This sentence is very misleading and thus liable to misinterpretation: "He was an advocate of ecclesiastical poverty, in which dispute he found himself ranged against Pope John XXII." In fact, Michael, as Minister-General, opposed certain bulls which John XXII promulgated concerning (1) the nature of the absolute poverty of Christ and the Apostles, and (2) John's interpretation of Franciscan (i.e., "evangelical") poverty. I'm not sure what "ecclesiastical poverty" is supposed to mean, but one might interpret this as meaning Michael advocated the disendowment of the Church. --67.70.89.238 22:39, 17 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
