Do you want one Edit tab, or two? It's your choice

[edit]
How to switch between editing environments
Part of the toolbar in the visual editor
Click the to switch to the wikitext editor.
Part of the toolbar in the wikitext editor
Click the pencil icon to switch to the visual editor.

The editing interface will be changed soon. When that happens, editors who currently see two editing tabs – "Edit" and "Edit source" – will start seeing one edit tab instead. The single edit tab has been popular at other Wikipedias. When this is deployed here, you may be offered the opportunity to choose your preferred appearance and behavior the next time you click the Edit button. You will also be able to change your settings in the Editing section of Special:Preferences.

You can choose one or two edit tabs. If you chose one edit tab, then you can switch between the two editing environments by clicking the buttons in the toolbar (shown in the screenshots). See Help:VisualEditor/User guide#Switching between the visual and wikitext editors for more information and screenshots.

There is more information about this interface change at mw:VisualEditor/Single edit tab. If you have questions, suggestions, or problems to report, then please leave a note at Wikipedia:VisualEditor/Feedback.

October 2016

[edit]

Hi, thanks for your edit to Teacher in Space Project. I have reverted the edit because you didn't give any references for Barbara Morgan not being an "Educator Astronaut". NASA have referred to her as an Educator Astronaut (eg. in this press release), but that may not have been her official title, and I would really like to find out more! [edit]

Information icon Hello and welcome to Wikipedia. When you add content to talk pages and Wikipedia pages that have open discussion (but never when editing articles), such as at User talk:Buttheadbutthead, please be sure to sign your posts. There are two ways to do this. Either:

  1. Add four tildes ( ~~~~ ) at the end of your comment; or
  2. With the cursor positioned at the end of your comment, click on the signature button ( or ) located above the edit window.

This will automatically insert a signature with your username or IP address and the time you posted the comment. This information is necessary to allow other editors to easily see who wrote what and when.

I'm sure you know this already, but just a friendly reminder! Cheers! TJH2018talk 03:24, 15 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Your signature

[edit]

Hi, regarding your signature as used in posts like this and this - it goes against WP:CUSTOMSIG in several respects. In decreasing order of seriousness, these are:

  1. some of the coloured text does not have good contrast (see WP:SIGAPP): assuming a white background,
    • colour #10aeeb yields a contrast ratio of only 2.54, well below the 4.5 required for WCAG 2 AA Compliance
    • colour #000000 yields a contrast ratio of 21, which is perfect contrast, well above the 7 required for WCAG 2 AAA Compliance
    • colour #ef0000 yields a contrast ratio of 4.5, which is exactly on the threshold required for WCAG 2 AA Compliance but below the 7 required for WCAG 2 AAA Compliance
    • colour #ff00f7 yields a contrast ratio of 3.18, below the 4.5 required for WCAG 2 AA Compliance
  2. it is far too long - excluding timestamp, it is 325 characters of code, see WP:SIGLEN
  3. it contains the parser function contrary to WP:SIG#NT
  4. it uses a category, contrary to WP:SIG#NoCAT
  5. it uses <font>...</font> tags, which is against WP:SIG#Font tags.

Please try to address these problems, I can help if you like. --Redrose64 🌹 (talk) 15:45, 7 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

The category never was in my signature. It added itself, apparently, but I am fixing it. -A lad insane (Channel 2) 16:07, 7 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I tried to fix it, code now reads -A lad insane (Channel 2) (I can't get it to display in code) but it won't let me enter it into the signature box, it says "invalid signature". Is there a reason for this? -A lad insane (Channel 2) 16:34, 7 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]
To display the code here, try dropping it between <source lang=moin></source> tags, as in
<span style="color:#a80000; background:#ffeeee; text-decoration:inherit">Red</span>rose64 &#x1f339; (talk)
don't ask what moin means, I don't remember myself. --Redrose64 🌹 (talk) 19:57, 7 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, replacement signature reads
<span style="color:#10aeeb; background:#000000">-A la<span style="color:#ffffff">d <span style="color:#ef0000">insane (Channel 2)
but it won't let me enter it in the signature box. I suppose I could substitute it if I can't get it to work. -A lad insane (Channel 2) 23:22, 7 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Problems here include: three opening <span> tags with no balancing </span> to close them; it uses the small template, contrary to WP:SIG#NT. Haven't checked the contrast or length. --Redrose64 🌹 (talk) 09:36, 8 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]
The length is okay, it's 188 characters or similar, but how exactly does using the small font template go against signature rules? -A lad insane (Channel 2) 14:08, 8 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Signature now successfully changed. -A lad insane (Channel 2) 14:37, 8 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I wrote "contrary to WP:SIG#NT", and that says "Transclusions of templates and parser functions in signatures are forbidden". Anyway, if you still want small text, change <span style="color:#ff00f7; background:#000000">(Channel 2)</span> to <small style="color:#ff00f7; background:#000000">(Channel 2)</small> and that will lengthen it slightly, to 241 chars. As for the contrast, it's all now WCAG 2 AA Compliant or better. Thanks. --Redrose64 🌹 (talk) 22:07, 8 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Text size change completed. Thanks for informing me of the violations and helping to correct. -A lad insane (Channel 2) 23:11, 8 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Neutral content

[edit]

How publishing statements by the person represented by a Wiki page is violating Wiki neutrality? SelfCritic (talk) 16:53, 14 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@SelfCritic: Normally, a "controversy" section is okay, but it must be balanced and not an attack page. An article meant to sway the public's opinion by providing a laundry list of negatives, rather than providing balanced facts, is unencyclopedic. Also, "controversy" sections typically are required to be fully sourced. Lastly, your formatting was nonstandard- /big and /u tags should not be used to emphasize negatives in articles. -A lainsane (Channel 2) 17:16, 14 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Your work keeping ANI nice and tidy is appreciated. Please remember though that complaints/cases brought to ANI need to remain open for at least 24 hours (from when they are initially posted) before they are archived. Eventually, of course, all cases are archived but be sure not to do so early. Many times, editors who participate in a noticeboard discussion want to know how it has been resolved. As a rule of thumb, perhaps wait a day between the close of a case and archiving. Thanks again for your help. Liz Read! Talk! 01:04, 16 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Actually I came to say something kind of similar: there is already a bot auto-archiving stale threads on those boards, and it can be unhelpful to manually archive them while the issues are still ongoing. Like Liz, I appreciate your willingness to contribute effort but I think it's best to put it in other areas (backlogs anyone?). Thanks ;). 173.228.123.207 (talk) 21:56, 16 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

You're a 'Featured Host'

[edit]

You may have seen this announcement that all the 'Featured Hosts' - whose names and pictures randomly cycle round in the Teahouse Header - have just been updated.

As you are currently one of the 29 most active editors at WP:TH, your name and an image has now replaced that of an inactive host. But because you haven't yet added yourself to the full list of active hosts, I have simply used the default image of a cup of green tea. It would be great if you would now consider doing two things:

  1. Check or change the 'featured host' image allocated to you. Edit it at Wikipedia:Teahouse/Host/Featured/29, or undo my changes if you don't wish to be listed there.
  2. Create a 'host profile' for yourself, and choose a relevant picture - click the 'Experienced editor?' button in the TH Header to formally sign up to create a separate entry on the full list of all 89 current hosts which new editors can view.

Many thanks, Nick Moyes (talk) 10:24, 13 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

re- corsetry: hi, im working on getting an appropriate citation however as most articles on the internet are deliberately sensationalist and poorly researched its going to take time to find something that addresses the issue concisely, and unfortuantly i cant cite books. i'd be happy to leave the false fact removed without my additions in the interim as a compromise?

Lame

[edit]

This is a very lame post. So while you admit I have a good point, you argue that I "loose" because of minority. What a lousy post. Next time, why not argue with those who are right? Wouldn't that make you feel good? Instead of telling me to shut up? -DePiep (talk) 01:23, 18 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@DePiep: I am not bringing my opinion into this. All I am saying is that we're quite aware of your opinion; however, the majority of people disagree with it, and your position most likely won't get more support. I'm not going to argue for either side. You are, though, straying into dead horse territory. -A lainsane (Channel 2) 01:33, 18 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Your opinion was, that while my opinion is a valid one, I should shut up because of being a "minority". That's not arguing, that's vote counting. And it is your choice to do so: you opinion. It would be stronger if you'd say to the others: "listen, you loud shouting majority: DePiep has a point, so you shut up". -DePiep (talk) 01:40, 18 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@DePiep: You're putting words in my mouth - I never used the words "shut up". And it would really help everyone else if you kept the discussion centralized - ie, on ANI (beneath the hat) or on Drmies's talk page. -A lainsane (Channel 2) 01:47, 18 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Smallbones: I see you've fixed it, and I'm not sure if you wanted the one that was originally on the report, that one is here - the first one was a copypaste error by the looks of it, and the numbers larger than 10 are just because the Signpost list is abbreviated from the original 25. -A lainsane (Channel 2) 20:29, 29 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. I think we'll survive in any case. I need to get to know the ins and outs of this column better, but it looks like my guesses were ok. Thanks again. Smallbones(smalltalk) 20:34, 29 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

If you're not too busy to contribute to the annual report... Claim what you'd like to write about! igordebraga 06:06, 24 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I just went to petscan and the 2019 list had only at least (the script tends to do so they're not counted here) 39 people who died in 2019. That should sum it up. ミラP 01:27, 3 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I tried to do that, it's faster than what I was doing, but how do I go about using that tool? I can't figure out what the hell to do. -- a lainsane (Channel 2) 02:04, 3 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Go to categories, put Category:2019 deaths into the categories box, go to the Templates&links "Linked from" row and put User:West.andrew.g/2019_Popular_pages in the "All of these pages" box. ミラP 05:43, 3 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you! I'll get the sandbox edited and posted now. -- a lainsane (Channel 2) 05:56, 3 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I'd like this expanded to 39, and I'd like to offer my hand in assistance. ミラP 05:02, 5 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I have the rest of the list languishing in my sandbox. I'll order the articles and fill in numbers, but if you'd like to do the rest that's be amazing! I should have the order and numbers up in half an hour or so. -- a lainsane (Channel 2) 05:54, 5 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

A goat for you!

Thanks for the help and info. Appreciate the support as a newb (which is sadly lacking from a lot of experienced users)

Rollback granted

[edit]

Hi A lad insane. After reviewing your request for "rollbacker", I have enabled rollback on your account. Keep in mind these things when going to use rollback:

  • Getting rollback is no more momentous than installing Twinkle.
  • Rollback should be used to revert clear cases of vandalism only, and not good faith edits.
  • Rollback should never be used to edit war.
  • If abused, rollback rights can be revoked.
  • Use common sense.

If you no longer want rollback, contact me and I'll remove it. Also, for some more information on how to use rollback, see Wikipedia:Administrators' guide/Rollback (even though you're not an admin). I'm sure you'll do great with rollback, but feel free to leave me a message on my talk page if you run into troubles or have any questions about appropriate/inappropriate use of rollback. Thank you for helping to reduce vandalism. Happy editing! – Juliancolton | Talk 22:13, 5 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Wow

[edit]

Yeah, WTF is right: Talk:March_15#German_occupation_of_Czechoslovakia_1939. I've closed that nonsense discussion. It appears that someone is WP:NOTHERE. Sorry you got dragged in to it. Toddst1 (talk) 15:59, 9 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Use of Twinkle

[edit]

Hi. You seem to be using Twinkle in odds ways. First, you've said that BLP does not apply only to living people. Second, you write "NPOV" in an edit summary for a twinkle revert - without it being understandable what NPOV has to do with your edit, or how it might support it. --2604:2000:E010:1100:F1D5:1604:1B50:2036 (talk) 08:54, 7 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Didn't even notice...

The responding to my comment at Wikipedia:Requests for adminship/CaptainEek. Could have sworn the discretionary range was lowered to between 60-70%. My bad. Kurtis (talk) 16:37, 12 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Lslch: I can see them, and that definitely looks better! I can help with the minutiae like arcane formatting details when I wake up in the morning - it's pretty late where I am - if you'd like. -- a lad insane (channel two) 09:29, 11 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
You will have to explain to me what that is but I am more than happy to receive some help ! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Lslch (talkcontribs) 09:32, 11 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Lslch: The small details, using the right amount of equals signs in the right places, reference links from the main text to the reference list and whatnot. It's just a bunch of wiki markup, but there's seemingly a squillion rules about when to do what where. I'll work on that in the morning, then! -- a lad insane (channel two) 09:44, 11 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

This is a university project that I will be working on for the next few months, I will continue to add information every week so you're welcome to come have a look at the end of the project ! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Lslch (talkcontribs) 09:52, 11 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

ArbCom 2020 Elections voter message

[edit]
Hello! Voting in the 2020 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 (UTC) on Monday, 7 December 2020. All eligible users are allowed to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2020 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. If you no longer wish to receive these messages, you may add NoACEMM to your user talk page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 02:47, 24 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
