There is about a year before Katrina's 20 year anniversary, and there is a lot that would have to be done to improve this back to featured article status. Part of that includes figuring out all of the various sub-articles, some of which are going to need to be updated for the sake of the main article. I'm thinking specifically about longterm aftermath and rebuilding of New Orleans/Gulf Coast, the political impacts, criticism of government response. These are some pretty tricky topics that will impact the main article. I also want to point out that, because there's a sub-article for Katrina's effects in New Orleans, but not Louisiana specifically, that the state-by-state impacts will be in Hurricane Katrina effects by region. There's a possibility that article will end up containing some of the info in the US outside of the Gulf Coast states that have sub-articles, but I'm guessing those impacts aren't that much. There's already a tornado outbreak article, which leaves the other forms of Katrina's impacts across Georgia, Tennessee, Arkansas, into the northeastern United States and Canada. Those areas aren't the most significant in the grand scheme of things, but if Katrina is going to be featured, then all of the aspects of it need to be addressed.
This will probably require a large collaboration, so I just wanted to start the discussion now, in case there are enough interested editors out there who want to see Katrina back as a featured article for its 20 year anniversary. ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 16:43, 10 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
After browsing through the Katrina template, this article has numerous inappropriate subarticles. Merging them would definitely help the more important articles and increase their comprehensiveness, which can be improved upon and make expanding much easier. Are you willing to help, @Hurricanehink? ZZZ'S17:03, 22 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Perfect! Why don't you propose a few merges here and there then maybe we can get back to working on getting the 2005 Atlantic hurricane season to a good/featured topic? ZZZ'S20:55, 22 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I'm still working on Dennis, because I want to be able to take that to FAC sooner than later (ideally once Cindy is done), which is why I'm adding research articles today. But yes, I can do that once I'm done with Dennis. ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 21:53, 22 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I don't believe "southeastern" is a proper noun. It's not like "South Carolina" or "West Virginia". I opted for the name because we could decide to exclude Louisiana, because that already essentially has its own article with the New Orleans article. As for getting it to GA/FA, I believe that will be easier when it's a few articles covering a big topic, rather than just the three separate ones. This would also be the place to cover info for Georgia, Tennessee, Carolinas, even Kentucky. I mention that because the Hurricane Katrina effects by region (see below for proposed merger) has some decent impacts for Kentucky/Tennessee. ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 18:37, 12 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
You're right, it does capitalize, so I changed it. And yea, that's why I think the proposed article is warranted. That way there'll be an article for the effects near New Orleans (and Louisiana by extension), and then a separate article for the rest of the US. I want to note that I proposed moving the New Orleans sub-article to Effects of Hurricane Katrina in Louisiana, but that was rejected because the current article doesn't cover the rest of Louisiana. So that's why I don't think the proposed article should include Louisiana. ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 18:58, 12 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I don't want the New Orleans article to be moved to Louisiana. I think there should be a section for Louisiana impacts, with a summarised version of New Orleans as a subsection. Here's a visual example:
Done. It might be a bit long, but I think you can merge some of the subsections and maybe move some text to the appropriate place. ZZZ'S19:29, 12 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Honestly that's a great place to start. I'm seeing a similar issue with Dennis. There's a lot of broken links, and some of it needs rewriting for a broader perspective and better narrative flow. ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 19:35, 12 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
While you reword Hurricane Dennis, I'll try to do some copyediting on Hurricane Katrina. Before I go back to work, I think we should nominate it for GA first, which shows that we're going a step in the right direction. Also, it's easier and less time-consuming. ZZZ'S20:01, 12 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I'll condense the Louisiana section by making each parish one paragraph, add some sources, then possibly try to expand Alabama since it was also severely affected by Katrina, but not as much as Louisiana and Mississippi. ZZZ'S21:46, 31 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Awesome. I don't think I'm ready to start tackling Katrina yet. I'll wanna save some editing attention for Dennis, figuring that might need some more love before FAC, and I'm thinking Stan is going to be more annoying since it's in a foreign language. But the ball is moving. ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 21:48, 31 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
About as in limbo as other various ADHD-related unfinished tasks are. I would want a new newsletter to better capture what's happened in the last few years, add the new members. Here is the newsletter in its unfinished but nearly-ready state. ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 22:02, 31 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Alright. Let me know when someone begins the Dennis review. I'll go back to working on the Katrina article once I return to my house where I can use my computer. For now, I'll do some minor copy editing here and there. ZZZ'S22:15, 31 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
