Exploited labourers

[edit]

The following text was recently added: In parts of the countryside, it has been noted that up to 35,000 illegal Sikh immigrants have been working as bonded labour in the countries vegetable picking industry in conditions which have been described as akin to slavery. The source is this news item. The relevant passage is the following: "But an hour's drive south of Rome in the province of Latina live and toil as many as 35,000 farm labourers from Punjab, most exploited, some enslaved, say labour unions and community leaders." There are several discrepancies:

  • The source talks of exploitation, not of bonded labour
  • The addition refers to the immigrants as illegal. That's not in the source, and is in fact contradicted by a passage further down, which implies that most are there on legal visas.
  • The numbers in the source are just for a single province of Italy
  • The numbers in the source are for workers from Punjab, not specifically Sikhs (even if this is restricted to Indian Punjab, Sikhs there make up only slightly more than half of the population, see Punjab, India#Religion).

We can try rewriting that passage so that it better represents the source, but I'm wondering whether we need that sort of information here at all. Why would an article about the practice of Sikhism in Italy need to provide details of the employment conditions of some of its followers? – Uanfala (talk) 12:54, 18 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Seems to be some very weak and pedantic reasoning going on here unfortunately. Societal issues pertaining to the Sikh community would indeed be relevant on an article about Sikhism in Italy. The issue itself has been highlighted both by mainstream media and academic journals. Please be aware that we cannot just stick to positive news about a community but all aspects of the Sikh community in Italy should be covered. Thanks. I've updated the whole article in-depth with relevant sourcing. Jattlife121 (talk) 14:50, 31 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

problem with the opening picture

[edit]

I think the top picture should be changed, so that the first thing people see of Sikhs isn't some guys in headwraps holding guns. maybe a little unintentional racism there. i'd fix it if I had the time, but I'm a bit busy ATM could someone do that for me post haste?
