Sources of old crimes

[edit]

The list is incomplete as there are many major crimes (mostly murders) not being included here. It is exhausting to update this alone. For anyone interested to add old crimes committed, here are some possible sources:

Condensing cases in 2010s and adding more cases in the past decades

[edit]

Although it's informative to provide more cases of crimes in recent years, it's a little too overwhelming for readers to the extent that each year becomes wordy with too many cases which are somewhat the same (Like those in 2016). Hence it gives readers the impression that it is redundant to point out another case which bears great similarities and isn't unique or significant to the Singapore context. That's why this page is listed as 'major crimes in Singapore'. It also gives a false impression to readers that more crimes were committed in recent times than in previous years.

Some cases in 2010s will need to be discarded unless it bears significance and great public discussions. (Example: More than one person murdered, unique kind of murder like the recent discovery of a toddler in a cooking pot, crimes unheard of in recent years such as gun-related crimes and kidnapping.) Molest cases can be considered if there's enough room to add them in, especially for the year of 2019. Narcotics, loansharking and rioting cases can also be considered if it bears enough significance. Overall for the 2010s section, try to keep the number of cases to no more than five for each year.

Finally, try to add more cases that occurred in the 70s,80s and 90s. You now got access to Toggle shows like True Files, Crimewatch and the availability of newspaper and online archives. Make full use of them to contribute to this page.

Could it be better to keep only criminal cases that made the headlines with only important information about them? In addition, I doubt that we can keep the number of cases to just five cause many could be significant enough to stay. As for your comment that there are few cases from the 70s, 80s, 90s, it's just that people don't remember much of them after so long. We probably need to determine which cases are the biggest ones, which will take time. Even then, I still support your move. Will try to help. Ahhh. Okay, let me clarify ah. It's up to you guys if you still want to keep them, but ensure that common and typical murder cases of recent years are summarised in 3 lines on computer screen unless they are of great public interest or unique in nature. As for the cases before 2000s, there is no need to add them to the extent that the numbers must match to that of recent years. As much as possible, ensure that there is at least one for each year, cause lots of juicy cases came out during that period which some of them aren't there yet.

Totally agree. TheGreatSG'rean (talk) 13:36, 14 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@NelsonLee20042020: Robertsky had split the articles into 2 to make it more manageable for reading and editing as well. Will you be interested to take some of the crimes and create an individual article for it. Once the new article has been reviewed, we can have a summary inside this list article and have a link to its own article. There are a few benefits to it :

  • This page will be more manageable for reading and updating.
  • Some major crimes can have a full article and more information to be shown.

If you like to proceed as suggested, I suggest picking those which are featured in Crimewatch as they are more likely to pass through review. --Justanothersgwikieditor (talk) 04:52, 19 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

ok that would be good, but i do't know how to create full articles for some certain cases
eg. the ram tiwary case in 2003. it was not a crime that occurred in singapore but in australia. i add in because i think it would be relevant since it involved singaporeans and made headlines in singapore
maybe it can be made into a separate article since it is a foreign crime NelsonLee20042020 (talk) 05:11, 19 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@NelsonLee20042020: You can look at the links provided on your talkpage or look at this guide. You can use the Article Wizard also. For a reference, you can look at Murder of Huang Na too. For Ram Tiwary, it does not really suit here so maybe you can attempt to write an article for it and remove from here eventually. --Justanothersgwikieditor (talk) 06:13, 19 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@NelsonLee20042020: Nice! If you are hesitant on whether your first article will be up to par or not, no worries! You can try out creating an article in your user space first, i.e. User:NelsonLee20042020/First attempt at creating article, or in the draft space Draft:Some random murdur article here. You don't have to worry about leaving stuff those spaces half done while you take a break from composing the article. You have chalked up more then 50% authorship before the split on this page, so stuff like citation and basic formatting, I don't think you need to worry about. For content layout, as what Justanothersgwikieditor suggested, you can take reference from other existing articles. When you think you are done, ping JASWE or me, and either of us can take a look at your work. – robertsky (talk) 06:34, 19 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

is there anything i need to rectify in the article? NelsonLee20042020 (talk) 11:35, 19 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@NelsonLee20042020: Did some edits. Try to include details such as the investigation findings. Also, try not to cite primary sources. The memoir is a primary source. I managed to find a secondary source to back the statement out. I am uncertain about the article title. Conventionally, it should be "Murders of Tay XX and Tan YY", not "Trials of ZZ Tiwary". Probably need a second opinion about this. – robertsky (talk) 04:42, 22 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

ok NelsonLee20042020 (talk) 07:32, 22 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

how do you change the title NelsonLee20042020 (talk) 07:34, 22 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

You need to move the page to change the title. I would suggest that the article be named "Sydney double murders" as the case is known by this title. Any thoughts? TheGreatSG'rean (talk) 10:44, 22 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Let's move this conversation to Talk:Trials_of_Ram_Puneet_Tiwary. – robertsky (talk) 16:30, 22 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

this list is about the list of crimes that occurred in singapore throughout the years from 2000 onwards. for this suppliment of the page, the main source of information are the newspapers. there are also other sources like the existing online grounds of decision (god) made by judges for crimes committed since 2000 and the TV shows re-enacting the cases (eg. true files, crimewatch)

however, some of these cases, probably most, their information are only available in newspapers, especially the most recent murder cases like teo ghim heng and gabriel lien goh, and some of these cases are also not being enacted in crimewatch (eg. the kovan double murder) hence there would only be newspapers we all had to put details inside this page. ut is an error to say that it is a newspaper collection and not an encyclopedia NelsonLee20042020 (talk) 00:33, 21 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

ps: some of the grounds of decision for some notable cases are also not available or accessible online NelsonLee20042020 (talk) 00:34, 21 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

it can't be helped since we had such a limited category of sources we need to make reference to or cite to prove our information is genuine — Preceding unsigned comment added by NelsonLee20042020 (talkcontribs) 00:43, 21 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Major crimes or high-profile crimes?

[edit]

I wonder what the actual purpose of this page is now. What constitutes a major crime and how do we know what qualifies for inclusion in this page? Do we list only major crimes, or less serious high-profile crimes as well? --Blissfulclarity (talk) 05:16, 11 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
