Young whippersnappers

[edit]

The text

Some younger funk and hip hop oriented brass bands often dispense with the dirges and hymns all together, or perform only one (usually "Just a Closer Walk With Thee," the only such traditional tune still in the repertoire of some such bands).

isn't very specific. It might be said that "The jazz funeral has gradually become less focused on traditional dirges and hymns in favor of more modern up-tempo pieces," but even that should have a citation. Either way, the second half about "the only such traditional tune in the repertoire" is unprovable, so I'm re-removing it. Cmprince 03:41, 7 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Vietnam

[edit]

New Orleans isn't the only place where they play jazz funeral music they also play it in Vietnam at funerals usually at 5am in the morning or randomly. The music is very badly played with all musical instruments off key and out of time to each other a cacophony of sounds. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Kiwikurt73 (talkcontribs) 17:15, 24 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

what are some other "alternative" funeral services (at least in the Western world)? --74.178.228.88 (talk) 20:47, 8 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

"New Orleans Function"

[edit]

How is this term related? Couldn't find much on wikipedia. Listen to what Louis Armstrong says on this youtube bit and see also The Majesty of the Blues. --BjKa (talk) 18:47, 24 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Latrobe Journals

[edit]

The item in the literature list says that there is a jazz funeral described by Latrobe in the 1820ies. This is utter nonsense. Latrobe does not describe anything like this (jazz was "invented" much later"). Latrobe in fact describes the Congo Square ritual and several funerals, without any mention of jazz or similar music. 2A02:1210:3ECB:2600:170:DA6A:157F:95F6 (talk) 16:29, 3 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
