In 1967 the Hitchiti returned to Vietnam and had an encounter with 3 north vietamese torpedo gun boats slightly north of the DMZ about 12 miles off the coast. I think a bronze star was awarded to the captain but I think more details of the encounter should be revealed. This doesn't fit my recolation of the incident. They circled three times and I would like to know who was in comand? I was on the bridge at the time! 2601:880:8100:25E0:CC0E:E8C6:1917:1C63 (talk) 23:33, 5 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I also was on the bridge at that time. I was the 1j1 phone talker for the XO. I don't know who was in command but I know the captain (George Estock) was unresponsive and the XO (Lannan) said "I have the command. Gunners keep your Guns trained on them but don't fire unless we are fired upon." I have been thinking of talking to my senator about getting any records posible. It was something it appears I will never forget!
