley. The youngest of her siblings and her parents’ “favourite daughter,” Alicia was a lively and adventurous child. At the age of six, she defied gender norms by joining a boys’ rugby team, where she quickly stood out as the best player.

Her childhood was marked by memorable and sometimes dramatic moments. Alicia was known as a tomboy, often getting into trouble, such as the time she got her leg stuck in a bicycle wheel and cracked her skull. She also faced significant challenges, including witnessing her father being taken hostage during a racially charged conflict and narrowly escaping drowning, an incident where her brother saved her life.

Despite her mischievous nature, Alicia was full of life and had a close relationship with her family, even if her brother teased her by making her believe her teeth were made of milk.

Teen Years

During her teenage years, Alicia underwent a remarkable transformation from a tomboy to one of the most beautiful girls in her school, catching the attention of many. Her leadership skills were recognized when she became the Junior Mayor of George, a role that highlighted her popularity and ability to connect with others. She was known for her warm personality, wide circle of friends, and vibrant social life.

University Years

Alicia attended Stellenbosch University, she later studied in London as where she pursued a BSc (Hons) in Business Management. Her time at university further cemented her reputation as a popular and charismatic individual. She was an active member of the Student Union, where she organized social events such as train trips that became legendary for their lively atmosphere. Her years at Stellenbosch were marked by deep friendships and personal growth.

Life After University

After graduating, Alicia embarked on an adventure abroad. She first moved to New York for a year before settling in the Cotswolds, England, where she worked in hospitality. Feeling a deeper purpose calling her, she moved to London, joined a church, and made the life-changing decision to dedicate her life to Jesus Christ. It was here that she met her “very handsome” husband, Jakobus van der Merwe.

Married Life

Alicia and Jakobus were married in a beautiful ceremony in Herold's Bay, South Africa. The couple eventually settled in Kent, England, where they raised four children: Levi-James (10), Boaz (8), and twins Frankie Noel and Tru Lief (5). Their home is a lively and loving environment, bustling with the energy of two dogs, a cat, and two fish.

As a mother, Alicia is cherished by her children, who describe her as “super cool” and “amazing” for her ability to juggle motherhood, teaching, and making delicious meals like pappies. Her children, much like their mother, are adventurous and often get into mischief, whether playing with dangerous creatures or breaking bones.

Alicia currently works as a Teaching Assistant at Perry Hall, where her students adore her for her warmth and dedication.

Alicia is widely loved for her spirited personality, strong faith, and dedication to her family and community. From her early days as a rugby-playing tomboy to her role as a junior mayor, university leader, and now a devoted wife and mother, Alicia’s life reflects a deep commitment to living fully and making a positive impact on those around her.
